Wish you the best and thank you for your contents!
super and high impact video Tito! clear and concise. I'm pretty old ... but also pretty new to improv yet I have this thing inside my head where when listening to the backing track I can hear improv rhythm(s) and phrasing ... now, thanks to you, with your lesson here I can add the proper notes across registers to the rhythms in my head ... too much fun! ... have you or will you create next lesson or a series? I recall in this video that you mentioned chord change improv, I think that's how you said it. My ultimate goal is to be able to hear a chord and instinctively know the notes that fit the chord ... I assume that's pretty advanced but it's a worthy goal IMO, thanks again, really appreciate and enjoy all of your video productions!
Thousands of likes. I've been struggling to begin improvising for years now and never been able to take the first step. I felt the thing, and could improvise freely for the first time ever. The logic behind is brilliant. Thank you very much Tito.
I was just struggling with my low c and below, notes where often fluttery but notes above where solid (I can play to top d in the staff, beginer trumpet player). So embouchure being too loose below the staff might exactly be one major reason for this. Thank you!
Thanks!
THIS GUY IS MY GOAT. IM IN 8TH GRADE AND NOW I CAN PLAY LIKE DOUBLE Bs EASILY THANK YOU
Gracias...
This is pure gold! I needed this in the 90's, haha
Great stuff.
Well this is gold, I just found this today ! Tito was my teacher in Chicago, for a brief time. I can say he was the best teacher. My biggest impediment was over blowing. Man, free lessons! !
Holy smokes look what I found this thanksgiving morning.. my teacher from the past . This is gold, although I don’t play the trumpet as a performer, I still “ mess around here at home . I’m darn near 70 yrs old. Thank you Tito . Sam Garcia
@@Bluewave147 Hey Sam, great to hear from you! I’m down in TX now near the San Antonio - Austin area now, moved my family down last year. Hope you’re doing great, brother! 🙏🏽👊🏽🎺
I love it. Its such a joy to play with my son as well!
Hahaha! Should've broken one more octave out! 😂
Tito, I'm 72, been a jazz piano player for years. I fell in love with the horn in 1970 NY when I was at Music & Art HS...But I did the piano. Now, at 72, I'm a month into playing horn daily at least a half an hour or an hour. I can reach the third G. Not perfectly but it's there...low G, middle G, next G. A is possible but a squeek. I am doing my due diligence to not push it. I am a disciplined student and I learn best with books. Hard to find. So I'm doing long tones, slurring, Clarke...super slow, and sight reading. I'm reading sheet music impro off of the standards. Very slow and hard, but it's coming. I can play Side by Side and sound good. Another question: I only have a Jupiter 416 pocket horn. Should I buy a regular trumpet? I really only have about $200. What do you suggest? Much appreciated. Hey, bravo on the surgery. I do 16/8 fasting and have used that to maintain my perfect weight. Keep up the good work. Blessings, hermano mio.
Thank you very much for this lesson !
Awesome video, Tito! Do you ever do fish face flexes?
@@VictorGarcia-mc7pj I’ve started after listening to Adam Rapa talk about it!
Very helpful thank you
Does anyone have about 3 core practice routines that they have used to develop range and endurance.
“Isn’t that stealing?!” Tito: “Yes. Yes, it is.😌” You’re the best bro😂
Brilliant video, bro! Super logical and easy to follow along with🏆🎶❤️
First time improvising. Loved it. Thanks Tito. Off to practice some more.
Loved playing with you this morning here🤩🔥🎶🎺 Grateful for this gift, mi hermano!
@@VictorGarcia-mc7pj Gracias hermano! 🙏🏽😉
Beautifully and eloquently put! Hear here🗣️👂🙌
Great information and tips Tito!
Thanks, Tito! I haven’t reached any new notes yet, but based on the information in this video, and the one on tongue position, I’m reaching my upper register with more ease.
THANKS!! TITO!! YOU'VE DEFINITELY! HELPED ME FIGURE OUT HOW TO PLAY HIGH NOTES ON MY TRUMPET! YOUR AN EXCELLENT TEACHER!!!🎺👍
Thank you 1000 times for this great content 🙏
Great lesson Tito, thank you!
brand new player here, it sure is fun trying all the new Technics
Very enlightening and eye opening- I’m a 80 year old trumpet player kinda late but I gained a rudimentary understanding of his discussion which can help my soloing. Many thanks.
