  • ATRO offers a full line of long-lasting polyurethane replacement parts for the Mack Camelback suspension system. We made this video to show you key points in identifying these suspensions, along with details for maintenance, and specs for ATRO parts.
The Mack Camelback suspension is easily identified by the inverted spring stack. Non-rebushable sealed rods are very common on Mack for the larger rods and the smaller-eyed rods are frequently non-rebushable rubber with the actual eye of the rod crimped.
An important maintenance note is that you should not mix ATRO pads with any other manufacturers' pads, not left and right, nor top and bottom. The load pads on the Camelback, also known as Mack pads, insulator pads, and elephant's feet, typically have high rebound properties, whether the OE rubber pads or other poly pads. However, ATRO is the only manufacturer to use a low-rebound no-bounce material. This is significant because this suspension is designed with an 8-10 pound rubber block, basically sitting top and bottom at the end of the spring.
The bottom of the spring stack is called a T-Leaf, due to the shape of the end of the spring. Near the end of this leaf, there is a hole in the spring and it's there to locate the pads properly. The round nub on the steel plate or the pad loosely fits in the hole with one pad on top of the spring and one on the bottom.
The pads are housed within a metal box and two insulator spacer blocks are placed left and right between the two pads to control conical motion. The spring flexes, while at the same time, the load pads bounce. Rubber, or other poly pads, in contrast, transfer that shock along the length of the spring assembly and into the frame and the cab, causing the vehicle to "ride like a Mack."
Rubber pads, because of their high rebound properties, can cause a rough ride, cab damage, and T-Leaf breakage. ATRO's polyurethane, in this instance, acts as a shock absorber. As the vehicle hits a bump or a pothole, the shock coming up through the axle is kept isolated within the pad. The use of ATRO's pads will smooth out the ride considerably and dramatically reduce cap damage, driver complaints, and T-Leaf problems. While this is one product where the benefits are immediately apparent, ATRO's extended life versus the OE rubber pad is also a primary benefit.
