    Here’s how I use all 12 notes over a Dominant 7 chord. The 3 and b7, the tritone, defines the chord. The 1-3-5-b7 are the chord tones, safest to land on. Then b3 always only resolves upwards into the 3. Then 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7 would be Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale; these 9 notes are “inside”. Finally b2-b6-7 can be used in chromatic lines that resolve. - Always know both the letter name and the interval name of the note you’re playing (example: I’m on G# the 3rd of this E7 chord). Be able to use all 12 notes over any Dominant 7 chord.

      My setup is pretty natural, it just feels comfortable to me based on my underlying teeth structure. You can experiment, but I would say use the setup that allows you to play with a clear, pure sound in all registers, and it shouldn't matter if it looks like mine or anybody else's. Terell Stafford plays very off center, and he is one of the greatest in the world.

    Brilliant, Tito!!! The concepts that you covered in this video resonated so deeply for me. These are the concepts that I recently began to incorporate into my routines. Granted, I’m still in the early stages, but your words certainly act to reinforce the mindsets that I’m developing. They align perfectly with what one of my teachers has been telling me. The most important part, for me, is the idea of getting ideas into the subconscious, so they can emerge in the flow! BIG THANKS! 🙏

    • @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605
      @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tomhellmuth8156 It simply means creating a flat surface using the facial muscles surrounding the chin area. This prevents a pocket of air being produced in the chin area when playing, and increases stability in the embouchure.

  • @paulsiwy6097
    @paulsiwy6097 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks Tito. This is a game changer for me. I knew about using the Blues Scale but had to write it down and then think about the fingering. Your approach feels more natural because I no longer get caught up in the weeds of thinking notes and chords. I just get comfortable with playing the sound using the correct fingering first and then it becomes intuitive so I no longer think what notes they are but rather what each fingering is associated with each sound. This may not be a good explanation but simply put, I now know what my pallet of notes are by feel and ear. Now I just need to practice this in different scales so I get comfortable playing them.

    I’ve never had a trumpet lesson but I bought a trumpet. I sound horrible when I blow into the trumpet. It sounds like a balloon that’s deflating. What are the very first steps I need to know in order to make a clean sound of a note. Also how do I know what notes I’m playing because I’m not hearing notes just a terrible sound.

    • @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605
      @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@annalehman763 It sounds like you’re blowing too forcefully. It shouldn’t feel like you’re blowing out candles on your birthday cake, but instead, imagine having one candle a foot away from your mouth and you’re trying to make it flicker WITHOUT blowing it out. Then try buzzing a note on your mouthpiece, Use te 3 F’s so the buzzing part of the lips are relaxed not tense. Once you can get a nice even buzz on the mouthpiece, then add the trumpet. The other thing is you must hear the note you want to play. The first two notes trumpet players learn are low C and middle G, both open fingerings. Try singing the notes before you play them. Hope this helps.

I've been back at it consistently for 8 weeks now ... after watching and listening to you here ... first time ever double G ... wasn't held long or very loud but clear and on pitch ... still a very long way to go to be able to consistently reproduce and control anything above a D but it's a decent start. Having watched listened and experimented, I discovered that I already naturally form the tongue arch beginning on E at top of the staff ... (for me the key is) to bring my bottom lip up incrementally to close the aperture ... sounds so simple yet without your help I would not likely have been inspired ... thanks so much Tito!

    as a guitar player, I can assure you that most guitarists think they know the arpeggios but they can't identify where the 3rd the fifth and the seventh are. When improvising jazz most guitarists think of the mode for each chord instead of emphasising on the chord tone. there are very few jazz guitar teachers tell their students to use chord tone when landing on the down beat or 1st beat and 3rd beat.

      @@OrganicFaithFactory Through my college experience, I have found what you’ve said to be very accurate. • @OrganicFaithFactory

      @@jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605 That would help the guitar student greatly! I first discover how to improvise when I learn the walking bass. Walking bass is the best way to help a jazz guitar student to improvise with chord tone. Challenge a jazz guitarist now to improvise a simple 251 progression but only land on the 3rd and the 7th on the 1 and 4 beat and see if they can! Also ask them to play an arpeggio and ask them where are the chord tones and where are tension notes or the chord tone extension notes! Many jazz guitarist don't know two things: First. They don't focus more to the rhythm like and put the chord tone to the down beats or 1 and 3. Second. They know all the arpeggio in all keys! But they don't know where the root, 3rd, fifth, seventh are! There is a guitarist that teach just that is Adam Smale from Jazz Rocks with Adam Channel Also similar concept from Chad LB channel How To Improvise Melodically where he teach the same concept Thanks hope this help
