Celebrate a double premier at the Leipzig Opera on November 14, 2005. Riccardo Chailly directs Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” for the first time in his function as General Music Director of the Leipzig Opera. “Un Ballo in Maschera” is as exciting as a thriller, but with a passion that can only be experienced in a Verdi opera. It stands to reason that only a man of equal passion would have the ability of bringing this spectacle to the stage adequately.
The Italian film director Ermanno Olmi born in Bergamo in 1931 is an exception in Italiancinema. His Films (The Legend of the Holy Drinker, The Tree of Wooden Clogs) have the effect of a cinematic revelation in that they contain a profound beauty rarely seen in contemporary film. The stage design is being created by the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodore. One can only wait for the first collaboration of these three Italian artists in Leipzig!

I agree that costumes ugly , sets too. But acting, singing and orchestra very good and the whole performance has great energy. Overall I found it a very satisfying performance.

Can't compare with the recording by Maria Caniglia, Gigli, Fedora Barbieri and Bechi, conducted by Tullio Serafini.

As usual today, the overture is accompanied by the presence on stage of people whom you wonder why they are here and have nothing to do with the action. As for the horrible costumes it corresponds to the actual worldwide bad taste prevailing in arts. One wonders who is the new fool which has staged such a theatrical nonsense. Verdi's libretto is based on a real event which happened in the Sweden court when king Gustave III was murdered in 1772 ( sorry for the previous typing mistake!lol!) in Stockholm's opera house. No use to try to make eccentric costumes without any consistency with the period of the action just to pretend to be original.

I agree. There is general fear to respect the overture "A sipario calato".

Ransom Coates, there is a use for that expression, and it doesn't really apply here, except as
a "double entendre." This trend of "modernizing" operas and putting the poor singers into ghastly costumes and onto ugly stages has taken over worldwide, unfortunately. I don't know why these directors think they are doing the arts any favors, quite the contrary: the plot is set in a specific time and place, and it often has a great bearing on the plot. What has gotten into even the best theaters of the world that they accept and put on such unviewable productions? Please bring back the operas as they were meant to be presented!

Poveri cantanti, poco diretti e costretti ad indossare dei costumi che non hanno alcun senso. Scene e costumi, così importanti nell'allestimento scenico sono controproducenti e rendono difficile seguire l'opera.
