Moonman (later renamed Majohn for the international market due to Kaweco trademarking the name Moonman) was the first Chinese company to release its version of the VP/Capless. The A1 is available with and without clip as an alternative for users who're on a budget and/or feel the clip on the VP gets in the way. It's a metal pen and the parts are interchangeable with Pilot. (Cf. Inkquiring Mind's video on replacing the Moonman nib unit with a Pilot one after his original nib unit leaked the contents of an entire cartridge on his desk.) The A2 corresponds to the Pilot Decimo (the lighter, slimmer version). Its plastic body and faceted design make it easy to recognize. The A3 corresponds to the Capless LS. Originally, the only nib option was EF, but it wrote more like a Japanese MF. It took a while, but there are more nib options available. (Platinum came out with a retractable fountain pen about the same time Moonman did, but I don't like the design; according to reviewers, it's also a PITA to ink.) Jinhao is a new player in this particular corner of the fountain pen market. Some people call this a ripoff, but the design patent expired and is in the public domain. Fountain pens with retractable nibs are really convenient for quickly jotting down notes. And the Chinese models are a good choice for people on a budget or if you're unsure whether they're for you.
The ripoff argument is a valid one, on the other hand that used to be said about the Japanese brands not that long ago. Just a thought. Personally I'm just looking forward to what these new brands will create by themselves in the future.
OMG! Your collection is just multiplying but it's so much fun so have different color pens to play with all your inks. It's just nice to relax and have some fun with pens and inks.
When is the National Handwriting Day? How are you curating your purchases? A pen podcast, Hemingway Jones, featured a brief segment where as a banker in his day job, he (whose wife also is presumably employed) discussed how to go about building a pen collection. Until I saw this video I had no plan, and ended up buying duplicate Jinhao pens. They were very inexpensive, but duplicates nonetheless. Some guidelines he suggested were to make sure each pen purchase is for a reason. So, I am also learning how to be discerning in this regard. I have a group of mini Mahjong, and Jinhao pens that are fun and easy to use. I prefer Asian and now Indian manufactured pens and especially nibs. JoWo on my Asvine V200 Titanium would be an exception -- almost -- but I wasn't up to the extra money that upgrade cost. And, Asvine came through -- the nib is a smooth, writes every time nib. That was a satisfying purchase for me. However, with arthritis and carpel tunnel that pen, though light and beautiful, is available for resale or trade. I don't use it often and I think my best bet is to get on toward the next flex pen phase -- maybe a vintage pen with a great nib or Urushi finish and a great nib.
My husband got his Jinhao, and he’s been using it all week long! He’s enamored with it. He did need to use a wetter ink-Noodlers instead of Pilot-and do some downstrokes too, but he loves it so much now. On the other hand, I got my first Kakuno and it’s AMAZING.
Yay! So happy to hear he’s been loving the Jinhao! Sounds like he found the perfect ink combo. I find Noodlers works well with this type of nib. And of course, I’m beyond thrilled you're enjoying your Kakuno! It’s such a fun pen 🥰
I also just discovered the Kakuno and I LOVE the way it feels. I’m trying so hard not to look at any other pens and to just enjoy the pens I just recently bought for a bit first. 😄
@ The Kakuno is a solid pen. Many redditors in r/fountainpens say they have more expensive pens in their collection, but their Kakuno gets used more. Don't let FOMO drive you to more pen purchases in a rush. I like my Family Edition one.
So many fun new ones! I’m glad you’re enjoying the jinhao and majohns. I’ve been eyeing that brown sparkle jinhao for a while now. It’s so pretty! I’ll bet it would look lovely with Robert Oster’s Caffe Crema. Also - in case you’re interested in another gorgeous Robert Oster brown - check out Toffee! One of my favorites! Also, for a really pretty permanent ink, I love De Atramentis Urban Sienna. It’s a wetter ink, so it’ll make your pens write more broad, but it’s a really pretty warm brown that shows shading.
Hi Michelle and the Fountain Pen Community, I just received my orange Jinhao 10 FNib from Amazon today. I'm so excited! I inked it up with Noodler's Lexington Grey using a syringe, and it wrote immediately. No start-ups needed at all. I am enjoying this combo so far.
