  • Can the UK Type 45 Destroyer outperform U.S. Navy destroyers? The Type 45, one of the UK’s most advanced warships, is receiving significant upgrades to its Sea Viper air defense system. With a £400 million investment, the destroyer now boasts smarter missiles, an enhanced Aster 30 warhead, and advanced radar and command systems. These updates ensure the Type 45 remains a top-tier vessel against modern threats, but will it surpass the capabilities of the U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers? Watch to find out!

The Royal navy doesn’t have a quality problem it has a quantity problem. 6 destroyers to the USA’s 70+, China’s 50+, and Japan’s 42+ makes the Royal Navy a very quality coastal defense flotilla.

It's rather pathetic when you think about it, and it's slowly getting worse. When war/conflict does break out, we'll be struggling to maintain, let alone fight or support

I think Royal Navy has QUALITY problem rather than Quantity problem...... for Example first ship HMS Daring of Type 45 class destroyer has spent more time in Maintenance rather than in Active service.
HMS DARING is out of service (in Maintenance) since 2017. It means Unavailable for service for almost 7 and half years.
Also both Aircraft carriers of Royal Navy are problematic, mostly unavailable for service.

The type 45s are underestimated ships, I just don't think ppl quite realise just how good these ships are!!! Quoted as the best air defence destroyers in the world by ppl what actually know what their on about!!! Great ship, its samson radar system is what truly makes it so good & the info at the end is yrs old because all 6 ships had there gas turbine & power unit system all replaced & got upgraded at the same time. They've already announced & started upgrading the vls systems & adding an extra 36 or 48 more & anti ballistic missile defence systems with upgrads to the samson radar

Just for your information...... The first ship of "Type 45 destroyer" "HMS DARING" is out of service for almost 7 years......HMS DARING has spent more time in maintenance rather than in service.
Same tradgedy is following both Aircraft carriers of UK.

You're wrong, they're not getting an extra anti ballistic missile

They were intended as dedicated AAW destroyers for the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. In this role they are reportedly excellent. But they do not have the surface warfare or other multirole capabilites that the Arleigh Burke destroyers have.

Protecting carriers is a full time job in and of itself and as you said...they're excellent at that. I just saw where the Agamemnon has left Barrow. The RN is looking stronger every day.

The type 45s are fine ships...they don't need to "outperform" the Arliegh Burkes. They only need to outperform the Russians. The Royal navy is getting good traction to be back on par with where it should be. The RAF on the other hand needs desperate attention. The Army needs to be cut back and more specialized in my opinion as there's only so much money due to your national healthcare system.
