  • Our family recently visited a professional photo studio near our home in Japan in order to have pictures taken of our daughter in formal kimono. This event was done as part of the shichi-go-san (literally "seven-five-three") ceremony which is performed in Japan for girls aged three and seven and boys aged five. This very old tradition traces its origins back to the days when child mortality rates were high and parents wished to express their thanks to the gods when their boys and girls reached these important ages. During a formal ceremony the children would be dressed in their best outfits and taken around to visit friends and relatives before making a formal appearance at the local Shinto shrine (native religion of Japan).
Our daughter Emily is turning seven this year and she enjoyed greatly this pleasant trip to "Studio Alice" (the name of the photo studio) where, in addition to her formal Shichi-Go-San photos we also took advantage of the opportunity to sit for a family portrait. (KB)
🚶‍♂️"Japan Photo Studio" captures a deeply personal and culturally significant moment for Kurt's family, as they participate in the traditional Shichi-Go-San ceremony by visiting "Studio Alice," a professional photo studio near their home in Japan. This episode provides viewers with an intimate glimpse into a practice that holds great significance in Japanese culture, celebrating the growth and well-being of children.
Shichi-Go-San, meaning "seven-five-three," is a cherished ceremony for girls aged three and seven, and boys aged five. Rooted in Japan's history, this tradition reflects parents' gratitude for their children's health and prosperity, a sentiment that was particularly poignant in times when child mortality rates were high. The ritual involves dressing the children in formal kimono, visiting friends and relatives, and making a pilgrimage to the local Shinto shrine to give thanks and seek blessings.
For Emily's seventh year, this milestone is commemorated with a visit to "Studio Alice," where the family captures the moment through both formal Shichi-Go-San photos and a family portrait. The episode takes viewers behind the scenes of this special day, showcasing the intricate details of the kimono, the meticulous preparation, and the joy that such occasions bring to families.
"Japan Photo Studio" is more than just a documentation of a family photo shoot; it's a celebration of cultural heritage, familial bonds, and the passage of time marked by traditional ceremonies. Through this episode, Kurt shares with viewers the beauty and depth of Japanese customs, and the importance of preserving these traditions for future generations. 📸👘🚶‍♂️

I wish the (okay, most) studios did that here- make sure everyone is looking their best, smiling and all. And I can't believe she stays still so long, such a little model!!
You say 'This event was done...' What was done before cameras came about?

Actually this trip was just our annual summer holiday. However we are indeed celebrating Emily's special 7th year in the shichigosan tradition as you mentioned. The years though are actually 3, 5 and 7 as shichi means 7, go means 5 and san means 3. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Kurt :-)

Hello! Is this for Emily's 5th birthday? I know that in Japanese culture, the 5th, 7th, and 9th birthday's are important.
She looks great in the photos! :)