I adore Jinhao pens and glad you've enjoying them! At the risk of feeding your burgeoning addiction even more, I suggest you pick up a Jinhap 51A and Jinhao 82 Mini as well when you're next tempted. I think you might like how they feel.
Ok so I had a kakuno and monteverde that I’ve been trying to get to write and I did the downstroke thing and they both work now!!!! I’m so happy Thank you!!!
Yesss, it's such a solid pen! The matte black is such a sleek choice, too. Good choice. So glad it’s already earning its keep in your everyday lineup. Enjoy writing with it!
If you ever want a new look to the Jinhao 82, you can swap the end parts of the pen. On the cap you have to unscrew it and on the barrel you have to pull. But be careful not to loose the golden ring. For example you can put the grey end parts on your brown Jinhao 82. I have 5 Jinhao 82 in different colors and often change the end caps between them.
Enjoy your pens. Be careful sliding down the rabbit hole 😂 Caution: the TWSBI Eco Expresso with Bronze trim is coming. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. But seriously, the jinhaos are addictive. They are so reasonably priced and fun. Perfect for experimenting and learning about fountain pens.
Thank you! 😂 Yes, I saw that... the TWSBI Espresso is dangerously tempting! Ahhh! Just in time to break my wallet for Valentine’s Day☕️ And you're so right about Jinhaos. This hobby really knows how to pull you in! haha!
Fun video, a little advice- use those hard down strokes with caution. There is a risk of springing the tines (permanently separating them) as well as bending them away from the feed. Either of these will stop ink flow and result in skipping. I recommend “flossing” the tines with brass shims instead to make the flow wetter.
i highly recommend robert oster lemon grass - it's a beautiful green, and behaves very nicely with my TWSBI ECO. it shades slightly, it's a green with hints of brown in there. overall a very nice ink, well-behaved, not too wet or dry in my experience.
OMG! I started watching you about a week ago and now I have 4 Jinhao 10 pens on the way 😅😅😅 I have a few other Jinhaos already which I already enjoy so I think I’ll love the 10 - was telling my coworkers just today I need to stop with my pen addiction (I enjoy most all pens but especially fountains) they are so lovely to write with and my best hand-writing ❤
Ahh, welcome to the Jinhao 10 fan club! 😅 Does this make me a "bad influence" then? 🫣 These fountain pens are slippery slope, but honestly, such a fun one. I think you’re going to love them the capless version. You'll have to let me know what you think once they arrive. Enjoy your new Jinhaos!🙌
@ I definitely will let you know….i ordered another (the gold after I saw yours 😅😅😅) so now I’m waiting for 5😂😂😂 slippery slope indeed I’m definitely there👏🏽🙌🤗
I was watching a video on calligraphy (can't find it) but she mentioned new fountain pen nibs have a coating on them to protect them from tarnishing that needs to be washed off. I remember she used a raw potato because the starch will eat away at the coating. What I don't remember is if no alcohol or no glass cleaner? Sorry but since cleaning with a lens wipe before inking my new pens, I no longer have a problem getting them to write nice. Thanks for sharing your experience with fountain pens. I appreciate you!
Awesome vid! I have 5 metal Jinhao fountain pen of varying nibs and just bought their version of Lamy Safari. Perfect pens for new & long time fountain pen users.
I started with the Jinhao 82 in the translucent brown and just ran with it. It's taken nearly a year and I've amassed a small collection of inexpensive but great writing pens for my personal taste. Have fun!
I have a Majohn A2, and I actually enjoy the clip location. Because the nib is so tiny, the clip helps me automatically get the nib in the proper orientation without even looking. I have been wanting to buy a Jinhao 10, but I have been on a pen buying hiatus. This Jinhao 10 gold version with gold trim is so pretty it is testing my resolve! I can buy any pen I want, but I love Jinhao pens and have way to many! The 82 and 100 are my favorite models because they have so many pretty color options. FYI, the 82 finials come off and you can swap with other colors to create many combinations. I have not done one lately, but I think the cap finial unscrews and the barrel finial just pulls off or vice versa.
I love brown inks too. My favorite at the moment is Herbin Lie de The (Tea Brown). Writes really well with all nib sizes. Also, I wanted to let you know in case you don’t that the Majohn empty ink cartridges fit Pilot pens as well. Someone said that somewhere online. I just don’t remember where LOL. I ordered some from AliExpress and they do fit. I have one in one of my Kakunos currently. Haven’t tried it in a Jinhao yet but it will probably work.
