  • Recorded 8 Jan 2024. This video aims to give an honest and balanced view of the Insta360 Ace Pro from a normal users perspective. Most of my comments apply to its use underwater as a scuba diver over the past 6 weeks. This has been done independently and is not sponsored or supported by any company.

    I have been using my Ace Pro for about a month here in the PHILIPPINES and quite happy with it. One thing I like about Insta360 is that they come out with updates for their cameras quite frequently.

    Thank you so much for the review! I’ve been looking at reviews of this camera for the third day now and this is exactly the kind of review I needed - from a real user who uses the camera for scuba diving. Thank you!

      Pleasure! As you can well see I’m not a reviewer. But I just thought I’d put a ‘normal’ perspective on a bit of kit that has attracted all sorts of opinions. I may do similar from time to time for other gear but not as a regular thing, only if I think my ideas may be useful to people.

    As a diver with similar use patterns, this was very helpful. Thanks!

    Great video and I love the feedback from a regular diver! I usually use my GoPro Hero 11 as a backup video camera, mounted on my larger Ikelite housing. I got the Ace Pro for Christmas and have yet to take it on a dive trip. But I am excited to try it, as I never have been very happy with the GoPro's footage underwater, especially at depths with lower light. I also agree, I would love to see HDR on 4k 60p, but not sure the camera has the processing power for it. Other features I would like are a 10bit flat profile on all frame rates and a dome port option for the housing.

    Great review. I've just gotten into snorkelling and I'm looking at this camera. There are so many on the market to choose from and it gets overwhelming. I'm not into editing videos so i really like how this does some editing for you.

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’m glad this was helpful. For snorkelling you can’t go wrong with any of the major brands to be honest (Insta360, GoPro, DJI Osmo) as you’ll tend to have a lot of light at those depths. I find that the way the Insta360 renders colours and also the way it is to use suits me better, but all these cameras are good options for you. Hope you have fun with whatever camera you choose.

      Thanks! I would not normally do something like this but I think the reviews of this camera are so conflicting that a non-hyped / real life experience was a useful contribution. I also hope #insta360 take note of my software update suggestions 😊

      @@bottom_time Yah, there's a list for next firmware update for sure, nothing life threatening lol but this is the norm for any newly launched camera.

    This is - by far - THE best review of the Insta360 Ace Pro that I have watched. Mate - I tip my hat. My feeling of ALL the other “reviews” has been exactly as you point out: either OVERLY positive (payed positive) or “I have a stick up my ass against Insta).
    I am Padi Pro working in Palm Beach County diving 2 to 5 days a week. Have used GoPro’s since they came out but my “newest” is the Hero10 with a Hero8 as my backup…have used my IPhone in housings the past 2 years as my main setup….BUT have wrecked every single housing on the market. The ones with electronics in them end up getting seawater in and frying the electronics (Sealife and Kraken). The ONLY one that held up more than a year was the DiveVolk Seatouch 4 Max…but eventually the touchscreen membrane also punctured and leaked the gel into the housing.

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Which outfit do you work for? I felt there were some good options around Palm Beach and nearby (eg Riviera etc).
      I should point out that my aim was not to criticise the professional online reviewers. I enjoy watching their opinions. But I thought, especially in this case where the reviews were so polarised, that I wanted to put something out there that represents how a normal regular user would use the camera and perceive its strengths and weaknesses. I actually admire how gear reviewers can put together such good info when they get so much gear thrown at them and have to pump out videos after just a few uses. My aim was simply to offer an alternative perspective based on my experience.

    Awesome review! I just have a question, what about the 40mp still photos underwater? Does the WB underwater color correction also works on photo mode?

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve never used the Ace Pro for still photography apart from taking stills from my videos. My guess is the 40MP would be very grainy and not good with low light due to the way they achieve that resolution. I also don’t know but doubt that AwuaVision 2.0 would be enabled on stills it any photo editor that gives you multi-factor white balance correction will do the trick. Sorry I can’t be more help but I really only do video.

    Great review! Want to confirm do you use the diving mode (assume that is AquaVision), and if so, do you have any control over the settings?

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Aqwuavision 2.0 mode is not something that you set before going diving. Instead, in processing your clips it detects when you’ve been underwater and gives you the option to apply it. And yes you can control a couple of the settings of this filter. As I said in my video I tend only to use it rarely because I prefer the look of some of the other options. But it is very effective to filter out blue/green.

    Thanks ever so much for this great review. I am trying to figure out what is the best underwater selfie stick for diving in a marine environment. Any recommendations?

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your comment; the main thing I would recommend is that you want a short selfie stick or even just a handle. The longer a selfie stick is the more it will accentuate small movements and make your footage seem less smooth. I really only extend my selfie stick when I need to get my camera under a rock or somewhere tricky.

      @@bottom_time - Thanks ever so much again for this quick reply. I really hadn't thought of your point. I want to be able to use it from my boat as well, so I guess I need to look at for two.

    • @bottom_time

      The one I use is the Sandmarc Pole Compact. I think it goes from 10” retracted to 25” extended so it’s quite versatile. And also very rugged!

    Question from a noob: when using the Ace Pro dive housing, can I switch between photo and video modes underwater? Or is this a decision I need to make topside?

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You can! You can set presets that you toggle through using the side button and these can be video or photo mode presets.

    can you tell what settings are you using ? 4k 120 og what do you use ?

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use 4K/30 as I find having HDR on gives best results. This means I am compromised in slowing down the footage (and as I said in the video I hope they give us 4K/60 in an update). I have set up 4 diving presets for toggling with the side button. All are identical apart from white balance (one is on Auto, and the other 3 are on 4000K, 5000k and 6500k). I shoot in DeWarp, standard colour, low sharpening, no exposure compensation.

    Have you tried to use it without a dive case? How does it work?

    • @bottom_time
      @bottom_time  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not tried it underwater without a dive case as I always dive below 10 metres. However I have used it on land without a dive case including to film this video. The experience is very similar to GoPro on land with the 2 advantages of the flip up screen and better low light performance. I liked it (but again, 90% of my use is in a dive case).
