The mechanic is Wolker Franck. I was a collaborator in the change of a Mak generator crankshaft in 1989 on the San Juan ship between Buenos Aires and Santos. A hydraulic coupling broke in the middle of the trip and I made it on the onboard lathe. Great person, he rewarded me in spades. I always remember your great work, Wolker from Hamburg. Abrazo Amigo..!!!
I love this vid because I am a chief engineer in the french navy, and I 'd like being a mechanic teacher. It 's good for improving my english as well. Thanks a lot to Caterpillarinc.
I know im randomly asking but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any help you can give me
@Alan Cameron Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
The piston studs are extended and coupled to hydraulic pistons that are arranged to pull together on the application of pressure. The force is reacted via the tube fitted over each stud, to the top of the head. This allows very precise and equal tensioning of the studs on assembly, the nuts simply being run down by hand to make firm contact, then the tensioning pressure is released. To remove, a little extra tension is applied to release the nuts that then may be freely rotated as we can see.
Thanks. Something that just occurred to me while I watched it again, using the hydraulics so the nuts can be turned by hand, saves the threads on the studs. Also applying equal pressure to all the studs at once prevents the head from deflecting.
I'm just an old motor head, I've never seen anything like this before. This is very interesting. I'd never heard about stretching head bolts to loosen the nuts before. I'd be very curious to learn more about why its done that way. I can spend hours watching this stuff. Thanks for posting it
Its what you do when you tighten a nut, you are simply stretching the bolt, doing it hydraulically all the bolts are equally stretched the same length, hence evenly torqued.
The polishing ring that was removed prevents excessive carbon build up around the top of the piston crown above the top compression ring, this prevents carbon from polishing away the cross hatching.
@tpvalley the charge air inlet is connected in a horizontal plane at the rear of the head. fastening of the charge air inlet is done via an o-ring, not exactly 'push-fit' but a flat face seal created when the head is tensioned.
it actually is this simple (with the exceptions of some bolts that's stuck). The annoying part is that these engines are usually inline 6-9, so you have to repeat this process a number of times corresponding to the amount of cylinders you have. Very time-consuming :)
I guess the bolts and nuts have some torque in real life [unlike effortless wrenching shown here]. Disconnecting a fuel line will spill its contents [not a dry tube as seen here]. Insides are more oily too.
for sure.... i worked for MaK for yrs, to fit 9 heads, all pipes, all rockers, tappets set and ready to run took 4.5hrs... (well it was a friday, and the pub was about to open)
Actually the pink color on the chain is a safety feature. The paint on the chain is a special compound that if the chain is used at excessive temperatures, the paint will turn brown. Excessive temperatures would cause the chain to lose it's strength and a safety hazard would result.
I wish some of this technology was available in engines a 10th this size. Exhaust manifolds that don't break off? anti-polishing rings? crankcase doors? This is a slow and measured process shown here and it IS only one cylinder, but I have spent quite a lot of time doing similar on smaller engines and had a LOT more frustration! lol
i want to repower to these 32 series so bad. were still running MaK 8-453c. they've done well for the last 20 years, but with retrofitting and increased kw demand the extra 700kw per engine would really be noticed!
@maw9779 Actually, that's incorrect. The lifting gear is all different colours depending on the testing schedule. For example, Jan - Mar blue, Mar - Apr Red, etc. This system ensures that only lifting equipment which has passed testing is used.
@@krunobrzi666 i've been looking for this answer. that's so much procedure to get it done.he says stretching head bolts. I was wondering what he meant by that.
Great work, I think bigger the engine, better to work on. Cat in one of the best diesel engines in the world. The biggest one I worked on is the 3406 for trucks and construction equipment. Wll look at website for more videos like this, Thanks for sharing.
Hope they fit correct piston ring as per revs min, therefore no oil loss.like we experienced in 1975 with new Mak installed on DUTCH ocean tug FRIESLAND
+dizzywow It's a dry sump. The oil is pumped to a seperate tank by the scavenge pump and the engine driven lub oil pump sucks from there to the engine.
Hi, Dean! Your local Cat dealer can help you with that info. To find a location near you, visit www.cat.com/en_US/support/dealer-locator.html?. - Efren
Almost all large marine engines are done by a variant of this and have for a long time. The Studs are stretched hydraulically and then nuts put on to basicly and tight and hydraulics removed . Studs remains under stretch giving the holding force of the fastener.. Gives much more holding power than you could do by turning a nut to torque also even distribution of weight and more precise than any torque wrench would be too. I have seen a engine where a vender tried using torque instead. Worked for about a week then nuts loosened themselves and bearing was wiped!
wtf they do all with electronic shits, i would like to see how i worked and i make them work at same conditions it takes about 2 weeks just to open 8 cylinders
I can overlook the bad german accent (i am german myself), but that he repeatedly forgets to use the word *being*.... (...is *being* removed...) .... That gives me a headache -.-'
I totally agree with CRYCOEngineering and that without mentioning when you are at sea. It's so easy and funny, that I pray God if were like that all the time I am on board.
Hard but fluent. It does not matter, the main thing everyone understands it. Ask a British or US-American if he can speak a foreign language at all. lol !
I was thinking the same thing specially when I seen Texter marks on the piston crown lol all that work just to make a video and how about them head studs that's a funny way of doing it

