I saw the movie at the drive in when I was seven years old. Loved it then and I love it now. And when I was in ROTC and it was time to pick a branch, I picked armor, based on that movie and the movie Patton. Spent four years four wheel driving, blowing things up and thinking I was Oddball. Eastwood's film 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' is based on a book written by Forrest Carter in 1972 _The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales._ Forrest Carter was not his real name. His real name was Asa Earl Carter:
Asa Earl Carter (September 4, 1925 - June 7, 1979) was a 1950s segregationist political activist, Ku Klux Klan organizer, and later Western novelist. He co-wrote George Wallace's well-known pro-segregation line of 1963, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever", and ran in the Democratic primary for governor of Alabama on a white supremacist ticket. Years later, under the pseudonym of supposedly Cherokee writer Forrest Carter, he wrote The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (1972), a Western novel that led to a 1976 film - The Oulaw Josey Wales - featuring Clint Eastwood that was adopted into the National Film Registry, and The Education of Little Tree (1976), a best-selling, award-winning book which was marketed as a memoir but which turned out to be fiction.
In 1976, following the success of The Rebel Outlaw and its film adaptation The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), The New York Times revealed Forrest Carter was actually Asa Carter.[1] His background became national news again in 1991 after his purported memoir, The Education of Little Tree (1976), was re-issued in paperback, topped the Times paperback best-seller lists (both non-fiction and fiction), and won the American Booksellers Book of the Year (ABBY) award. In the memoir Carter claimed to be Cherokee and/or of Cherokee descent but this has been shown to be a complete fabrication.
Prior to his literary career as "Forrest", Carter was politically active for years in Alabama as an opponent of the civil rights movement. In the mid 1950s, he had a syndicated segregationist radio show, and worked as a speech writer for segregationist Governor George Wallace of Alabama. He also founded the North Alabama Citizens Council (NACC), an independent offshoot of the White Citizens' Council movement formed by Carter when the White Citizens' Council tried to moderate Carter's antisemitism. He also formed the militant and violent Ku Klux Klan group known as the Original Ku Klux Klan of the Confederacy, and started a monthly publication titled The Southerner which spread white supremacist and anti-communist rhetoric.

I don't know how you determined what a hit was and what isn't. But several of these so-called hits or semi-hits actually lost money with their theatrical release box office returns. For example, Kelly's Heroes jumped right out at me when you called it semi-hit, when it wasn't one. That movie had a production budget for $4 million. That $5 million is far from making back the production money to put the film in the black. The studios never receive 100% of the ticket revenue, which that $5 million is. Most of the movie rental paid by theaters is less than half the ticket sales numbers. And the production budget (in this case $4 million) does not include the distribution budget (marketing, prints, etc..). That has to be paid down with what was actually taken in. For distribution cost and being conservate add another million. Best way to get a general idea of what a movie must make in overall ticket sales to see a chance pf profitability is to multiply the production cost by 2 (nowadays it is 2.5 as general rule). This just gives the basic value (just round about area, not exact science) of the overall revenue the must be reached to allow for distribution and production companies to make their money back.
Of course, over time Kelly's Heroes has made a made more money than the box office revenue and that definitely put the movie in black years later. It made more revenue from video sales and TV viewing. But then again, I would wager (using that same expectation of additional revenue coming years later) almost every one of the movies here with a "flop" status would also made a profit later on, thanks to these additional revenue streams.
