Fabulous. Arbuckle was a sweetheart. he gave Keaton his break in Hollywood and helped a lot of others, too. very sad, what they did to him was terrible. 🌷🌱🥀

Totally funny part Buster is playing and in the same year they made The Cook which was delightful. The part where the horse gets drunk is very funny.

When Buster shoots the card shark and rolls him into the cellar with the flower from his lapel and a tip of his hat, that's funny!

The western trope of shooting at someone's feet to make them dance has been used in a lot of films.
Even Michiale J Fox in Back to the Future danced when his feet were shot at, of course he did the "Moon Walk"

Well, i remember reading about buster having native american ancestry in him, and supposedly being taught to dance by the great "bojangles" mr. bill robinson when he was working with his parents as the three keatons in vaudeville as a youth.

Salvation Army lady to the rescue! The depiction of the black character wasn't usual for the time, but still uncomfortable to see.

+Anna Ferrara exactly.. I think, since this film is just meant to be a representation of The West, in the 19th century, they were adding accuracy to the movie. you don't think it was racist of Arbuckle to add in this do you? just curious... I hope fatty and buster didn't like racism..

+Anna Ferrara Buster was not racist, as evidenced in his autobiography

Yeah! a poor black man saved by a kind white woman. it isn't any wonder why half of black men in this country chose white women over there own women.

If true, there wouldn't be Black communities at all, and all Blacks would be of mixed breed. As there are still large full-Black communities in 2017, this statement is simple-minded, and based on a farcical movie!

I'm so glad someone noticed that scene of the black patron or patron being very unfairly tortured and tormented by those uncouth and very pugnacious cowboys. today this disturbing scene is considered really racist and most un pc, but in this world war one era this was just the form of humor that was widely accepted by most of the movie going audiences.sadly.

Correction: I'm so glad someone noticed that scene of the black patron or patron of color receiving very unfairly treatment from those very cruel and pugnacious cowboys, today this moment in the film is highly considered quite racist and unpc.but in this world war one era this was just the humor of the period.which was widely accepted by most of the moviegoers sadly.

I think it wasn't meant to be funny. It makes the girl look very kind and sweet when she comes to comfort the man of color. But that's just my observation

@@siredmondjohniii2283 I can see what you mean, however I believe more needs to be said. in the same way "boys will be boys" covers sexism, this scene wags a finger at the racists when the black man's white savior arrives. Her quick turn around and flirtation with the racists then says it: "racists will be racists." couch it in all the understanding you want, it is what it is. It speaks to the times, but to the racism in those times. In watching Chaplin's films from the same period, so far I haven't come across anything like this. There did exist better men, and thank god there always does. I'll still enjoy others of Buster's films, and he does offer a somewhat convoluted understanding of the perils of racism (by using quasi-blackface) in Neighbors (1920), but he was a man of his times who was too short sighted to rise above them. He briefly used all-out blackface in The Playhouse (1921). He wasn't the worst, but he could have known better. We owe it to the progress we enjoy to acknowledge such truth, and to the times we live in not to ever say that ignorance is excusable.