I found mine runs out of ink quickly and there is way to see unless you pull it apart I thought mine was giving me trouble was not happy but it was out of ink😮! I put ink in and it is doing wonderful! I have onion skin journal coming and a Tomoe River paper I find watercoloring in it easy, never tried onion paper will see how that goes. I am happy someone reached out to help! Love and light to you!
For long-term storaage of an inked pen.. .Do not discard the small ziplock plastic bag that the pen came in. Place a modest piece of "sponge" material (like what is used for make-up) or a piece of a cotton ball into the end of the bag and dampen it. Then place your inked pen in with it and zip-seal it closed. The air-tight closure with the moist sponge/cotton will maintain a moist atmosphere in the bag and inhibit evaporation of the ink from the pen.
I really like the Jinhao pens too. The 82s are cute and fun to write with, and the 10s are so handy for EDC stuff. Great balance between high enough quality to be pleasant, and cheap enough to not worry about it. And like you've discovered, fountain pens and nice paper tickle our ADHD-girly brains in a way few other things do.
I have the jinhao 82 volcano grey too I love this colour. It reads slightly purple to me… I swapped out the finials to cream ones to give it more of that sailor look 😂 I jumped on Amazon after watching this and bought the matte black jinhao capless it looks so nice x
I just received a vert empire bottle and is an ink that definitely doesn't go well with extra fine nibs. I'm eyeing the Herbin inks because it's easier for me to buy it in Brazil. So far I only found a few Diamines, some Pelikan and Herbin inks. Added the Cacao du Bresil to the list after your video
To be more specific you want to push down just enough to spread the tines a little. A lot of these chinese nibs are very stiff hence the "like writing with a nail" description. But even these stiff nibs have a point of no return. For more normal looking nibs and not these vanishing point/hooded nibs you want to put your finger on the nib around where the split ends where the breather hole is to ensure you don't lift the nib off the feed and bend the nib in the wrong place.
I definitely like matching inks to the pen as well, even though it can be problematic 😅 I also find the economical pens fun to play with at a low investment. Less afraid to play around! I have broken Jinhao 82s before, can crack over time, it’s pretty cheap plastic!
@ yes, I have about 14 and every single one is amazing. I use mostly medium nibs but inks are great in Fine too. ‘Monteverde ink contains a European Ink Treatment Formula (ITF™) which drastically improves ink-flow quality, extends cap-off time, and lubricates and protects the ink feeding systems from corrosion and clogging.” And they’re vegan if that interests you.
Jinhao makes a nice starter fountain pen, the 993, that is perfect for me. Got it for $4, has a converter with it and uses standard short cartridges. Can use it and see if I like fountain pens without spending a lot of money.
my newest favorite inks are from the Colorverse Colorvent calendar they are so cooperative when cleaning out even their shimmer inks arent overwhelming their truely wonderful sad that they are only making bottles out of 3 of the most popular inks from that colorvent calendar but hopefully some of them that I like will make it :)
Great review of the Chinese vanishing points. The only issue I have with the Pilot Vanishing Point (I don't yet own any of the knock offs) is the tiny ink volume. I hesitate to take it on a trip as my only pen because of this. I usually just refill an empty ink cartridge. But it still doesn't come close to my piston fill pens.
for me, pilot ink is always a little bit sticky, DeAtramentis and Monteverde too. despite most diamines being wet, my earl grey was dry as well. i hope you enjoy your A2. they look like plastic but are supposed to be metal, mine is metal, it's orange faceted and black, i call it my Halloween pen! great, helpful video, i hope you are well too !
