Love Parker's quote (and fuller message) and your contextualization of it. The importance of cultivating an individual, and personally AUTHENTIC, voice on the instrument can never be overstated.

Wise words! Jazz is never having to say you're sorry.

That is really great. I love to do my own improvisation all the time. Standards are fine but I love to express myself.

Thanks Tito for sharing this Bird's quote that I didn't know. Very inspiring for a trumpet beginner like me !

Tito, this was amazing. And thank you for that insight into Bird's interview. Love the full context of the original quote.
You don't need permission to be yourself. Love this.

What most people don't know is that Bird became addicted to opiates because he was in a terrible car accident as a teenager and the Doctor prescribed morphine to deal with pain. He recovered from the accident but not from the morphine. This is not unlike the current addiction crisis in he U.S. The tragedy is that Bird was so influential that people thought that his addiction must have contributed to his ability. As you stated, by all accounts he was horrified by this . He hated being an addict.
