I remember following along germinating seeds wondering if i would get any tobbaco, now thanks to you im sitting here smoking some delicous gold dollar. I know you have passed on but this next smoke is for you Larry ! much love!
Hello Larry, I live in CA. I planted in December and harvested in April. I wanted to thank you for your informative videos. My tobacco is amazing. Of all the 50 sites I researched, yours was by far the best. Thanks again for helping others learn the trade!
Why won't my tobacco hold a flame. I planted Burley in March, had a bunch of blonde leaves on the bottom of a half dozen plants. I snapped those leaves off and hung them up in the garage for 2 months, and when the whole stem was dried and felt like a tooth pick, i peeled the stem out and shredded some. The smoke tastes like it should, but my cigarettes won't hold flame. The cherry just dies out.does it need more time to dry out? I'm about 30 miles south of Houston for your climate questions.
For shredding, I've found the best thing (for me) is a pair of shredding scissors (scissors with 3 or 5 pairs of blades- I use a 5 blade)... it may take a little longer than some other devices but I only do enough for about a week at a time so perfect. It makes lie a course shag cut that's perfect for pipe or cigarettes...
Hi Larry. I followed your advice on every stage from germination all the way through and I’ve had great success. My first few leaves cured with a bit of green in the leaf. Then I changed the place where I hung the leaves and I got nice tan colour uniformly. I’m growing golden Virginia and allowing it to cure naturally without fermenting it. I found that hanging the tobacco where I’ve got a gentle breeze and heat from a tin roof seems to naturally ferment the leaves. Our humidity regularly hovers between 50 to 70% and I’m thinking these conditions are giving me the sweet smell in the leaves over time naturally. Thanks for your video because your explanation is really easy to understand and follow, and everything you’ve posted works 100% for me. The money I’m saving on buying is massive because store bought tobacco is an absolute tax ripoff. Thanks again Larry.
I've been watching your videos and have learned some things I never thought of.....like using rubber bands to bunch them together. Drying shrinks the stems...bunches get loose with string....fall to floor. Rubber bands naturally wants to contract. Great idea. I thought about the curing process using a refrigerator. I like the crock pot idea. I just wish I had room for a refrigerator in my garage. Boat and wood shop machinery takes up all my room.
@@burtlemorales2934 Perhaps you harvested the leaves too early or the temperature was too high (temperatures over 25C or 77 F) during the curing process.
Ive always wanted to try and grow my own tobacco. Even though I'm moving to Germany where it's cheap to buy, there's just something about growing and smoking your own that's rather appealing
these videos are great for future proofing my pipe smoking habit. they want to make the selling of tobacco illegal in the UK over the coming years, so ill need to grow my own. Not to mention its already £18 for a 50g tin. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the tips, I am drying and curing some Aztec tobacco, it is ceremonial stuff and is quite strong. The leaves are thicker yet smaller. I've been growing for several years but I'm trying to get different qualities and flavors by different curing methods. Some I dry in the Sun and some I do not, depending on whether I am making snuff or not... One method I have found for hanging single leaves is to use trimmer line from a weed trimmer. It works fantastically, just cut a point on one end and string it.
I just found you, and so glad I did. Thanks for the great info. I plan to try this next spring. By any chance are the seeds still available? I would love to be able to say I got them from you! Thanks again for the info!!

Hi Larry, how much weight in tobacco would you say you get from an average size plant? I smoke about 2 pounds per month so I would need around 25 pounds of tobacco to suppy me for a year. I'd like to know approx. how many plants I would need to grow. Thanks, Gene
I grew up planting, topping, priming, and curing tobacco in Stokes co. N.C. Said to be the best tobacco grown in the world because of its red clay soil. It's some hard work but I wouldnt change it for the world.
I picked up my method for hanging tobacco from the industry -- for example; spiking it on sticks, in bundles, and then hanging the sticks from the ceiling. As long as it's done right, the leaves won't fall down, and it's much quicker than securing the leaves with rubber bands, twist ties, or twine.
Hey Minnesota, Larry you have truly inspired me and my girlfriend to start growing our own and I cannot tell you how many of those pasta rollers we have passed by in the Thrift stores in Maine. You my friend are awesome ! 👍 Thanks
I harvest leaves as they yellow, cut the center rib out then hang them on a line on my veranda to dry, then loosely pack them in a cardboard box and put the boxes in my basement. At first frost I use a branch lopper to get the whole plant, then hang them upside down in my basement. I like to let all of that rest for a year before curing/casing the leaves
hi all I'm from Canada and we grew some Virginia Gold and was wondering if you can tell me a good leaf from a moldy leaf? Ours went like a dark brown color with some black. just wanna know so we don't smoke mold.
I'm growing a tobacco plant in a pot on my balcony and it's getting to big so quickly! I think I'll just harvest it slowly as the leaves turn yellow like you stated; I'll probably also allow it to flower. I'll have to come up with some way to cure the leaves, I'm thinking of hanging them from the bottom of a big, inverted, translucent box, without the lid, that I'll leave in the shade on the balcony. I'll also add holes for proper ventilation.

