Would also make a good combo with Buckley’s Cough Syrup

Thank you for this info. I was just about to make some. This may have saved a failed batch.

Love this video so much…thank you for all that you have learnt about pine tar soaping and sharing your knowledge. I made it once - was a bit scary, and stinky (throughout my apartment for at least one month). But I love the medicinal quality of pine tar soap bars. Need to renew my confidence around making it as it has been a year. And I love the addition of adding a super soothing milk to the soap you created. Big chunky bars too I see! 😀I will now try it again, your way…your process. Thanks again from the UK. xx

Thank you so much for watching my video! I'm glad it inspired you to try pine tar soap again. I hope you have better luck than last time. My first batch was a mess with lye not mixing in well enough, but after bringing the whole thing to trace first, and then adding the thinned out pine tar, it went a lot smoother. It also moved so much slower going this way, but I'm not sure if it was because the lye particles were already spoken for, or if it was because I added a lot more water. In either case, any superfat this way will be mostly the pine tar, and that is the point anyway right? Again, thank you so much for your interest, and have fun soaping!! ♥

But after it’s finished and cured how does it smell? Offense like pine tar out of the can or nice like Dr. Squatch?
4:30 how was the buck to clean? Did the tar darken it at all?

@@rossydv Hi there! Sorry, I haven’t used Dr. Squatch, but I assume that mine smells a little more like pine tar unfortunately. I actually don’t mind the smell though, so it depends on the person using it whether this is a good thing or not I guess 😉
Also, I used a very high pine tar amount, so that plays a big part too. You can definitely use less and still have a beautiful, functional pine tar soap. I prefer it a little lower to tell you the truth. I have a similar recipe to this one with half the pine tar. It is still very beneficial, but less strong, and in it I also use a fragrance oil, so it smells quite pleasant.
And the only thing I noticed that was darkened at all was the soap itself. Nothing was harder to clean than usual.
Thank you for reaching out and for your interest!! 😁
      Have a fantastic day!

@@MerulaSoaps what a thoughtful answer. Thank you.
Just started following you on instagram but couldn’t find you on FB.
So short answer; it smells better than straight out of the can?
What % pine tar did you use?
PS. I’m also 🇨🇦 New to soap making. 2 batches in. More fun than I expected.

      Certainly!
If you’d like to find me on Facebook, this is me facebook.com/share/sYooWVgGJQXahLNj/?mibextid=LQQJ4d
I make them at 12% and 6% so far. 12 is pretty strong. Not too much better than out of the can, but a little. 6 is lovely with a little fragrance.
And yes it is! I find it exciting and relaxing at the same time lol. And I always have trouble waiting long enough to cut my bars! I can’t wait to see what they look like inside 😊
Ps if you’re going to make pine tart soap, just make sure you’re getting the creosote free kind.
If you’re in Canada, then you can get it at Peavey Mart, or G&E pharmacy. The ones they carry are both creosote free. I called the manufacturer of each to be certain. 👍🏻😊

The soap looks good. I'm sorry the first batch did not cooperate.

      Thank you!
It did turn out much better the second try. A little soft, but nothing a little time can’t fix. I’ve made another batch since then with my usual water discount and it’s much firmer, and cooperated very nicely. I definitely recommend bringing pine tar soap to trace before adding the pine tar.
Thanks for watching my video! 😊

    Where is the recipe?

    • @MerulaSoaps
      @MerulaSoaps  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there,
      My recipe is
      72 ounces canola oil
      30 ounces coconut oil
      28 ounces beef tallow
      6 ounces Shea butter
      20 ounces pine tar
      45 ounces water
      8 ounces goat milk
      19.4 ounces lye
Keep in mind that this recipe will fill a large slab mold, so if you want a smaller batch that fits into a loaf mold you will have to reduce it.
To calculate your soap volume (oils only), you can use this equation: length x width x height (in inches)x 0.38 and that will give you the weight of oils in ounces you will need for your recipe. From there, you can divide the oils in this recipe into their appropriate percentages, enter them into your preferred soap calculator, add your preferred water percentage, super fat, and that will give you your recipe totals.
      As an example,
      My Candora soap loaf mold is 10.5 x 3 x 2.75 Inches. That x 0.38 equals 32.9 ounces.
If I divide my oils into the percentages and enter them into my soap calculator using a 6% super fat 30% water discount, I get
      15.18 ounces canola oil
      6.27 ounces coconut oil
      6.27 ounces beef tallow
      1.32 ounces Shea butter
      3.95 ounces pine tar
      9.9 ounces of water
      2 ounces goat milk
      4.13 ounces lye
It’s important to note that there’s a lot of water content in the goats milk, so if you don’t use it, you need to adjust your water (the calculated 30%doesn’t count that, so if not using goats milk I might increase your water to 36 or 38%). Also, pine tar needs to be entered into your calculator along with your oils as it reacts with the lye and needs to be included as an oil in the equation.
If your mold is a different size, you can go ahead and use that equation to calculate your own totals, and fit the recipe to your mould size .
Lastly, if you prefer a lower water discount, you can multiply your dimensions by .4 or .42 instead of .38 and you will get a slightly larger batch to fill your mold better.
Good luck, don’t forget to use all your safety equipment, and have fun!😊
P.S. since making that video, my bars have dried nicely, are hard, very long lived, and are lovely to use. I hope that if you make your own batch, you enjoy them as much as I do.
      Thanks for your interest 😊

Yes, good idea. 👍🏻 I’m going to change the app I’m using to edit them. This one doesn’t want to let me use the full screen. Thank you for the suggestion ❤️
