My heart felt condolences to you and your family .. I can certainly sympathize/empathize, especially around the holiday season. My older brother Jeff (#Forever38) committed suicide Oct. 13, 1997 .. His birthday is/was Dec. 13, 1959. His daughter (only child), whose birthday is Nov. 26, was 1 y/o. She has no memories of Jeff except for what she was told .. I was living in a small WA town along the west coast at the time when I got the unfortunate news. I was a 'more than moderate' drinker and didn't have a phone at the time. One can only imagine just how suddenly nervous I became when I saw a LEO pull up in front and come to my door. I thought "what in the hell did I do last night!?" My family had to contact the local PD to notify me that there was a death in the family and to call home. My initial thoughts was that one of my parents had passed. I could never have fathomed this type of news. It was a shock to the system .. It was difficult to get thru these 3 months in the beginning.
It's been 24 years now. I love and miss Jeff very much. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him or a memory get's triggered by something like a song or movie that we both liked. Today .. our mom has dementia .. there have been times when she has asked why we haven't heard from him lately. All I can do now is tell her that he's been busy with work or something and maybe he will call later.
It is difficult to find words of comfort .. and as cliche' as this statement is .. "life" will become easier as time passes ..
      ✝ 🙏 RIP to both ..

Billy Powell on Piano. Artimus Pyle on drums. and Cassie Gaines, Jojo Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins the Honketts back up vocals. Steve G was the guitarist lost in the place crash and newly discovered by Ronnie and the group through his sister Cassie who was one of the back up vocalist; who was also killed in the crash. Steve was young and just coming into his own. The world missed out on years of amazing southern rock this band would have produced when the tragic crash happening in 1977. It's what we guitarists refer to as "jamming". Skynyrd was the master of the Three Guitar Army. Allen Collins directed that solo like a majordomo.

Yeah exactly man, it's like a jigsaw puzzle their musical Arrangements. They were so talented. But even though I am a guitar player but as a musician you have absolutely got to shout out to the base which Isley on Wilkinson and to the drummer which is Artimus Pyle. What a fantastic Rhythm Section did you hear that base near the end? He's doing like 64th notes all the way up the neck and it's just absolutely nuts and it's all about the energy of it at that point.

    • @stevedahlberg8680

They named the band after their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, because he hated the boys' long hair (rock/counter culture, rebels against authority, etc.). It's pronounced LIN-erd SKIN-erd.

Yep Lin-erd Skin-erd. Band named after their HS principal or coach(?) that gave them shit about their hair all the time. So they grew their hair even longer and named the band after him.
Aww man, wish yall had done the live version. It just blasts off.
    Check it out some time.
But yeah, this is kind of an anthem song. About leaving things behind. Not really wanting to go but the guys got to grow and he has to let go of a chapter in his life with his girlfriend.
It became symbolic for Ronnie Van Zant for many fans after his death. Very moving song live. Saw them with and without Ronnie. The concert after he had died was moving. His brother became the singer and they put Ronnies signature hat he wore on a mic stand as they played.
Wasnt a dry eye in the first few rows.
You gotta hear the live version. Even if you just watch it without putting it on youtube.
And yep that was Skynyrds trade mark as far as the guitars. Three guitars actually on the live version. Steve, Gary and Allen. Allman Brothers Band did the harmonizing guitar thing also. Some of that was from jazz influence. Lots of harmonization in jazz bands.

If you were to fight all the rock stars over time in a tournament. The lead singer of this band Ronnie Van Zant would come out victorious...and it would not be close.
