Something I noticed about Martijn's film-making: this video was spent mainly in a dark basement, digging soil. It could make for quite a boring video, that is dark and unenjoyable. But Martijn regularly interspaces the digging shots with footage of the trees, the sky, the mountains. It keeps it from feeling too dark and enclosed while still showing the work that he's doing. Oh it is mine too! Seeing Martjin’s video is the highlight of my week. I seriously will hold off watching until it’s quiet in the house so I can enjoy and taken in all the he is sharing with us.
Hi Martijn. I love the addition of hens. I have had hens throughout my life, if you let them out in the afternoon, say 2pm as an example they will forage and scratch and generally have a great time. At dusk they will want to roost for the night. This is a good time to feed them. I generally call them and shake a container of wheat or whatever food I'm feeding them, trains them to come back and eat before settling for the night. They like routine. Will take a week or two for them to feel at home. I'm imagining cooked eggs with your homemade bread, will taste like heaven. Exciting progress with the floor. Thank you for sharing your life. Love from New Zealand ❤
You will love the chickens, we have 26 and they ALL have names, they are like humans with different natures, we have a white leghorn and her name is powdered sugar🤪granddaughter mainly named them, Oreo, buttercup, cinnamon, dandelion, and so on, a calf named Sebastian, and 9 goats…all with names, getting hard to remember them all
In the south, we might say that your chickens have "done fell into some high cotton,"...meaning they had landed in the lap of luxury. Your chicken condo is great! As always, time spent with you is relaxing and inspiring. Thank you!
What I have learned from Martijn is that if you just keep steadily working at something, repetitive and never-ending though it may seem, you can achieve great things. I love how he just does the work, doesn't look for shortcuts or complain, just perseveres until it's done.
Yes, agree Martjin is inspirational and encouraging. He is so laid back, honest, and unafraid of messing up; that encourages lesser energetic beings (like myself) to give it a go : ) He also makes me realise of how good it is to do things myself, and get back to basics
One shovel at a time. One barrow at a time. One piece of slate at a time.😳. You certainly are committed. I just have to see the finished product. I've been watching in awe now for the past several months. I'm still in awe.
You may consider a chicken first aid/medicine kit as they are prone to various injuries and illnesses and depending on availability in your area you should consider having these things on hand before they are critical needs.
I truly look forward to a video each week!! I spend the week hoping it will be close to an hour long. Martijn thank you for all of your time in bringing this to all of us.

Your command of a clear narrative arc really is unparalleled in the DIY universe here on YT. Thank you for reminding us of where the cow shed floor has come from -- decades of muck over cleverly vertical stones for drainage, all taken out -- and where it's going. Truly a Herculean task, Martijn, I felt like singing a hallelujah chorus when the first wheelbarrow full of clean gravel went in. Your chicken ladies are delightful. I dream of your planting sunflowers for their seedy beauty needs. The black speckled one seems like the leader of the pack. Will you be naming them?
Hi Martin, after the gravel sub base, you need to put a layer of sand over the top and then lay a damp proof membrane over the top before you lay the insulation and concrete slab. Lap the plastic membrane up the walls so that the concrete is then kept dry.

