It's majestic just watching these guys play any song. They just respect the music. Jerry's riffs mid song are just so delicate and pure.We are lucky to have these videos
Desolation Row off of Dylan's Hwy 64 Revisited is likely my favorite song of all time. I've always been mystified by the guitar that dances it's way through the song. Add some of his best lyrics and a wonderfully long song that you can get lost in and it makes for a perfect song. I just heard this version and I can't believe how much I love it. Jerry's guitar is different but equally wonderful. I'm in heaven .
Yeah brian desolation row is one of my top favorite dylan songs along with sad eyed lady of the lowlands and sooner or later one of must know off of blond on blond album. I saw dylan at the cleveland music hall on november 12, 1965 and he did desolation row it was his first electric tour and I was 14 years old. I met dylan in cleveland on july 17, 1991 he was walking by himself down at lake erie. I looked up and he was walking toward me. He stopped and shook my hand. Stay safe and healthy.
This is one of my favorite Desolation Row versions, Bobby's cadence is in perfect time,, and Jerry's nuance licks are impeccable! I love the dead doing this tune!
I'm a Dylan fan all the way. I listened to the Dead pretty close til like 1976. This is a really nice version of a tune that is simultaneously profound, and easy to sound pretentious on. The whole band is right on asusual, and Bob and Jerry are really sparkling... this is a very strong version of an important song.
Even after becoming so familiar with tunes the Dead still deliver each one, their own or covers, with so much respect and effort......and on this one, everyone, but Bobby in particular, just puts it out there with 100% sincerity
Jerry’s guitar playing here is masterful and I think underrated in the comments. His phrasing is so unique and original while being moving and intellectually interesting. My guitar idol ❤️
Wow 100 shows That's alot. I have been to 35 dylan shows since 1965. I met dylan on july 17,1991. He was very nice to me. I saw the dead with dylan at the Akron rubber bowl. Stay healthy and safe.
Bobby's singing so powerful. Jerry's playing so beautiful. Absofuckinglutely nothing like a GD concert. I'm so much luckier than Brad Pitt, K Karsashithead or any wealthy Hollywood plastic robotic media mannequin (a world I grew up around) for having been there with these guys for hundreds of shows over 35 years. Brent was 1 month younger than me, and here we see him shortly before his passing. After he died, I realized I was lucky I never got to play keyboards with them because something happened to everyone in that seat...even ending with Vince. If you weren't part of the scene into these guys, you have not experienced the magnitude of synchronicity hardly imaginable by outsiders. I always thought the Dead were like a lens or prism for human connections. I could write about dozens of strange "coincidences" of meeting people in far flung places "coincidentally" who I had met earlier in my life in totally unrelated circumstances. People 20 years apart who I didn't even know except for 2 crossings. Crazy stuff. It's what happens out on Desolation Row.
Very nicely said deadtimber. As a major league Dylan fan, I think that the dead do the best covers of his work. With only a few notable exceptions, the only covers I listen to.
@@jokerman6015 what’s so great about Bob (well, one of a million things) is that he fulfills all the “cover” desires for changing things up, because he’s basically “covered” many of his songs by playing them completely differently in different concerts and at different stages of his life. To take just one example, Hard Rain album and No Direction Home versions are almost completely different songs compared to the Rolling Thunder version. One outside cover I particularly appreciate (besides this one) is Jerry’s 1995 performance of Visions of Johanna available on TH-cam. Take care. Cool screen name. (Edit: wow, didn’t realize this was a 6 yr old thread. Hope you are still well and enjoying Dylan.)
@track2009saratoga That same thought occurred to me years ago but it quickly became apparent to me that Mr Dylan would never allow anyone to think he had messed up, or had forgotten a lyric. One facet of the genius that is Bob Dylan is his ability to instantly "rewrite" and substitute a new, meaningful, coherent, perfectly synchronized lyric, phrase or line so seamlessly you'd think it was original, rehearsed and "old hat". He never ceases to amaze :-)
was at every albany, new york show...and no matter how bad it got before Jerry died...it was still the GOOD OL' GRATEFUL DEAD....miss tripping around the country on summer tour...but age and time happens.....
if they gave Academy Awards for songs Bob Weir should have one for this song. it is so good I have to hear it every Night. And Jerry's solo part is nothing less that perfection.
Thankfully I got to see them, 2 nights free tickets, Oakland Colosseum. New Year's 1985 ( I think! It's a bit hazy..). Grateful - thanks for letting me in as an honorary Deadhead!
listen up, generation y. this is one of dylan´s best ever, played by one of the best live bands ever. if you don´t like it, go send another text. you´ll feel better immediately.
Great version of a great song. If you like Dylan covers try Sinead Logan To Ramona (my favourite), Youssou N'dour Chimes of Freedom, UB40 I'll be your Baby Tonight, Bryan Ferry A Hard Rain
interprétation fidèle dans sa force à Dylan. Depuis des décennies je traverse la vie avec ce cirque et la chute finale: yes I received your letter yesterday...
This was the only Albany run I ever missed, tickets were so tight from mail order. This version is on the Dead play Dylan. It is a remarkable version too. I hope Bobby brings it back with Furthur.
We in the Bay Area, at least me anyway, always thought of these guys as our backyard band, our local guys. We really didn't realize how big they were for a long time. A few years back I was up close at the Greek Theater in Hollywood at a Robert Plant concert. Robert fucking Plant, Led Zepplin. Now he's big. International big. At the end of the show, he said, "I haven't been here in a very long time. Since the days of the superbands, you know, like the Grateful Dead." In uncontrolled reflex, my fist went up and I yelled "Jeeeeeeeeeery!". Plant looked down and kind of smiled, then continued on with what he was saying. I was just so amazed that he would reference the Dead, because to me, they were always our guys, our home team that you had to be on the fringes to know about. Obviously that wasn't the case.
LOL, I realized their Grateness...that's why I went to hundreds of shows! But in traveling the US and world, I was always surprised how many people had never heard of them or thought they were just some old 60's "act". Funny, I did meet several people who only went to 1 show in their life, and that was the only time they ever dropped...and more than once they told a story like Santana's recounting of his experience at Woodstock.
It's majestic just watching these guys play any song. They just respect the music. Jerry's riffs mid song are just so delicate and pure.We are lucky to have these videos
I was present. Blew my young mind. Didn't know it was a Dylan song for 20 years. Dosin at the Knick!
3/31/87 best desolation row ever!!! IMO..... Was that some kind of joke!!!! Best live band singing the best song writers song's how can you go wrong.
YES!!!! That is my FAVORITE part!

