Recently I'm using 18 grams of french dark roast coffee beans and click 6. It changes depends on how much you use coffee beans. Zero is when the handle doesn't fall with gravity. Hold the comandante horizontally and tighten the burrs till the handle does not move anymore. That will be your zero.
I didn't know the Gaggia Classic so can't compare them... I'm very satisfied that I bought Aram. If I had to say, it's SUPER sensitive to what kind of grind quality is used :( It took me a while to find the right grind settings everytime I changed the type of beans. But no electricity required! Compact, good design and easy to carry :)

I have the Aram, prevously have a modded Gaggia Classic with PID. The Aram much much more better! They are not in the same league.
