Nice job Tim! One comment on the subsoiler. If Ken could make a nice knife edge for the front of the shank, it would cut the sod and push the soil aside rather than ripping and tearing up the sod. Especially in a nice grassy yard! For unfinished soil, it wouldn't make any difference, but in your yard, it will not go back to the way it was. I know this from experience in my yard. But, we have a lot of yellow clay here, not that nice black topsoil you have in Indiana. Just a suggestion.

I made this myself out of a Heavy Hitch ripper a few years ago, for exactly the same purpose... ethernet out to the shed. My experience was the same as yours. Took 100% of the 1025R's power and all the weight I could get it on it. My neighbor installed the septic system, so I knew it was 36" below and couldn't hit if I tried. I did hit two mystery PVC pipes. Neither had any purpose we could determine. Maybe an old footing drain or old gutter drain. Neither flowed water from anywhere to anywhere. So filled in the hole and pretended I never saw them :)
Having been in the Army and hearing the word Howitzer I was expecting rounds to be fired. The “Howitzer” and the Heavy Hitch are impressive for such applications. Both units offer great alternatives for shallow bury. Blessings.
I made one of those with a Subsoiler from TS and a J-bend piece of 2" conduit. I used it to pull water line from the house to back of the property for a fish pond.
I helped with a similar cable run last summer, except we went thru an open woods. In order to ensure that we didn't run into issues we plowed the trench twice - first without cable and after we knew we had a clear path we followed the trench a second time with the conduit (actually we buried pvc pipe as conduit). It worked perfectly.

@@Mrbink01 Cat7 never really took off and has more or less been abandoned, it was never recognized by TIA/EIA as a standard. Cat6 would offer 5 Gbps, Cat6a would offer 10 Gbps, and Cat8 has support for higher speeds (future proofing). i'm assuming he won't be using GG45 or TERA connectors with the Cat7 which is what it was designed to use for higher performance applications, i'd guess with RJ45 connections (which aren't officially supported on Cat7) it likely won't perform any better than Cat6a. it will be fine but it's just an oddball and when you have something running underground and penetrating buildings it's probably better to have a widely adopted standard in general.

The cable layer is a pretty cool option for the Heavy Hitch. The Ripper is a handy tool as well.
It looks like you have a combination of Heavy Hitch components assembled to build that cable laying rig. It would be extremely helpful if you listed the individual components that make up the rig to include the cable spool. Many thanks!

My uncle ran the crew putting in fibre optics throughout Saskatchewan in the 1980s. The first large scale implementation of fibre optics in the world or so my understanding went. I think they had the plow down about 6 feet maybe 8 feet. When the ground was wet and sloppy, they had three large bulldozers, pulling the plow. Every mile or so they set up a hut so a tech could fuse 😂 all the strands of the fibre cable.
That tool on the tractor would make a great potato planter. 🤔

Tim, Given that fiber is not needed for your distance it would be better as you don't have to worrying about blowing out Ethernet ports from close lightning strikes. At the very least you should make sure you add some in line lightning protection on both ends that are grounded. Lot cheaper to add those then replacing hardware when ports go bad.
I had to dig up a trench for a new water line in my front yard back in Sept and ran like 80 ft. Everytime I hit a rock and it scrapped, I instantly was worried cause I didn't know what was under there. The preexisting water line was all over the place too. So I share the concern about possibly hitting the septic line.
The cutter will cut through small roots very good.
Could it be your sump pump drain going out to the woods? I'd be tempted to try that HH rig on laying some 3/4" water line for remote gardens and some cat6 for POE Cams as I have 300ft to do and my shovel is protesting that distance. My BiL and I made our own tool from a subsoiler shank and EMT conduit. We laid 450' of 1 1/4" pvc pipe with minimal problems. Once we got enough pipe in the ground to hold its position it pulled smoothly.