I have 2 Majohn A1s (not the A2, but similar) and love them. Had to return my first one for a replacement because I couldn’t fix the dry starts, but both work great! After seeing your previous video I decided I wanted to try the Jinhao 10…I’m still waiting for mine in gradient gray. They are getting popular, so even Amazon is taking awhile to get stock in the more popular colors. Jinhao 82s were my first fountain pens. I have several and they all work well. It is fun to collect different colors. I also have a Jinhao 100 that is beautiful and a smooth writer. I doubt I will EVER let myself pay more than $100 or more for a pen - so for me right now my Ellington and Wordsworth & Black pens are “fancy” 😂
Okay last comment - I swear LOL. TWSBI fine/extra fine is more like a medium to me. It's definitely not as fine as other fine/extra fine nibs. Diamine is the best. Also did you see the new Twsbi coming out next month? :D
Another great video. I love how relaxed this is. We fountain 🖋️ nerds like all nerds get lost talking about minute details . Your take was much more casual and more about how you felt about the pens. Not to play enabler 😂 BUT, the 🖋️ community has a love afair with the Jinhao 9019 and the X159 (not just 159 but x...) . Both look by coincidence very much like Mont Blanc pens. They are super different to anything you have but they are super popular and dirt cheap. So maybe just for fun or for the content they might be worth your time.
It’s good you got the shiny black. I got the matte black Jinhao like yours that broke and it shows EVERY little smudge. Every time I pick it up it’s dirty looking.
I love Pilot FPs! for inks my current favorite is Diamine x BlueBlack English Milk Tea and Sailor Ink Studio 373. I also love Jherbin Cacao du Bresil! I'm considering getting just a 10ml bottle of that ink.
I just received my 4 jinhao 10, they all worked well. What I observed is, black ink does not work with them. I used the jet black diamine ink. But when I replaced it with havasu turquoise diamine ink, it wrote very well and nicely. Also, I tried putting the red dragon diamine ink on one of my jinhao 10, it did not wrote as well, had difficulty in flowing, unlike with other blue inks I used with my jinhao 10.
Once again, you’ve caused me to buy pens😂 I’ve tried the Jinhao 82 twice with no success, but I have to try once more before giving up since seeing the ones you bought lol. And even though I love medium and broad nibs, I had to try the Jinhao 10, I love it! Now I have more colors on my cart 😛 I have also recently found some good deals on Conklin pens in broad nibs and they are added to my favorite pens list now. And I know you said you aren’t buying …but for your list… Do you have the ink by Endless Alchemey called Candy Sea? Really fun!
I think it is a wonderful 'rabbit hole'. There are worse addictions (lol). Take a look at the Jinhao 9019 or 9016. You might find the 9019 too large. The 16 is smaller. Both ink converters hold a very large amount of ink. I found the nibs really nice.
I still can’t understand how your last nib broke so easily. That had to be a factory defect. I’m a fp newbie who also just bought my first Jinhao and love it. 🥰
I got the Jinhao 10 Matt black in Fine and it was to much of a medium so I ordered the red and the blue in EF but they both have such a hard time restarting. I figured that since I had put Diamine Firefly and Diamine Shimmering Seas, both shimmering inks that they glitter was drying them out. I washed them out really good, three times and I still have hard starts on both EF. Im getting frustrated. :(
Platinum carbon black is not the easiest ink to deal with. I always have problems with it. Hard starts being the most problematic. Now it’s exclusively in a platinum pen. Which still gives me problems but not as much.
Also Amazon keeps messing up my packages - they lost/damaged my package with the asvine. Then they lost/damaged my Sailor pen. I'm starting to think the Amazon workers are stealing packages. I ended up going with Temu for the Jinhao.
Ahh, I see. Okay, thnks! The material is so light (compared to my Jinhao). But they both feel just as good in the hands. The fishscale one is nice as well!
@@pbnjezly404 I know!! LOL it is my 3rd year doing it this way. I save up from Sep to Sep (coinciding with hobonichi day) and then I buy stationery to last me another year. This allows me to use up all my stationery. And also be mindful when I my purchase window opens. This also helps me keep my stationery collection manageable :) lucky March is just around the corner!!
