The Pilot VP was my desired grail pen for a long time, and when I finally got it I was like "Oh, the clip is there, but I can write..." And then, a few minutes later "Oh... this is kind of uncomfortable" and an hour later "OH GOODNESS WHY THE CLIP". Of course, I couldn't test the pen for several hours in the store. It ended up as a quick notes pen. Also, after 7 years of owning it, my grip has changed, so it grew back on me and the pen has been inked up and in use ever since.

@@philipdouglas842 Well, my full experience with VPs is the following, if it helps: At first the pen ran dry when writing for long, so a wet, deep, dark and saturaded ink helps. Nowadays it got better, like... WAY WAY better, to the point is the best EF nib I own. The clip has now some weird pits (the shinny rhodium one), but so far I am the only one to encounter that problem that I am aware, I got a matte one and I hope it stands better the pass of time (and now the new one is the dry one and I'm 'training it' again. Sometimes I exchange the nibs).

I believe that in the case of those who don't like the clip, the A1 has a version without it (as you say) . But I've only seen the matte black version without a clip atm. In my case, my problem is the weight, so I prefer the A2, which is much lighter.

I have two Jinhao 10 retractable pens. One with an EF nib and one with an F nib.
I love them both. Red and blue respectively.

Nice presentation. For the moment I'm happy with the majohn A1 (the textured ones), I'll stick with them. I bought 2 Pilot nib units, a stub and a medium, and without surprise it's a world apart. Neither nibs went dry in their Majohn even after I left them more than 2 weeks without writing. Still less expensive than a full Vanishing point.

  • @jorge23483

I still think the Majohn A1 is a slightly better pen to try the waters before buying the pilot VP… Actually I have a Majonh A1, unfortunately I dropped it and the trapdoor mechanism just stop working… the price is good but quality wise the Pilot Vanishing Point is better. However it’s a very exiting time seeing how many companies start releasing more retractable pens, some like endless and Schon Designs.
    Thanks for the video.

I got mine in Fine and the nib has been fantastic. You can put a Pilot cartridge on this pen for better ink capacity.

I have both the moonman a1 and the jinhao 10, I think the a1 is a little better built.

Bizarrely, my pen has a spring inside the barrel which I haven’t seen in any of the unboxing videos. IT doesn’t seem to have any purpose and my pen nib neither retracts properly with or without. Any thoughts?

I just received mine in red, not yet inked but I love the color and the type of laquer they used, it just shines awesomely.
I'm not sure about the weight because i have no scale to test, but to me it feels lighter than the Vanishing Point, A1 and A2. Nevermind, the Vanishing Point is still the best but this one won't hurt that much if something happens to it 😅

  • @dschirpke

I did not know if I would like the clip there, then I got a moonman a1 with the clip, the clip does not bother me. I have another without the clip, not having the clip annoys me.

I bought a couple of them but they dry out all the time. The inside door mechanism does not keep the nib wet. Big pain to try to use.. don’t know if the real vanishing point works better..

Yeah, i wasn't a huge fan of them. It's a nice pen but it's not more useful than a 51 style.. the jinhai 85 and 86 are my favorites, and the discountinued 51a before that. They just always work, no drying out. I can load basically all my inks and use them all at the same time for months and months.

"Not made by craftsmen in Japan" is way off the mark - both these pens are mass industry items - but also very funny. The Japanese are the original copiers of everybody else. After WW2 they rebuilt their nation by copying not least their old comrades-in-arms, the Germans - and good for them! But don't be surprised when others jump on the bandwaggon :-) I have several of these pens - both Jinhao and Majohn - and as for the ink capacity, I pipette fill cartridges and get 3-4 times the ink capacity of the tiny converters. Oh, and both brands are now available with nibs which are a lot smoother than . I agree that this is a note taker, not a letter writer, but that's not a fault, it's what it was made for :-)

I have an EF Marjohn A1 and very tempted to get a F Jinhao 10 (if they are available). As Doug at Inkquiring Minds once said , writing with the EF nib on the A1 is like trying to write with a rusty sowing machine needle. I have to agree. If only they would do a M nib these pens would be fantastic.

Vanishing point users are a special sort of people, I guess. I don't like ik either. I wonder what your thoughts are on the needle point and ballpoint fountain pens they have these days...

very good review, I have all the retractables, Pilot, Majohn, Nahvalur, and the jin hao. The Jin Hao is better than them all with the exception of the Pilot, which is clearly the best. The clip on all them is an issue that takes time to get used to. These pens all take Pilot nibs, as you said great for taking notes at lectures.
