The car used during this video is a 2001 VW Jetta.
This Transmission Fluid and Filter change was done with common hand tools found in most Home Garages.

Your suggestion on not removing the overflow stem because its plastic is great because there's really no need to remove it & its very risky especially if your not working under a car lift. I probably would have figured this out after doing it the first time but im glad I ran across your video because removing that step is a very good precaution. That stem was actually my main concern.

Thanks so much for the video. This is exactly what I needed. I wasted a whole day searching for a good vid on this procedure. I was finding some that just showed doing it without explanation and the whole procedure just looked sloppy or they just glossed over so many things that you had touched up on. Your explanation was thorough and clear. And, that means I can follow and understand. Thanks....not just a thumbs up but 5 stars!

I got my 2001 GTI new I think my repair man did not do a good gob servicing the car in the last year. The engine light came on last week and took it to him and he still did not do it right, the light came on again. I took it to the VW dealership, they give me a big bill .I have to get it done I know they will do it right . Watching this video motivate me to check on my car in the future . I usually never do anything on a M/V .Sir, you make it look easy to do work on a car. I will be watching YOU TUBE on any problem that comes up in the future to get it fixed myself. Thanks you. I'll be following your channel. Thanks again.

This is the best guidance I've seen on how to do this right. It is a slightly awkward procedure, anyway, because you need a level and solid base, to jack up the car, but you will not be paying a huge labour bill at a dealers to do something like this correctly. Thanks.

Super awesome video, but something I learned is that if you don’t replace your transmission fluid regularly replacing it can actually corrode and wear away your seals.

    Hi
A matter-of-fact instructional video by a mechanic who obviously knows his stuff...unlike other videos that add bs comments and crappy music.
Btw, the procedure is identical for my Mk3 Golf except that the drain plug is also a 5mm Allen key (same as the plastic overflow pipe). I used Pentosin the first time and ZF5 ATF the second time. Both are expensive and both work very well. I bought the filter and gasket from RockAuto.

My 2003 jetta GLS 2.0 has been in limp mode, the only other time it wasn’t , was when I had to get a new alternator and it shifted great for a month or two without the CEL. When the CEL came back, the car went into limp mode. Went to autozone & I had codes p0743 (two of them), my mechanic says I should change the solenoids but that might not be a permanent fix. I have been thinking about flushing my transmission fluid, do you think this can help my car get back to normal since I have read that dirty transmission fluid could throw those same codes. He also suggested to just get a another used transmission for a more secure way of fixing it.
What do you think ? I want to sell it but I don’t want to sell it like this.

Love the video. It is very informative, practical and packed with useful tips. I do not wish to be rude, but as you are giving a tutorial, it would be extremely helpful to at least mention the torque-specs for the bolts as everyone will not be comfortable with the guess tight method. As some of us do not have your extensive experience and do not wish to mess up our wife';s car by not torquing the bolts correctly. I believe that you can get it right by feel, I'm just not sure that I can. I love your video in every other respect and will check your site out when I do other repairs. Keep up the good work

I'll be doing this once my Trans cooler and filter come in. Super content with this video. And I have all the confidence. Only one question, while filling up the Trans when I get done installing the Trans pan, should I fill it up first with the amount that came out, let it warm up to temp, go through all gears, then pop the plug and go from there? I will also be making sure that while the car is on jack stands, it's gonna be completely level. Also, what size hose should I get, looks like 5/8th maybe?

I have heard that it's not advised to change the fluid on a high mileage transmission due to the worn gears not being able to accept the clean new fluid.
With that in mind, would it be advised to just add some fluid or stop slip to the correct level in the case of an old transmission with dark fluid and fine metal powder in it?

I tried this and it didn’t really work for me. The most easiest way to do this job and don’t have to worry about putting to much or to less is to get the kit. They are about $53 on eBay. 3-Liter exactly to refill. Oil and filter. I also put the old atf back in the new empty bottles and measure if I put the same amount.

  • @talk2stars

    • @johng8967
      @johng8967 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

talk2stars You will need VAGCOM, it’s a very expensive tool for VW and most European cars. Believe me, I bought one and try to do this job myself. The Most problem people have doing this job is putting the right amount of ATF. The tranny has to be in between 95F - 113F and leave. Too save you the trouble, just buy the kit on online. Comes with 3L ATF and filter, No need to worry about putting too much or less.