I am bad, welllll, kinda sorta. 😂 My brother used fountain pens like 30 years ago?! So I tell him about my pens and he was like, which one should I get and I immediately was like, the Pilot Vanishing Point. 😂 😂 😂 Sent him the link and the nib size because I know his handwriting, the ink he should get, everything. He calls me back and said, I thought you were spending on average $20 per pen?!?! That aint $170 for this here Pilot VP (said with a VERY southern accent!!!) I replied, well you work in the oilfield and you are driving executives around you make a lot of money, my on average $20 pen taking care of Mom budget is a lot less than your $170 pen on the high salary oil rig budget!!!! Besides you don’t want the executives to laugh at you?! 😂 😂 He was quiet for a minute and said, that is true, I am getting the VP. 🙂🙃🙂🙃 😂 I mean I can’t even with this guy, we call him Prop Man because when he does anything he has to have all of the stuff to do it. I predict he will have a $500 or more pen before the year is over! I have also acquired from here at home one of those ceramic open mouth frogs used for kitchen sponges?! Mine is circa 1980! 😂 My Mom made a little pillow to fit in his mouth where the angle is barely, barely slight downward. My pens look adorable in it! I also acquired a $5 standing Sasquatch and Yeti that both work holding a pen. Oh and a Darth Vader from Dollar General! He can hold my pen and his light saber!! 😂 Thanks Michelle for a report back on the pens and ink, it is great info to have! 💕
Thanks to a comment in a previous video, I now have an empty Majohn cartridge filled with ink in my blue pearl Jinhao, and it takes so much more ink than the converter in the Jinhao. It seems I really like writing with the capless pens. I've filled the blue Jinhao with Octopus Fluids Sheen "Unicorn" and the sheen is showing! It's never shown in my other pens with broader nibs. I'm so happy! Wheee! 😆❤️👏
@@SeaweedKisses about 20 Jinhao 82, 4 Jinhao 750, a Jinhao 8802, 3 Jinhao X159, 3 Jinhao 919 Dadao, and the latest addition a very pretty Jinhao 10 in a soft powder pink/purple...🙈
Hi Michelle I can't contribute much to this discussion be/c I only have one fountain pen from many years ago that is clogged. I thought you did a presentation on how to internally clean your pens? Is Heart of Darkness or Silent Night darker? Also looking forward to journaling content. Always sending much love and kisses always my sweet friend ❤🌹🦋🖋
I love this video. One of my jinhao’s sucks 🫢😂 but I think it’s the converter. I have to push out the ink to get it going all the time. So annoying. I’m curious how many notebooks you’re in at one time. I always see different ones. I know about your planners but notebooks im curious about. Moleskine, cheaper ones, etc. how many at once?
That is such a frustrating issue with converters! Sorry to hear that. Currently, I use about 3-4 different notebooks. One I use for random scribbles (errands, to do lists, reminders), another I use as a daily planner. There’s also my commonplace journal where I keep quotes and important information I want to remember. Then there are a few art sketchbooks I play around in.

Sorry but since cleaning with a lens wipe before inking my new pens, I no longer have a problem getting them to write nice. Thanks for sharing your experience with fountain pens. I appreciate you!
Majojn A1 - Pilot Capless
Majohn A2 - Pilot Decimo
Majohn A3 - Black and White with different removable clip
Awesome vid! I have 5 metal Jinhao fountain pen of varying nibs and just bought their version of Lamy Safari. Perfect pens for new & long time fountain pen users.
I started with the Jinhao 82 in the translucent brown and just ran with it. It's taken nearly a year and I've amassed a small collection of inexpensive but great writing pens for my personal taste. Have fun!
love love love your videos so much! I love having them on while I journal or while I eat hehe
The jinhao 82 medium has the most wonderfully soft nib. Reminds me of writing with a gold nib.
Be careful on how strongly you make your down strokes. You can ruin(spring) your tines with too much force.
thank you! I'll keep that in mind!
It reads slightly purple to me… I swapped out the finials to cream ones to give it more of that sailor look 😂
I jumped on Amazon after watching this and bought the matte black jinhao capless it looks so nice x
I'm matchy-matchy with my pens and inks too - except for black, silver and white fountain pens. Those are my 'anything goes' pens.
Monteverde inks are pretty juicy, but I also love my Diamine and the most glorious bottles are the Pilot Iroshizuku. They’re juicy too!
Good to know Monteverde inks are juicy! I’ll give their other colors a look then❤
@ yes, I have about 14 and every single one is amazing.
I have about a dozen Jinhao 82s and they are all amazing! I have those two exact colors too! Lol
I'm glad you love them! They're such good value for money.
@ I have so many colors, yet I always want more. I think I need an intervention. 😆
I just bought Coffee Date by Robert Oster it is a beautiful brown too! I never thought I would like a brown but I do!
