- A hilarious sendup of "On the Waterfront", with Sid reprising the Marlon Brando he did so effectively in the much shorter spoof of "Streetcar Named Desire" on YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS.
Unfortunately, this version is slightly marred by a droning musical score added to the soundtrack when this sketch was repackaged for reruns on Comedy Central. I don't know why Sid decided to do this (he seemingly had total control over the repackaged reruns)-- it really detracts from the dialogue. But I'm delighted to have a copy of this sketch to see at all, considering that it's NEVER been released to home video. This copy comes courtesy of a fellow Sid Caesar fan from Europe who recorded a couple of hours of the reruns, which haven't been seen on TV for over 25 years. Thank you, Richard!

When Sid does Brando you actually feel like your on the waterfront. He nailed his body movements, and speech patterns. This was a treat to watch.
Ditto on that... Never was a greater actor
It's amazing how they worked up this sketch in one week, but even more amazing is that it has an orchestral score.

These sketches were priceless comedy. Sid Caesar, Howie Morris and Carl Reiner were geniuses. 70 years later and they still make me laugh. And no filth, blood or gore. And Nanette Fabre and Imogene Cocoa really added to the brilliance.

He really nailed Brando's speech. I mean, every time. He wasn't just slow, but he had the moves, the pauses, the little stutters.
He did a wonderful job, agreed, and it wasn't the standard Brando impersonation, rather an impression. Check out the Brando he did on Your Show of Shows (A Streetcar Named ???)--in one shot, he even manages to look like him! --kjh

That was Howard Morris, the 'stooge' character actor who passed away in 2005. He played the 'jerk-idiot' on the Andy Griffith shows for many years. A brilliant actor he was. So much talent on these clips!

In this opening scene you can see the Queens Burrow Bridge behind Sid Caesar who hits a home run with his clean humor. We need more clean uplifting shows, movies to make us laugh like Sid’s line: so I don’t have to walk home in the dark. What a great line.

This spoof of "On the Waterfront" actually moves me to tears just as much as the real film -- which is really sayin' something b/c I love the latter beyond measure. From what I've read, Sid & Marlon Brando were actually great friends -- so I think this was actually a heartfelt tribute to the material on which it was based. There's just something very poignant about all of this -- and it's amazingly well-done, given the pressures & constraints of live TV (especially back then). . . .

The guy who plays "Pop" (Howard Morris, people might recognize him as Ernest T. Bass) resembles the actor in the actual movie, I think. Morris would be well over 100 today as would most of the actors from Your Show of Shows -- not sure if any actor remains although Mel Brooks is still with us, God bless him. Woody Allen wrote for other Sid Caesar stuff, but 1954 (last year of YSOS) is a heck of a long time ago, almost 70 years. Woody was too young to have been a writer for the show. I think one actor from the Honeymooners is still around, Joyce Randolph and she is 98 now. On the Waterfront itself from 1954 has Eva Saint Marie still around and she, too, is 98.

I like the opening with the list of gum flavors, because the most memorable line for me from the original film was: "Have a stick of gum" -- which I've always found kind of hilarious. (I don't remember much else about the movie, but I remember that line seeming sort of ridiculously incongruous in context.)
I forgot all about that line-- I haven't seen "On the Waterfront" since I was in college 140 years ago. But the opening with the list of gums still made me laugh without my even really understanding why they were including it! Thanks for the comment, TPC! [wgw]
I think I saw it when I was in college too -- which must have been _150_ years ago, since I think I'm about 10 years older than you! ;)
Wow... I arrived here after hearing Mel Brooks talk about Sid Ceaser on Conan O'Brian's 'Serious Jibber-Jabber'.
I immediately recognised Carl Reiner, because he created the Dick Van Dyke show, but I cannot remember... Did Sid Ceaser ever feature in the Dick Van Dyke show? I feel like he played Rob's old war buddy or something...
Anyway, fantastic sketch / episode... Truly classic, but still genuinely funny by modern standards.
It's true, no one likes a cop-kisser.
Of course, in the broken wall scene, I thought immediately of the scene from "My Favorite Year," and I can't help wondering if the writers of that movie made a point of having King Kaiser doing the same as an homage to this "On the Docks" scene.
Carl had such a presence...as did Sid and Howie.

That cracks me up every. single. time. The physical comedy Sid incorporates and the gestures are almost as good as what he does with Brando's speech patterns. --kjh
According to Wikipedia: “Writer Mel Brooks, who also became his close friend, said, ‘I know of no other comedian, including Chaplin, who could have done nearly ten years of live television. Nobody's talent was ever more used up than Sid's. He was one of the greatest artists ever born. But over a period of years, television ground him into sausages.’”
Nanette Fabray is a real drag on the ensemble. She's okay, but very bland. Imogene Coca was always hysterical and meshed so well with the others.
She looks a lot more like Eva Marie Saint than Imogene does though
