I just finished it. I feel like this entire book flew over my head like one of the San Lorenzo fighter jets. Not my kinda humor I guess. Glad to see so many people enjoyed it.
Newt Hoenikker is such a wonderfully delineated character, don’t you think? My sister suffers from dwarfism, and I can’t help but feel that Newt’s interior world deeply resonates with her. Newt was so much more than his disability, he was such a keen observer with rare prescience and tender flaws.. such a real palpable person reaching out to you from the inanimate pages! It’s been years since I read the book, but he remained with me.
I think he had a couple good moments with the narrator but to me he felt childish? or like everyone viewed him as less, unfortunately except for the narrator ? He felt to me like he understood himself well but his relations to others he just stayed quiet and didn’t rock the boat 🤷♂️
Cat's Cradle was my loan loan Vonnegut exposure (outside of his appearance in Back to School) and I remember loving it and wishing someone would make this into a movie because certain scenes stuck in my memory since I read it thirty years ago. Your summary of this book brought back so many more memories. The language and terms expressed in the book was another element that gave the novel a charm and unique flavor. Thank you for the review and the fond mental trip back in time.
I loved Slaughterhouse 5 and after this review can't wait to read Cat's Cradle! I loved the way Vonnegut laid down really important and deep stuff in such an enjoyable and interesting way. Wonderful review as ever!
WK Dowden Thank you! Yeah, that seems to be something he's pretty awesome at. Working with a lot of really great issues and putting them together in a sort of unorthodox but brilliant manner. It makes reading his stuff both enjoyable and thought provoking. With both books I've felt like I've walked away with something much more than just a good story.
I have read probably about half of his books so far. If you have read slaughter house V and Cats Cradle, a logical next point for going deeper into his work would be sirens of Titan, and then mother night.
A friend of mine is a very big fan of Vonnegut and she bought me Cat's Cradle for my birthday a few years ago. And I tried, really tried to get into it for a few times, but I couldn't get past 50 pages no matter what. I heard The Sirens of Titan is better, so maybe I'll give him a chance with this one.
WoolfsWhistle I can understand how it'd be a difficult book to get into, especially as an introduction to his writing style. Sirens of Titan is definitely on my list of his books to read as well. I'm looking forward to reading everything he's written so I can give a better perspective on which one's are the best. I hope you find something he's written that works for you!
WoolfsWhistle i read Sirens of Titans and is a very good book, too be honest there some part you can get lost of but once you get it you will enjoy. is a good book and the third book i read by Kurt Vonnegut.
Hah. You are a prime example of what I've heard said of Vonnegut's work: the more you read, the more you want to read. I also started with Slaughterhouse-Five and feel the same, though I have yet to read Cat's Cradle (I read God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and Hocus Pocus.) But I also can't read too much Vonnegut all at once. I think one or two a year is good. XD Glad you enjoyed it and I'll bump this one up the Vonnegut list. :D
tarabyt3 Definitely give this one a shot as your next Vonnegut book to read :P I can see how it'd be too much to try and take in more than a couple of his books during a certain period of time haha. I just want to read it all ASAP.
I don’t know how you do it. Immediately after popping my Vonnegut cherry, I binged for months. I laughed more in those few months than I usually do in a whole year. Guy had the giggle gene
Great review, Chris. This seems to be the Vonnegut work most people read after S5. Many people suggested Cat's Cradle when I inquired what to read next. If I understand correctly, Mother Night has the least amount of science fiction elements out of any of his works. Am I right in that or misinformed?
(Sorry for digging up an old comment) Mother Night is amazing, but God Bless You, Mr Rosewater is just as “grounded” (and happens to be my favorite Vonnegut novel XD). Also Jailbird lacks any sci-fi. All of em are great though, the guy was a comedic genius
I reeeaally want to read Kurt Vonnegut as soon as possible! I dont even know why I havent already? Well oh, I know.. because too many other books... :D But Cat's Cradle sounds reeally good and interesting! I think I will start with this one
I'm about to finish it and am finding myself slowing down as I'm not ready for it to end. This book is soooo funny. In the way that it's serious and interesting and enlightening, so when kurts dry humor appears it rounds him out as an author. Can't wait to read slaughterhouse. That is whenever I let myself read this last page.
Be like a baby the Bible say so I stay like a baby to this very day. Or something like that. Bokonon calypsos still wander into my mind so many years after reading cat's cradle. Was Newt the inspiration for tyrion lannistee?
Ukraine, was a member of the Soviet Union and is essential to the Russian government at the time the book was written. It’s even stated she works for the Russian government. Besides the young man is make a brisk and quick review. Stop virtue signaling.
I read this book a loud..lol. Literally 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 oo the most horrifying hilarious shit ever. I told my therapist..lol. Damn. Which I don't helps my current situation ... Why ..why this book was randomly selected at one of my Goodwill adventures 😂 lol it's so good ❤ I loved how it was written the chapters so cool. I also just got dr jekel mr hyde at the same time both oddly scientist n. Humor horror..
Like timequake, sirens is really not my favorite. But, I gave it the ;old college try again a few months again. I think I "got it" a little more. But, I'm interested in hearing why you like it so much? What am I missing? Player piano is also not my very favorite but I think it resonates me because it seems to come from a similar head space as cat's cradle which is my favorite. I think my top 5 are in defending order: 1. Cat's Cradle 2. Slaughterhouse 5 3. Dead- eyed Dick (even though it's crazy dark) 4. Breakfast of Champions 5. God Bless you, Mr. Rosewater
@@HannahMDixon I’m a year late but I think I prefer SoT over CC (even though I love the latter) because it gives an image of hope. The ending, as odd as it may be, serves the characters what they want. Not to mention it’s where Vonnegut gave us this quote: “A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved”

One of my favorite humans ever to have lived on this planet. god bless Kurt Vonnegut.

The Sirens of Titan! I loved that book!
Titan is so epic. Cat's Cradle is amazing imo but Sirens of Titan is prob one of my fav works of fiction period.

It's the greatest.
you gotta read "Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut and make a review video
Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.
I have read probably about half of his books so far. If you have read slaughter house V and Cats Cradle, a logical next point for going deeper into his work would be sirens of Titan, and then mother night.
Have you read Sirens of Titan? Vonnegut is so far and away my favorite writer the conversation would be who’s my 2nd favorite

I’m not sure if Sirens is the better book, but it is the book where Vonnegut’s writing finally clicked for me.

Great summary. I just finished it myself and loved it and wanted to talk to someone about it and found your video. Well done.
Thank you. I got so taken up with Vonnegut that I read 3 of them one after the other: Slaughterhouse-5, Cat's Cradle and Piano Player
I absolutely HATED this book, but your summary was very good. Thank you! :)
Finished the book but didn’t understand some parts. Your summary help tremendously, thank you :)

Sirens of Titan is a wonderful book.
The dancer is Ukrainian not Russian. This is not the same, when people will start being able to differentiate it