LOL so technical, 5:37 "the head is lifted by means of the lifting device" hahahaha
Ah yes, the floor here is made out of floor.

I'm no marine diesel mechanic, but damn, that looked *way* easier than I bet it is. I see that system fighting you at every step.

would you send me on my mail

That chain is FAAAAAAABULOUUUUUUUUUS.
Awesome Video!🎥
insane 10000 horsepower engine
Is that why they use them on some of the largest and newest ships?
6:10 what is that "polishing ring" that he removes from the block? looks like the cilynder... is it divided in 2 parts? never saw that before.
Isn't the "media guide" as the call it in this video actually what carries the cooling water between the cylinders?
Is this the only way to loosen the head bolts properly?
Yes, it is the only way. It's imposible with hand tools, it need's much more force to loosen or tighten the head nuts.
@@krunobrzi666 i've been looking for this answer. that's so much procedure to get it done.he says stretching head bolts. I was wondering what he meant by that.

How is this engine lubricated? Surely the entire bottom area is not filled with oil...

It's a dry sump. The oil is pumped to a seperate tank by the scavenge pump and the engine driven lub oil pump sucks from there to the engine.
Dear Sir ! My Genset Model CATERPILLAR 3612 Now Water flow into Cylinder . So I want to know your idea.
water pump. blockage in either the block, cooler assembly or external coolers. have you checked both main and auxiliary pumps.
What is the typical time cycle that this procedure is done?
I wonder how easy that is to do on an engine that is 10 years old....
Still very interesting!
Thank you very impressive video and engine, I study small engine repair
After this video i was veering pink shirt, white canvas trousers, and holding a glass of chardonnay in my hand.
Where can you buy connecting rods for this engine ?
Hi, Dean! Your local Cat dealer can help you with that info. To find a location near you, visit www.cat.com/en_US/support/dealer-locator.html?. - Efren
is this already when caterpillar bought MaK?
The way the head nuts are removed is interesting. I guess that ensures no one will be doing thus job on their own.

Dan L yeah I did a bunch of research on the method after watching this. Very cool stuff
Easy to work on.
Why arn't the engines I have to fix all clean & pretty?
Using a torque wrench to break loose bolts?!
my father is chief engenier and he does this in the boat he works the main engine is a MAK... don't know the specs...
Don't forget to label where all the bolts go!
I prefere the 4-stroke medium speed main engines.MAK M 32 is super........
Will this engine fit in my AC Cobra?
@Infandous Ktenology Its fun trying to build your car around this.
