I got screamed at in a whole with my division but one on one, not once did i ever get singled out. So i have a feeling my age and my previous job had something to do with it. I know it sounds bizarre but i never got close to the singled out punishments the younger guys got. I definitely noticed it fully when they nominated me for an recruit award and while walking across the training command he talked to me like we were having a casual conversation walking down the street. I mean he was hard on us and i respected him and his rank to the fullest but mannn did he make my boot experience a cake walk compared to others.
They did that because they knew you were a grown up and wanted to be there. When I went through basic in 1990 I had a college degree and that was pretty unusual. Once they saw I could hang they mostly left me alone.

Musicians are an exception to policy, since you can come out of high school (as long as you pass your asvab (32) and interview. Once the interview is done in the enlistment process you will come in the rank E-4, if you are extremly good in the interview you could be considered to join the whitehouse band (not decided by Applicant but by interviewers) and come in as E-6

Hmmm, I can do more about my general routines and what not! I do have a video on my enlistment process but maybe I can talk about how I would approach things now. 😁

Bands that are part of a division, 1st armored division, 101st airborne division etc. Although, it is super rare that I’ve heard of any bands actively being in deployment rotations. My band has only recently sent buglers or 2 month rotations but our last one came back last year during COVID.
@@AbbyWeaver oh my 😂 yes - totally meant “deployable”. I passed a prescreen and currently taking steps to take a live audition. My wife isn’t keen on me signing the dotted line if there’s a strong chance of deployment. This helps though!

I am practicing for my trumpet video submission right now, I think I will submit the video in january. I was just wondering about something you said in the video: that you were not in love with your job right now and that you seemed to dislike the moving around. Is that the main reason you aren't going to stay for a while? I ask because I personally want to join so that I can travel as much as possible. I actually enjoy moving. Of course I am not married, that must be hectic to deal with when on the move so much. Do you think the army band life would be better suited to someone like me who likes moving around, isn't in any commited relationship, not concerned with promotion or money, and just wants to eat, sleep, and play trumpet without the stresses of freelancing?
Sounds like the moving around won’t be a problem for you! Long story short, I was told by my band liaison “your job is to be a musician” and that’s just not true. I have a ton of extra duties that have to get done before making music. Just today, I had a great warm up before formation, planned to dive into excerpts right after formation but was instead tagged to go clean weapons.
As a musician in the United States Army do you need a fitness test? Are Musicians deployed in combat? I was reading about Marines that every Marine is a riflemen.
Every Army musician goes through Basic Combat Training like other jobs in the Army. We have to regularly qualify on our weapons and take the Army Combat Fitness Test.
“Every Marine is a rifleman” is more a motto than a personnel management policy. In extreme cases during a war, every Marine is expected to be able to fight to defend themselves, and the location where they happen to be. The Marines don’t plan on using the band to routinely conduct combat operations.
I took one audition for the Navy Fleet bands and damn, they are hyping those vacancies up like they are premier band spots (when it's the same pay as I make now). 🤷🏻♀️ Soooo many powerhouses turned out for that audition but it was a great experience. Hindsight is 20/20, I do wish I had taken a few more auditions before landing on the Army but I felt pressure to have a job right out of my masters.

I was never sure how Navy Fleet exactly worked until I finally tried to apply last year pre pandemic, so of course that screwed up everything 😅😅😅 I know you say here you have no full 20 ambitions, but any Premiere ambitions? I can’t imagine you haven’t seen the Navy Band DC has a tuba vacancy 😉 And just a sidenote , watching more of your videos, I’m pretty sure we have the same brain…we both prefer more efficient ways to do things, not because because we’re lazy because we’re intelligent types who like to “work smarter, not harder” 😆 So of course, we choose a military career! Perfect 😂
I’m in the process of really finding a balance between all the extra duties I have and also practicing and working out like I want! Currently getting to work an hour and a half before formation to have uninterrupted fundamentals time. 😅 More to come on any premier auditions, just trying to be the best I can be right now. 😁 Off to warm up! 💙

If a specialist is enlisted rather than commissioned that is very surprising given that you have a postgraduate degree.

Entry as E-4, is based on having a 4 year degree rather than an acquired skill, in the overwhelming majority of cases.