It’s good you got the shiny black. I got the matte black Jinhao like yours that broke and it shows EVERY little smudge. Every time I pick it up it’s dirty looking.
Yeaaaaah I just pulled a trigger on the Jinhao 10. Thanks
I wasn’t going to buy a jinhao 10 but when I say you holding that gold one I went straight to amazon… good grief.
I love Pilot FPs! for inks my current favorite is Diamine x BlueBlack English Milk Tea and Sailor Ink Studio 373. I also love Jherbin Cacao du Bresil! I'm considering getting just a 10ml bottle of that ink.
I use the Majohn A1 and I love it. It’s a metal body and has some weight to it. I didn’t like the plastic body of the A2 very much.
It's called addiction and no one can help you but yourself. LOL!
Ha! Denial is the first step, right? 😂 But who am I kidding...I think I'm a full-fledged member of the pen addict club now!
the matte one is the moonman A1 that is made out of metal
The faceted Majohn A2 is a copy of a vintage Pilot Capless/ Vanishing Point from the 1980's (?).
Thank you for the info! Loving this capless design!
I learned at 5:35 that my maturity level is very low. Thanks for sharing your reviews of these pens!!!
Retractable balls. 🤭
😂 That makes the 2 of us then..Because I did catch myself at the time and considered clipping that part out. But thought, naaahh! Too funny.
Nice video to help a newbie like me get started with fountain pens! Where do you purchase your inks?
I still can’t understand how your last nib broke so easily. That had to be a factory defect. I’m a fp newbie who also just bought my first Jinhao and love it. 🥰
Right?? I'm starting to think it was a defect as well. Because as HARD as I was pressing on this gold nib, it definitely would've snapped by now😂
Iroful is suppose to be like the Cosmo paper. I like the Iroful paper.
Thank you! Might give this brand a try!
I love my Jinhao and Majohn pens!❤I don't need any more, but another capless may be in my future
I think you’ll enjoy the ease of the capless. So fun to just click and write!
Oh also the jinhao 82 coffee/brown one is my FAVORITE!! It's my workhorse. Also I have the caffe crema twsbi with caffe crema too LOL
Happy National Handwriting Day!
Also Amazon keeps messing up my packages - they lost/damaged my package with the asvine. Then they lost/damaged my Sailor pen. I'm starting to think the Amazon workers are stealing packages. I ended up going with Temu for the Jinhao.
The Majohn (MoonMan) A1 is metal. It is like the Jinhao and the Pilot you own. I love the Majohn fishscale ones.
Ahh, I see. Okay, thnks! The material is so light (compared to my Jinhao). But they both feel just as good in the hands. The fishscale one is nice as well!
Sorry, but I can't help... I have four Jinhao 10s and one Majohn A1, and two more Jinhaos on the way and one of them is a gradient brown. 😉😆❤️🙏🙌
😂 Looks like we’re in the same boat!
Which is better the majohn or jinhao
Oh...the you may also like the Hongdian M2 mini fountain pen :)
my mom would love the design, but she NEVER unclicks her pens and it drives me crazy
Hahaha me too!! I have multiple 9019s and Capless ones now! Watching to see if I missed others 🍿
It's a slippery slope, isn't it? 😂
Buy all the capless fountains pens!!! :)
Must. Stay. Strong.😂
@ me too girl!! I have been holding strong. I have until September to open up the gates of stationery purchases 😅😆😫
@@marihiraya.archivesthat’s so long! Thank goodness I only have until March
Girl, find a local fountain pen group! They will let you try anything!
I wish I liked them. Jinhao were the worst pen purchases I’ve ever made. Actually, I can’t decide which were worse, the Jinhaos or the Hong Dions…
A2 is plastic and A1 is better Majohn and you can buy with F nib😊
I have exactly the same problem I have way too many !
*sigh* put it in the cart...
Wheee! 😆❤️👏
Ooohh I’ve been wondering if I should try a sheening ink!
Yes! I much prefer the cartridge refill vs converter as well! It holds much more ink! Plus, it’s easier to clean
Ooooo i could have made this video....
Same here! 😆❤️👍
😂 Would love to see your collection, so feel free to!
@ I’m so similar in notebook use. Thanks for your reply.