Be careful with wood shavings and chicks you're raising away from adult chickens. They don't know better and get poisoned eating the shavings. If you notice they're falling over and can't walk right they're eating shavings. Just pull them off and they get well within a day.
Welcome home, ladies. ❤ They've got a super place to live and a kind and patient "padrone". You work so hard, Martijn. I hope you are happy with the progress you are making.
The chickens are a fantastic addition if looking to have a sustainable food source. If you love eggs then you're all set. At their peak of laying you can expect from 4 hens around 1.5 to 2 dozen + eggs a week minimum. I used to have chickens and miss having them, they were more pets than food for me. I never killed any for meat just harvested eggs. I let them live their lives until a predator got them or died of "natural" causes and then i would put their bodies out in the woods for other natures wonders to dine, thrive and survive upon. My youngest daughter still raises and cares for chickens in a coop that I built almost a quarter century ago now and it brings a smile to my face to see them.
Thanks for sharing...I look forward every week to the next episode...husband thinks I'm nuts watching such a blokes programme haha!! Can't wait to see the end product...we done so far ... see you next week
At 22:51 in the video, it looks like heaven to me. Sunshine and mist and trees radiating GREEN GROWTH and life in abundance. Thank you for sharing something that shows there is still goodness and normalcy somewhere in the world. It's not so nice where I am, but at least it is SOME where!
Another great video. Greetings from Thailand 🇹🇭. As a pet chicken keeper, 36 and counting, be aware that wolves, dogs, weasels, raccoons, foxes, hawks, eagles, and even snakes, etc. love chicken dinners . Predator proofing is a must, air and ground. Raccoons can open doors with simple latches and even carabiners. You have a stone floor in the coop which is great, but even then I would bury about two feet of fencing around the coop and run. Cheers, they’re beautiful.
I like that two of Martijn's hens ( or pullets I should say as they are young ones) have cuckoo pattern plumage ( blurred bars of dark grey and smoky white) while you keep hearing real cuckoos calling in the background !
it will take about 2 weeks for the chickens to feel like home in the coop, and before you let them free range i've read you have to keep them inside the coop for those 2 weeks. then they will return when it's bedtime :) hope this helps! there's also compost that the chickens can help with, tons of youtube videos on this too
I hate when the video ends! The cabin is looking awesome all because of your hard but satisfying work. The reward will be great! The chicken coup is just so perfect even you can fit in it lol. As for the chickens they have a great daddy!👍❤🐓
Hello Martijn, The chickens are adorable💚♥️💙 I have a suggestion that I have seen other youtubers do for their birds and that is putting straw on the floor and in nesting boxes for more comfort. Then when you clean it out you can use the fertilized straw as compost for your garden. You'ld have to research how to do compost. This is just how I've seen others take care of their chickens. Not criticizing!!!! Have a wonderful week!!! ❤
♥️.. I love everything that I see that you do ..your movements are intentional, no hasty actions ..that I love ! I find it so peaceful and serene..😊💕🇺🇸
I could watch you work for hours! Is your back not killing you? You live in the most peacefully place and I am green with envy, thank you for giving this old lady something to dream about!
Dear Martijn good luck with your chickens you’ve made them a lovely home. Just a thought though maybe make the doors/openings more secure as foxes could bang on the door and maybe manage to dislodge your lock. It would be horrible if that were to happen. Thanks for showing us your hard work, well done.
I SOOO look forward to Mondays now, when I get home from work to watch this is bliss! Thank you Martijn ... I love the chooks! It makes me realize how much I miss having chooks. They will take awhile to settle in and would probably love some mulch on the floor of the hen run.. throw your scraps in too and some hand fulls of seed like sunflower and they will have that churned into top grade compost in no time! not too mention all the bugs and worms that will supplement their diet and enrich your eggs .. lovely to watch happy chooks .. very entertaining ❤🥰
Welcome to the chicken!🐓 Be careful when they go outside. Use a sound or whistle to let them know when it’s time to go back home. (My grandpa did that!) Congratulations for the amazing work you are doing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Enjoy the green color of the wood. It will change fast! Doei! 🙋🏼♀️
It’s amazing how different the landscape looks from week to week. Simply beautiful. Also the work you’re doing with all the projects seem to be moving very quickly. I have to also mention the chickens…they are not pets of course, but I think they are doing well and they seem to have taken well to their new home (which is spectacular) quite nicely. You are making a good life for yourself even through difficult times you take each day and work through it well. God continue to bless you Martjin.

