WoW!!! I have lived in Eugene, Oregon all of my 54 years and am totally shocked to hear about Alberto Salazar!!!!! He was always heralded as a runner who was a hero. I do not ever remember hearing about Salazar's disgrace? So proud of Steve for speaking up! He is a real man! Steve is a real hero!
Steve Magness shares this issue same issues I have experienced. I am so grateful that he has, and hope he can help others to see when this is happening.
This is the first podcast that made me cry. Steve’s essential goodness as a person comes through and I was so moved by his gut wrenching story. There is a bigger story here about greed and power and corruption that is relevant as we as a society wrestle with the dark forces gathering in our government and abroad. I hope we all can muster the courage that Steve demonstrated. Personally, I was alarmed and dismayed way back when the truth about Nike’s use of sweat shop labor in their quest for riches came out. Since that time I never purchased a Nike branded product. The whole quest to get an athlete under 2 hours in the marathon rubbed me the wrong way- and I didn’t even know about how they were treating women. The win at all costs mentality destroys the joy of athletic endeavor. And we all deserve that joy, whatever our natural ability, limits, resources or ability to train. I’m a recreational runner who started at age 54- after adopting a plant based diet to address multiple health concerns. I remember the anxiety about being good enough and then the shame I felt after showing up for my first half marathon race. Here I was, worried about being good enough, and during the race I encountered a person who clearly was a cancer warrior and another who was blind, running with a guide. There’s more to life than the outer wins. The inner character is far more important. Thank you for this wonderful interview!
What a gut wrenching story. I SO felt his pain & angst when he questioned what was being done. How unsettling. And the manipulation by this individual … just awful.
Steve is one courageous man. It’s interesting to hear his story of manipulation and abuse. I am familiar with these tactics and it all starts out with someone knowing what’s important to you and exploiting that. Steve story is so important for everyone to understand. It doesn’t matter how intelligent you are, how worldly you may be, You can be manipulated. In my opinion it’s inappropriate for the court system to allow the abuser to be in the courtroom when the victim is testifying. There’s so much more to say about this but I’ll leave it at that. Another great episode… And subject matter thank you!
Really crazy to think of the power that Nike has on college campuses and athletes. My wife works for a BIG 10 university in their sports department and Nike has a great degree of control, from what athletes wear to how they perform. Add to that their control in professional sports and the gateway for college athletes to the pros.
Rich is the optimal guy to interview Michael Jordan. I've long tried to think of who would be best to actually dig into his mind properly, and I couldn't think of anyone sufficient, until I realized Rich is that guy.
Sweet amazing man Steve kudos to you for surviving a narcissist and abuse cycle you have achieved more than that soulless freak EVER will you are truly amazing and now even running and gym sewing and working again. Dating men isa wholle other story but one day I hope someone I can trust I meet. I needed 2 years of therapy after abusive narcisist and am now learned I'm back on my feet and feeling human again. Never doubt yourself I know what it's like from one survivor to the next you rock
dude ... Steve the part you talk about the injection and giving into that procedure ... you are human. I believe you when you say how hard it was to still address that part. Thanks for sharing your journey.
I'm not even an athlete, trying to hit the gym more, but this was very interesting and the train your brain to do hard uncomfortable things and be in situations applies to MANY THINGS.
1978: Eugene, Oregon was a great place to see others, Mary Decker, Alberto Salazar and Rudy Chaparral compete and be considered heroes for us, couture athletes.
Haha, how great it is when someone coaches you. When I was about 18 I ran 5km (I think that’s around 3 miles) puked, nobody told me to do anything. I then told myself that running is not for me. 😅
I had a coach with his tribe of talents, I outperformed them all a a newby, but he cracked my back by having people twice my weight judoing with me. He became the national coach. I'm sure can outperform him as a coach too. But it's a silly world. Thank you for this wonderful interview.
Great video, We are all manipulated puppets. Money and power is the need of the hour for a selected few, or u can call the few chosen ones ! The weak ones are forced to open up and shout out to the world like this one. A similar experience myself has gone through by the officers of the Indian Armed forces, and now mystical wonders are still being manipulated. The universe is warning us by slowly Steadily and Surely the death in different ways. Some are lucky to get justice some are unfortunate . Prayers and support for all the weak ones who are unfortunate like me to have the duty of making the world know, you are not alone abused and manipulated but would let people judge you for what people with money and power are able to. Love and peace to all.
aaahhhh thats so interesting, the only times i ran a half- marathon (not a very hard one, here in toronto) were also (outside of yoga and meditation) the times i felt like i saw God, i have never heard anyone describe it that way, but thats honestly how it felt (specifically remember at km 17 i was like omg im either WITH god right now or i am GOD)
We had a former Olympian at our high school coach xcountry but I still never got fast because I only gave 80%. Maybe I almost ran a 6 min mile once lol…
Lots of easy running. Occasionally going hard. Very very rarely go see god. First marathon coming up I'm gonna go see god that race trying to get around 3:20.
One heck of a super talk..love it! A gotta say, momentum is gathering towards a sinking of the pureness in all sports. Its happened in golf-tennis- GP racing, motocross, skiing, gymnastics, sailing,NFL.. even climbing. The raw purity has been raped by the lure of high end sponsors. I can no longer attend any of these events for the purity has been hijacked.
Interesting, but I think many discussions (and this conversation is a good example) assume that smart training is the one who is optimized for results, and I believe many amateurs and professionals alike have in training a goal in itself. Performance, health and pleasure in the processes are not necessarily compatible.
The example of how powerful people exploit people's drives. It's what women have been trying to explain for a long time. Hopefully coming from a man in a non sexually exploitive scenario shows how these power dynamics unfold. It's insidious!
... as a German Biologist - this is about conditioning of PAIN - Reward Patterns - when do you sens even imagined “PAIN” - and need instant BIG Rewards - a chain reaction of Rewards - that becomes an even bigger PAIN - when you imagine , it STOPS: As any sort of “Addiction”. It takes intense Endurance Training to accept prolonged discomfort, PAIN, Thirst, Hunger, hurting body - and still keep going without any Reward in sight. In essence a sort of NAVY SEAL training. As it is almost impossible to talk to any Cigarette Smoker about those chain reactions - it is a Genetic profile to accept this concept of Endurance - and always keep going - no matter how BAD you feel - knowing - it will go away - and you reach a goal you could never imagine to reach... thank GOD - nobody listens...
saw galen and alberto roll through an airport on the diamond league circuit. alberto was holding a styrofoam box, 20cm^3 labeled 'galen'. i almost pissed myself. who wants to guess what was in the box?
You cheated, knowingly. It doesn't matter that you blew the whistle! Matters not what you say now. Why don't you get that??? If you were a clean enough person with high enough morals, you'd never have taken the needles.
I think you are incredibly bright Rich Roll. You are gifted in your interviewing skills and I think you have found your calling.