Friend: Please allow me to give you a thought on improvising that has been applied through my 60 year career of playing trumpet in various settings. I believe jazz has lost popularity for a lot of listeners because it has become too abstract . What started as popular music for the masses is now in the majority of musicians based upon musical theory. My advice: make your rides simple, forget theory and add “hooks” that get the listener’s attention. Hooks are what draws the listener into your performance. They are what sells records and what makes artists popular. When soloing on a song, try to envision in your mind’s ear what your next phrase will be ,which can be challenging. As with everything in music, practice will improve your performance.
Thank you for all this wonderful and helpful content 🙏🙏🙏
Bello!!! ❤
Haha. Right on, Tito!
Super helpful, thanks Tito! Have been struggling with exactly this issue of bringing good technical habits into the higher brainload activity of improvising, this is v helpful guidance - gracias!
Here’s how I use all 12 notes over a Dominant 7 chord. The 3 and b7, the tritone, defines the chord. The 1-3-5-b7 are the chord tones, safest to land on. Then b3 always only resolves upwards into the 3. Then 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7 would be Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale; these 9 notes are “inside”. Finally b2-b6-7 can be used in chromatic lines that resolve. - Always know both the letter name and the interval name of the note you’re playing (example: I’m on G# the 3rd of this E7 chord). Be able to use all 12 notes over any Dominant 7 chord.
I have found the same things! Excellent!
Excellent! And I'm a former professional trumpet player.
You start learning to improvise by listening to Louis Armstrong recordings for four hours a day !!
Hi Tito. Thanks for the lesson . It appears that you play slightly off centre? I've recently tried doing this which initially had some surprisingly good results. If I'm correct about where your mouthpiece sits, was it always like this or did you intentionally make that change? Many thanks Nick
My setup is pretty natural, it just feels comfortable to me based on my underlying teeth structure. You can experiment, but I would say use the setup that allows you to play with a clear, pure sound in all registers, and it shouldn't matter if it looks like mine or anybody else's. Terell Stafford plays very off center, and he is one of the greatest in the world.
Brilliant, Tito!!! The concepts that you covered in this video resonated so deeply for me. These are the concepts that I recently began to incorporate into my routines. Granted, I’m still in the early stages, but your words certainly act to reinforce the mindsets that I’m developing. They align perfectly with what one of my teachers has been telling me. The most important part, for me, is the idea of getting ideas into the subconscious, so they can emerge in the flow! BIG THANKS! 🙏
outstanding . hope you do more of these . so very helpful
outstanding.. my teacher 55 years ago started every lesson with long tones on g , bored me stupid but it worked . great lesson
My teacher laughingly refers to the finger ring as "the octave key".
Thanks for a great video. One question... Can someone explain what is meant by "flat chin?" I guess that it must be obvious, but I just am not sure what it means. Thanks!
@@tomhellmuth8156 It simply means creating a flat surface using the facial muscles surrounding the chin area. This prevents a pocket of air being produced in the chin area when playing, and increases stability in the embouchure.
Thanks! Makes sense. @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605
Outstanding idea of using a long tone approach to improvising. Really like the idea of keeping the mind and body in a relaxed state. Definitely trying this method.
I believe, after listening to the entire video, has to do with Authors 3rd point. Technical understanding of repetitive patterns and jazz theoretical concepts.
At about 1:21 in this TH-cam video is a real cool lick. What do you practice for that kind of lick?
Thanks Tito. This is a game changer for me. I knew about using the Blues Scale but had to write it down and then think about the fingering. Your approach feels more natural because I no longer get caught up in the weeds of thinking notes and chords. I just get comfortable with playing the sound using the correct fingering first and then it becomes intuitive so I no longer think what notes they are but rather what each fingering is associated with each sound. This may not be a good explanation but simply put, I now know what my pallet of notes are by feel and ear. Now I just need to practice this in different scales so I get comfortable playing them.
@@paulsiwy6097 I love how you explained that!
did you transcribe a lot of Woody Shaw?