I have gone through so many equipment trying to shred my tobacco over the years. I now just let my tobacco dry bone dry after color curing and 6 weeks (over-wintering also) aging in open vents in rafters ends. I remove leaf off the main vein and crumble lightly to 1/8 inch and less pieces. Becareful not to crumble too much and make a lot of dust tobacco. I spread out to dry totally dry for storing in airtight or paper bags. The amount needed for 2-3 days rolling. I spread this amount and spray lightly with water and mix to make a uniform moisture for rolling easy. I place unrolled moisten tobacco in a clean coffee tin with lid. I am soo happy with the results of rolling and smoking experience using this method. No tar gum cleaning of tools. Warning; Wear a face mask while crumbling dry tobacco. The dusty air can mess with breathing and a strong nicotine high (not a good feeling).

Hello sir, I was given tobacco from my mother's village as a gift. He said that I have to steam it first to remove some of the nicotine. How do I do this? ( all this was done through my husband which wasn't given any information about the steaming. )
I pulled off some of my flyings too early, still green. Should I put them on the wash-line, in the sun, to get them yellow, or are they going to dry green no matter what? I grew Pa. 41.

So if you long term air cure your tobacco does it also ferment or is fermenting another procedure that must be done? Or do you just smoke after they are air cured
Hey Larry, I got some of your seeds few months back and man... The plants themselves are beautiful. Wondering if you could do a quick tutorial on how to to cure if you picked prematurely. Had a couple humongous leaves that were still green. Got a Lil anxious and harvested them.

I am out of seeds until this fall!
Larry if you have anymore seeds please email me @ justrolling96@gmail.com
After shredding, do I smoke direct or are there any other processes like get the flavor right or adding flavor to your shredded tobacco?
Jeśli twój tytoń , nie jest zielony to już przestajesz go suszyć, teraz przeprowadzasz fermentacje w celu pozbycie się amoniaku . Aromatyzacja po suszeniu nic nie poprawi.
Thank you that was very helpful this is my first time growing I'm in Australia we're not allowed to do it here
larry can you tell me how to make a chamber or the best way to cure it?
This is an amazing video, about to try my own this summer. Why is your shredder so squeaky though, can you lubricate it at all? I had a brain aneurysm watching the end but I loved it.
What about a kittle electric coffee bean grinder? I have uses mine for herbs. I have a big Calea Zaccatucichi bush I have harvested and is a tobacco sub, but known as dream herb.. But I want to grow my own in SE FL and make my own ciggarettes, and stop paying $50.00 a week to marlboro for a carton. Strands, I lovethe handcrank machine...
$50 a carton for reds? Wow! NYC it's more like $130.
can imagine a herb slicer would work!
What was that device you were using to shred your tobacco at the very end of the video? I need to get my hands on one.
how do u get the leaves to be not too brittle when dried?
So if you long term air cure your tobacco does it also ferment or is fermenting another procedure that must be done? Or do you just smoke after they are air cured
rolling tobacco is now $70 for a 30 gram in nz thanks for the video
Hey Larry, I got some of your seeds few months back and man... The plants themselves are beautiful. Wondering if you could do a quick tutorial on how to to cure if you picked prematurely. Had a couple humongous leaves that were still green. Got a Lil anxious and harvested them.
Try not to pick green very hard to turn the color on them but mist with a spray bottle that does help them! Thanks So Much For Watching The Video! See All My Most Popular Video's By Category On Pinterest! www.pinterest.com/larryhall50/boards/