Please tell the dude my friends tried to buy shrooms off in Eugene in 2010 that he's an asshole. Just took their money and ran
My cousin ran against Salazar's h.s. teams in Greater Boston. Same conference

"confidence needs evidence". just wow. thank you guys!
@18:45 “We don’t have rehash all the details of that.” @50:00 still rehashing the details….! 🤣🤣🤣 Glad you did because I hadn’t heard that story.

That's terrifying. How could any company desire supremacy that badly. That's fucked up
damn this is a good one. RESPECT Steve Magness! balls of steel my friend

Wow! What a brave guy!!! I have never heard his story, before!!!!!!

So interesting. Thanks for these fantastic conversations with all their resources.
"Show up to the TurKey Trot...", felt the love come through Rich. Ya had me by the funny bone!
fascinating discussion on mental toughness 👍🏻

People need to understand just ONE lap in 60 seconds is fast, two is impressive, 4 is god level
What a fantastic talk! So good!
Wow! I have never heard about this story
Great interview! Thank you RR
Incredibly intriguing - great talks as always!
I think the most impressive thing about Steve's story is that he can run outside in Houston.
1978: Eugene, Oregon was a great place to see others, Mary Decker, Alberto Salazar and Rudy Chaparral compete and be considered heroes for us, couture athletes.
Great podcast.
Great stuff! Congrats Rich and Steve! So worthy!!!
Fellow Cougar, here! I so wish I’d been interested in running.
Haha, how great it is when someone coaches you. When I was about 18 I ran 5km (I think that’s around 3 miles) puked, nobody told me to do anything. I then told myself that running is not for me. 😅
Come on Steve 3.59 lets go!!
I hope Steve Magness watches Andrew Huberman episode on trauma. He’s definitely been through the wringer.
Amazing interview from two super nerds!
I had a coach with his tribe of talents, I outperformed them all a a newby, but he cracked my back by having people twice my weight judoing with me. He became the national coach. I'm sure can outperform him as a coach too. But it's a silly world. Thank you for this wonderful interview.
I love Steve - great book/s.
❣️🌍 Thank you very much 🌎❣️
Thanks for sharing
Trust falls are awesome for creating connections. Someone hosting their version of a dinner party, ain't going to cut it for everyone
Pls, Which other podcast did you talk about Nike and their behavior to women in?
The one with Mary Cain. Very powerful episode.

I love that table! It even makes me, as a listener, feel calm.

Brilliant :)
I 100% understand this. My take: I am. (God)

When will the follow up podcast air?

You also need to rest! Doing hard things all the time is exhausting! Having elevated cortisol gets stuff done but isn't healthy long term!

Jurgen Klopp is doing podcasts now?
at first glance i thought this thumbnail read “do hard drugs” lol
"exactly"
4:21, not 23.
Boycott Nike 👍🌎
Way too many adds.
Host looks like Jurgen Klopp
RR is so bae... my fake husband. lol
no he's NOT! He's MY fake husband!!!!
Found this episode to be less enjoyable. Thanks for sharing anyway.
An hour into it and they really haven't hit the point time to move on
Host is corrupt too.
Wow, let’s get huge soy boy and have him talk about toughness.
Ngomongin apa ini teh?
Lol
I couldn’t believe evangelical plant-based food subscription grift half way through this interview. Any qualifications there… Dietitian maybe?
lost credibility at the vegan promotion
Exemptive use? Don't be stupid, any testosterone med note should make you act.
Sorry but I has to move on due to the unclear speech of the host.