Remember an older episode where 811 was marking lines and mentioned they only mark from the road to the house and not other buildings like sheds and such. Haven’t really looked into it but was there a way for a homeowner to get a locator of their own that also wouldn’t break the bank.
I remember younger days when dad working for a sub contractor company digging trenches for phone companies they had their own locator. 811 would always have the job sites located before dad would be there with Johnnys older 410 brother, looking back on it now think dad’s company had a locator themselves to check places that 811 didn’t locate other times they wanted to make sure 811 was correct. Been sometimes 811 had been a foot off or more.
I remember they used Casey’s older sibling to plow in small cable from the house to phone pedestals. Remember them called case maxi sneaker. Articulates like a ventrac a steers with a lever instead of a wheel. Think if I was going to plow in lots of cable probably find a case maxi sneaker but for a once in awhile thing make more $ sense to get something like this heavy hitch plow

Almost perfect cable burrier you need to install a rolling coulter off a plow to cut the sod.

I would have run a pair of RF dishes and skipped all the ground work. I know this is a tractor channel, but it eliminates digging, and lightning concerns, and takes a very short time to set up. Writing over one right now, half a mile to my neighbor's fiber.
In this area it’s common (possibly code) to have perforated drain tile around the perimeter of your basement/pad then perf/non perforated to a ditch. I have occasionally also seen homes where the washing machine, dishwasher, and sinks go to their own drain pipes rather than go to the septic system for various reasons. If that’s very close to your septic, it is also common practice to have drain tile run across a slope above the leaching field in some applications to keep the field from getting too much ground water

Steel buildings, metal roofs, or metal foil attic insulation reflect wifi and cellular signals away from your router. Extra points if you know about angle of incidence = angle reflectance.
Dont forget to add network surge protection on each end or nearby lighning strikes will take out your ethernet switches or other components. Happed to me before i added protection.
If youre hitting septic that shallow you would find the small 1" low pressure lines, usually they are purple, this is a simple drain tile, patch and move on.

Cat 7 will certainly get the job done, but I have seen occasions where a nearby lightning strike manages to get into buried cable causing major damage, even with appropriate surge suppression devices. Fiber optic cable eliminates that possibility, as well as the possibility of random EM interference (granted, this is not common), and has really gotten cost effective over the years
Fiber optics also eliminate ground loop issues that you can have with different buildings. Because so many companies offer per-terminated fiber is basically custom lengths even with very nice pull hardware and staggered arrangements for easy pull it actually can be easier then running copper. I did this when running ethernet from the basement to the attic, I just ran 4 pairs of pre-terminated fiber. I did this in my old house with copper and was amazed how much easier the fiber pull was.
Was going to say the same thing. Seen someone run outdoor cat5 directly buried and a few years later it fried a switch and router on each end and a TV. Not sure if shielded or conduit would make any difference or not.
@@cashxx If lightning has enough oomph to go some distance through the ground and penetrate an insulated and shielded cable, I doubt conduit would make that much of a difference.....But, since this was a pretty shallow install, it would provide some cheap insurance against accidental damage due to maintenance and activity on the lawn, not to mention ease of replacement, should the cable ever fail. The only catch with buried conduit is that condensation eventually builds up and the cable is sitting submerged. Direct bury rated cable is not designed to handle constant immersion, and water can eventually penetrate, so you either need to allow for drainage or use a submarine rated cable for maximum life.
Please show how you hook up the bare wire on both ends & what tools you use. Are you going to install an electrical box inside? If so how is it done?
Speaking from experience, when in the ground and your machine does something funny, mark the spot. Even if you want to get finished before coming back to check, mark it. It will save your sanity.
I went with the EnStation5-AC wireless bridge to my pole barn. Basically no drop in speed from the house. Supposedly it has a 7 mile range. When I ran the electric from the house to the barn I buried conduit big enough to pull ethernet in later on, however when I pulled the electric wire after covering up the conduit I knew there was no way I'd be able to pull ethernet through it.
We are having trouble maintaining connection with WiFi…needed to show cable layer anyway.
its a good thing that wasn't a septic line at that depth or your problems would be much larger than hitting a line with the cable layer 😀

As one who has watched the Fat Electrician "PROPORTIONAL" can sometimes get a little bit out of hand.
That's a long shot for copper, especially between structures, and I'd be worried about distance and ground potential differences. Any reason you didn't go with fiber? Either direct bury, or some conduit and then shoot it? Otherwise, looks like a fun project, and thanks for sharing!

