  • In this video I show you how to build a small tree with spooky hands for branches. How to paint it and how to make the eyes glow. It can also hold candy in the top. This is a beginner friendly video!

a couple of common questions answered:
*Why did you say "tinfoil" while you were building?*
I said tinfoil out of habit but at *54* seconds in I give the supplies list and say, "you need aluminum foil". The supplies list, the description box, and my blog, all call for aluminum foil.
I did say tin in this video while building,, oops, it was a mistake. Yes, you are right, it's called aluminum foil. I have done my best to break the habit tho and I’ve managed to keep the word tinfoil out of my videos since. 😅
*How much foil did I use?*
I didn't measure but definitely less than 40 feet. I actually want to say about 20 - 30 but it's safer to guess beyond that. How much you use will depend on the size of tree you make. I used the cheapest foil I could find, you do not need heavy duty foil.
*Can I paint the inside chamber where the light goes?*
Absolutely! I did paint one of mine black in case I didn't use tissue paper. It worked out fabulous.
    *Can I add more branches?*
You can add on and take away anything you want to. This is a project you can do just about anything with. Have fun!

@Where The Gnomes Live - Many people use the term tin foil when they are actually talking about aluminum foil; seems like everyone knows what they are referring to. Also, it's a lot quicker to say. ;-)

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

yes! Thank you.. there are some people who are focusing on the word, it's a distraction for them. I never even gave it a thought before this video. I walk into any store and ask where they keep their tin foil and without a blink of an eye I'm directed right to the aluminum foil. It's been referred to as tin foil all my life. I'll try very hard to remember to always call it aluminum in future videos.. I can't make it a promise though, I get all carried away grabbing that tin foil! lol

This woman is one of the best craft teachers I've found on youtube. She not only explains clearly what she's doing and what materials she's using, but she also gives you different options on other materials and methods that will either work the same, or give you different effects depending on what you want. Fantastic stuff!

I don't always find posts where I can follow to a Tee what they are doing, but I find your directions easy to follow, especially when you explained about the arms drying with the glue and then becoming soggy agsin after painting. If I didn't know I might panic. Thanks for your inspiration!

Your technique is perfect for the Banyan Tree that I'm needing to make for my stop-motion animated film. Your method allows for some movement of the fingers and hands (the way I"m leaving the fingers not so glued and a bit more flexible). The Banyan has those creepy air roots dripping down from the top and your idea works well with that, Plus, I'm adding in some rope tendrils too. Thank you for your excellent instructions and directions.

My tree that I built into a corner of my craft room is almost 5ft, (If I'm remembering correctly), my cats love love love it but the Gnomes don't like cats hahaha And yes, I find building to be relaxing and therapeutic for me. I absolutely love this! Awesome project. It launched me right into memories of the mean trees in the Wizard of Oz movie. It also makes me think of Treebeard.

I want to thank you for your tips to make this such a fun project! Your tree is fabulous! It’s cool to see how they slowly develop their personality as you make them! To save a little on using too much foil, I recycled the paper towel empty roll and a couple of lids from our take out Mexican bowls. The lids were sturdy for the base and arms. Happy Halloween!

HOLY COW!!!! THAT IS SO AMAZING. Who knew you could manipulate foil, masking tape and paper towels to make an amazing project? Oh wait...you did! That is totally amazing. I may try this, but I know it will not look anything like yours. How long, from start to finish did this take you to make? You are truly an amazingly, talented artist.

Wow! This is fantastic! I love it and am going to make one with tin foil!! I remember when I was in elementary school in the late 40's & early 50's I was so envious of the kids who had sandwiches wrapped in tin foil. I asked my Mom to wrap mine in tin foil & she said it was too expensive! Anyway it will always be tin foil to me. You are so talented & clever! Thank you for sharing this!

Simply amazing! I have plans for making a Halloween Diorama for Toy Photography this October and not only did you teach me how to make the coolest trees ever, but this also solves my Pumpkin problem. I really appreciate how you show and verbally explain every step. It made it very easy to follow along and helped the process seem less daunting. Some tutorials fall short in that department, but yours was very well executed. Thanks so much for one of the best tutorials I've seen!

Love your technique/work. You are very good in your instruction. You dont waste words and time. You say and instruct exactly what needs to be said. So many waste so much time just blathering on n on. Your instruction is awesom!
