    Great episode! To answer your question: when the Republic of Ireland gained independence (initially as the Irish Free State), the north was split off because the (largely protestant) Unionist majority wished to remain part of the UK. However, the border was gerrymandered to guarantee a Unionist majority while keeping hold of as much land as possible. And these Unionists are the descendants of planters from the UK who settled in Ireland to take control of the land. It’s a long, complicated history.

      @ OK it’s still the point of if you’re travelling anywhere you can do as much research online as possible and this isn’t apodcast ?this too many people call their videos podcast these days?