You should have put in conduit or black pipe . That way if you wanted to add another cable you could it also would protect it

Yep. Sump discharge is in the mix there too…but we don’t think this is it.

I’d have run multi mode fiber on the outside of the premises and then converted it back to copper inside the buildings.
Tim, l have had my 1025r for 3years now.Great little tractor. Had the 200 he serviced and had the transmission oil changed and the magnetic filter changed. Could l or should I skip the magnetic filter and just replace the transmission oil and be good ? They said l would have to take off the backhoe to get to the magnetic filter to remove it. Do to some of my limitations I thought I could skip that part because it was done at 200 hrs . You are still doing an amazing job. Have a blessed day. Thanks 🙏 😊

That's what I need except not sure where my water line is from the well to the house is. And the rocks, are something else. My building with my new phone does much better. My radio i hardly ever use because I can only get one channel and that's why I went with a cd player and I can play my own choice of music.
While i appreciate Direct Burial Cat7, I would have suggested 2" electrical conduit to the barn and Fiber, that way if you wanna get a 10Gb Feeder to the barn.... And still have space in the conduit for things like a copper telephone line or in my case I ran and extension to my Ademco panel.

I didn't receive it when I ordered the combo shank with the pipe layer attachment, but I did receive the "middle buster" plow blade. Perhaps I didn't get something selected that I should have... do you know if they sell the spool holder separately?
It is NOT included. I was mistaken.
I spoke to them a couple of weeks ago. They plan to make the spool holder a product, but had not done so at that time.
Perhaps worth a call to them.

When you select the combo shank does that come with every thing?
No. Have to buy HRA addition to basic shank. Combo shank includes the middle buster, I think. Don’t hesitate to call or email them to make sure you get it right.

CAT cable between buildings is so 90s. Fiber is the way to go. Even a wifi bridge would be better than CAT. Better to keep the buildings electrically isolated.
My guideline is never run copper network cable outside of a building. Always fiber. I have seen damage multiple times from lightning on copper connections.

Think it through….either unroll it all, or cut it. Those are your choices.
You should have done your homework. Never run low-voltage cables between buildings - even underground. Nearby lightning can and will introduce voltage spikes and damage the equipment at both ends of the run. If you MUST run copper wire, install Ethernet surge suppressors at both ends. A much better approach would have been to run a FIBER optic cable. Pre-terminated fiber cables are very inexpensive these days as are the little converters to convert copper to fiber on each end. Good luck.
Interesting. I have never had any equipment damaged by cables run between buildings. I am not saying your not correct, but I have never seen it happen.
I been running cables between buildings like this for 18 years, never had a call back. Switched to fiber now because it's less expensive.
Saying you never had call backs due to this type of damage is not a big surprise. Most people would not blame an install on lightning damage and it is not like even this is super common, but it most certainly happens. Also depending on where in the country you are lightning strikes may not be an issue. Where Tim is, i think it very much could be an issue.
@@hagak1679 I believe I caught my error. I read your statement as (Nearby LIGHTING not Lightning). That little "n" makes all the difference in the world. I was trying to figure out how nearby lights would induce enough current in the wire to cause damage.
And you are correct, near by LIGHTNING can cause that type of damage. However if it is close enough to induce a current in your underground ethernet cable, you already have more things at risk. Your more likely to get a surge through the power or phone lines that will damage equipment. Even with that, I am still in your camp and would choose to run fiber instead of cat5 or 6.

looks like you needed to "pre rip" the path for the cable. Meaning make a empty pass with the shank to loosen the ground and a second pass with cable deeper.
Following the same path again can be difficult.