Straw will work too for their nesting boxes ????🐓🥚
Be careful, mirrors can start fire if the sunlight reflects of it.
Be careful with wood shavings and chicks you're raising away from adult chickens. They don't know better and get poisoned eating the shavings.
If you notice they're falling over and can't walk right they're eating shavings. Just pull them off and they get well within a day.
Don’t forget the grit for the chickens’ gizzards….they cannot grind their food without it!!.
I live in Dubai (architect & teacher) and loved your podcast recently. I watch your videos religiously every week, bravo to your wonderful life style.
He did a podcast? Link please?
At 22:51 in the video, it looks like heaven to me. Sunshine and mist and trees radiating GREEN GROWTH and life in abundance. Thank you for sharing something that shows there is still goodness and normalcy somewhere in the world. It's not so nice where I am, but at least it is SOME where!
People don't realize the work it takes. We do.
I’m so happy you finally got your chickens….hope you’ll name them. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful home. See you next Sunday.
Cheers, they’re beautiful.
racoouns are not to be counted as predator not in this part of the world at least
he did that already in an earlier video actually, the underground fencing
Yes, i was thinking of a 5' electrified fence around there, and a more raccoon and fox proof latch
@@jwest8330 yikes, I missed that. Gives me a reason to go back and re-watch .
Don't forget. If the chickens eat snakes, or other creepers around then feeding them certain chicken food to flush that out wouldn't be a bad idea.
I like that two of Martijn's hens ( or pullets I should say as they are young ones) have cuckoo pattern plumage ( blurred bars of dark grey and smoky white) while you keep hearing real cuckoos calling in the background !
Martijn talking to his chickens is so wholesome and adorable 😄😄
I agree 100 percent✨🌟⭐
These are hens not chickens.
Sooo adorable!!!
@@Hamishtarah Thanks for taking some of your valuable time to correct my English as a non-native speaker. Many blessings and have a great day!
@@Hamishtarah hens are chickens, just female ones
it will take about 2 weeks for the chickens to feel like home in the coop, and before you let them free range i've read you have to keep them inside the coop for those 2 weeks. then they will return when it's bedtime :) hope this helps! there's also compost that the chickens can help with, tons of youtube videos on this too
Straw will help to make the nesting boxes complete ? 🐓🥚
@@SueB369 plus always clean water- you don't want them to get sick
Never thought 4chickens could lighten up my life as much.
That end drone view is just amazing. Thank you.
This work is amazing. And the chickens are living in a beautiful mansion.
I hate when the video ends! The cabin is looking awesome all because of your hard but satisfying work. The reward will be great!
The chicken coup is just so perfect even you can fit in it lol.
As for the chickens they have a great daddy!👍❤🐓
Wonderful to see rain considering the terrible drought situation in the North of italy
I absolutely love the song❤
The video made me cry happy tears.❤
Cheers
Hello Martijn, The chickens are adorable💚♥️💙 I have a suggestion that I have seen other youtubers do for their birds and that is putting straw on the floor and in nesting boxes for more comfort. Then when you clean it out you can use the fertilized straw as compost for your garden. You'ld have to research how to do compost. This is just how I've seen others take care of their chickens. Not criticizing!!!! Have a wonderful week!!! ❤
I love how curious the chickens are, they’re running towards you when you come to them with new stuff to check it out!😍
♥️.. I love everything that I see that you do ..your movements are intentional, no hasty actions ..that I love ! I find it so peaceful and serene..😊💕🇺🇸
This has become my sanctuary, my peaceful place.
The photo of you holding the white chicken was worth a thousand words! Priceless…thanks for sharing so much of your life with us.
How true! I felt the happiness.
Martín! Felicitaciones por tus gallinas!
I'm watching episode 65 in April 2024, Started in March with the first one! My favorite episode! The chickens are home!
Doei! 🙋🏼♀️
Hi Martijn , you place is beautiful and Magical... THANKS 🙏⭐
Man, I remember when you made your workbench. It’s been a long time and you’ve come a long way! Long way still to go and I’m here for all of it.
Truly are enjoying watching you r progress.
As for the washroom, we save our used coffee grinds and pour them down into the hole.
Keep inspiring us 🇨🇦
It’s amazing how different the landscape looks from week to week.
Hello, chickens!
It is interesting how gentle and generous Mr. Martijn is to his chickens.
I mean, way back when I was at home, we just let our chickens be. 😅
The flowers planted are looking pretty! Imagine if they were planted with a landscaper's design!
All of the different green colors are magnificent! Thank you for another beautiful look at the Italian Alps!
Thanks Martijn. Great drone shots, tough work, lovely chicken, I love their sounds. The way you are able to focus on your goal is a great inspiration for me. Thanks again for sharing.
Love the Rain sounds !
And the gravel being shoveled!
انتظر بفارغ من الصبر حلقة اليوم

How exciting to have hens. Thanks for the diagrams what you are doing with the cabin.

The chickens peeking out the window! So fun to see you have friends there with you.
All the details of every project you do are interesting to watch! Thank you for sharing!
