Dude, why not just pluck the flower head itself? It seems you plucked off some good leaves. Those top leaves are the best ones on the plant.

In Kentucky we cut the stalks with the leaves still on the plant. Hang them upside down on a stick in the barn. Harvest September and strip the leaves off in November when they have turned brown.

We use to grow around 30 acres and we topped it when it bloomed just take your pocket knife and cut right below the first small leaves those stalk are small a well grown plant should be head high after topped I still plant about an acre just for us here at home you have a great set up except for the wood mulch if you can find a dairy farm close and get some bad or molded corn silage we speed ours on the fields but tobbacco loves it fresh wood chips have acid and tannins that stunt the growth I do use wood mulch around my potatoe plants never have potato Beatle problems I fertilize my tobacco with manure before I work the ground

Topping spongy stemmed plants does very little to shock it and I bet the same day it got topped the leaves grew tremendously. Woody stemmed plants tend to shock or focus energy on repairing themselves I can see where you are coming from friend :) Cheers eh!

Thanks for the great videos. I was born in MPLS and lived in Renville when young. My parents had a cabin on Green lake. Another friend had a cabin on Big Sandy. My Dad worked for John Deere all around Mn. I Miss the Walleye fishing. Now retired in Mexico and have 2000 foot of river front land and cigarettes are huge money around here. Most can only afford to buy one cigarette at a time. A friend stopped by yesterday and gave me a car load of tobacco plants he cut from a tobacco farm. I stuck them in the ground on my land hoping they might root and grow larger. They have the seed pods on them. I do not know what type of tobacco they are. I could save over 100 dollars a month growing my own and not have the chemicals, and could also sell all that I grow in a day around here. Do you still sell the seeds? Thanks again for the fantastic information.

You would get two or three versions some will be More like Rustica the others more like Virginia Gold and some half and half genetics. That is my guess... Also if one strain is more vigorous than the other it will most likely dominate in genetic disposition. All mix breeds will even out potency they should all be similar that way. Just another guess I breed plants that is the consistency I noticed.

I would recommend using a product called "Sucker Plucker". Spray it down the stalk of each plant when you top the plants to control the growth of suckers. Then you shouldn't have to keep pulling suckers. That's one of my least favorite things to do.

Larry, ... I have decided to start growing my own tobacco this year. I smoke a pipe, and am looking at trying a tobacco that is mild, and has an earthy flavor, and I see that you use Virginia. I was wondering what your opinion was on it compared to a Burley. I'm considering doing a blend but i'm worried about cross pollination. What are your thoughts?

What state are you in.. tobacco likes good hot, dry, humid weather. The soil needs to be rich and dry. Moist ground causes thin leaves.Mine are over 5 foot tall and no flowers yet... I'm in Kentucky....

Try putting them in the ground next year and see what it does. U gotta use fertilizer with a lot of nitrogen... Try 15-10-10 fertilizer....the first number is nitrogen u want a high first number on fertilizer... Utah gets hot but low humidity. They need humidity.. and don't water your tobacco. Makes leafs thin... They like very very very little water, just humidity. Water only wen leafs look like their welting... I've been growing for 10 years. I got 60 plants this year... I gotta home made cigar business in the bluegrass.

You break off the suckers so all the energy goes to the leaves but what about the energy goes into healing where you broke the suckers off from? To me, it sounds contradictory. With other plants you want to keep all the leaves on unless they are prohibiting more leaves from getting sufficient light. The plant does have to mend itself, which takes energy. Please, take no offense, I'm just trying to learn.