Me 2!! Over and over and over!!
This is one of my favorite Desolation Row versions, Bobby's cadence is in perfect time,, and Jerry's nuance licks are impeccable! I love the dead doing this tune!
Sweet! My favorite band playing a Dylan song! Nothing better in the world my friends.
Bob Dylan said the Grateful Dead completed his songs they covered. Highest compliment EVER. JUST PURE MAGIC. EPIC
I can watch this again and again. I just hope I never get tired :) Pure magic.
Brent’s Piano work amazing as always, RIP Brent

calypsojimmy don’t forget about how Brent kicked it back in thru communication
Just found this, sitting in an airport in Malaysia...thank you....amazing experience
What a random, Yet golden discovery.......🤘
Even after becoming so familiar with tunes the Dead still deliver each one, their own or covers, with so much respect and effort......and on this one, everyone, but Bobby in particular, just puts it out there with 100% sincerity
Fantastic!!!! BRAVO! I usually do not listen to anyone trying to sing Dylan's songs....but you are GREAT!!!!!
Jerry’s guitar playing here is masterful and I think underrated in the comments. His phrasing is so unique and original while being moving and intellectually interesting. My guitar idol ❤️
Let"s get going to heaven then.......and fast! This version is blessed. Jerry is the gift that keeps on giving.
bobby mastering all the lyrics while rippin out dozens of chord inversions
been to about 100 dead shows and never seen not 1 fight or even anybody angry the best times of my life!!
that's really commendable for a band. just shows the true spirit of the 60's and 70's.
Wow 100 shows

By far the best night the Dead played this song. Love it is an understatement
Alpine 89
There was a great Desolation Version from Philly Spectrum in 1986-1987 I believe

You’re luckier than me I wish I could’ve gone to a dead show when jerry was still alive
Great sound quality for one great masterpiece! Thanks, Bob for creating one of my all-time favs, and the Dead for covering this!

There is a heaven and you can read all about it in the Bible.
Jerry toca a guitarra como um violino, isto é impressionante. Que banda que tenho o prazer de curtir a dezenas de anos.
A melhor de todas
Happy Birthday Jerry. No one could play Dylan like you did brother.
An outstanding version!
My favorite Dylan song, and Jerry illuminates the melody very nicely.
Mesmerizing. Real Music.

One of Dylan best lyrics. And he has so many, Also love Visions of Johanna.

Bob Dylan did, of course. He wrote the lyrics saying so
Wwwwwword.

The Gratefuldead do everything better then any original singer of any songs ! So that’s it for the other one ! Morning dew ! ❤
I agree. They do the best covers of Dylan. I saw them together at the stadium on Foxboro, MA. I think it was 1986.
