    I think you did quite well with the exposures. Ektar is a champ and can handle the high contrast very well, just so long as you don't underexpose it. Those highlights are very gradual compared to digital. Velvia 100 picks up a definite magenta cast as you had in that photo. You can neutralize it, but that's one of the reasons why I like Velvia 50. It is awesome that you are experimenting with the different films in different light to get the hang of them. If I was shooting those scenes, I likely would have done both Ektar and Velvia 50, but with a 3 stop grad filter for the Velvia shot to get a bit more light in the foreground. Provia would also do well for the second scene because it handles that higher contrast better than Velvia, doesn't go as strong with the color, and is easier to scan than Ektar.

      Ben Horne I think provia would have been the best choice. Velvia 50 is great but a scene that is already so saturated I think would be possible over kill.

      I would think you would need at least 4 stops of grad to expose that properly?

    I have to say I'm so impressed with the production quality of your video. No crappy jump cuts , lots of b-roll with good coverage. I know occasionally you'll have other people with you but if you're doing the majority of this on your own..... great job, it's tons of work.
    I used to shoot 4x5 landscapes and you'll never really loose that feeling of screwing up - even though you actually don't , most of the time. Nowadays Its a byproduct of being so reliant on digital.

    Wonderful Tom, I’m enjoying these videos as you experiment with slide film. I like your metaphor comparing it with learning to drive. You’re doing really well mate, so keep working at it. Ah yes, the uncertainty of film... should humble anyone who attempts it today. Consider the advertising, wedding, sports, etc., photographers of 15+ years ago and the stresses of the uncertainty of success until the moment the film was put on the light table. Failure was just an operator/assistant error, transport error, or lab error away; consider the knotted gut feeling when you informed the client of some failure and had to request a reshoot (if that was even possible). Back then, Polaroids were my best friend. I had backs for my 35mm, 2,1/4", and 4x5.
    That said, I loved shooting 4x5; the absolute control of focus tilts and swings, the side shifts.

    I shot film for years. I had a 5x7 and 8x10 Deardorff and shot Kodak E6 film in bulk! Before we went digital everything was shot this way. for Sears, Kmart I shot grills, bikes, paint, lawnmowers and all that goes with that. Film is hard work and you can have it! Even medium format is for the birds. Still enjoy your adventures, keep up the hard work!

    Great video! It's very interesting to watch someone do something the old-fashioned way. With digital cameras we tend to take it for granted that we can just take another shot and then look at it right away. Film, especially the type that you are using requires one to learn the ART of photography. I appreciate seeing somebody challenge themselves.

    • @markharris5771
      @markharris5771 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fernando Lavin Garcia I'm always amazed how much childish jealousy there is in photography, in the film world there are also the 'analogue police' who are more concerned about procedures than the finished image. One young lady made a brilliant video once with great images, the first comment was criticising her for the was she handled the edge of the negatives in the final wash. She hasn't made another video since and she is obviously talented. I know there is the "thick skin on TH-cam" argument, but it was straight at the throats like she didn't know what she was doing when she evidently did.

    • @Jeff-jg7jh
      @Jeff-jg7jh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where does this negative count reside? There's always one guy that makes a point to point out the negativity. I never see this. But I don't look for it.

    • @markharris5771
      @markharris5771 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jeff Nielsen Negativity Count? Maybe Sesame Street? If someone is risking newcomer's money, or they are giving bad advice, or worst, untruths, I will call them out on it. We all know what it is like being new to any mode of photography, and thinking GAS will give us better images. But good photographers, even average or new themselves, I will give 100% positive feedback. There are a couple of analogue channels who are on a steep learning curve and are always honest, they get all the encouragement I can muster.

  • @JDubyafoto
    @JDubyafoto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nicely done! It's also good to know you solved your light leak issues. As you're learning, exposure is key when shooting transparency materials. If you miss exposure by even 1/2 stop, you can get color shift. Miss it by a full stop or more and the image will look horrible, regardless of how good the composition is. But you understand exposure very well!! Keep practicing with the large format and you'll find your work stepping up to a new level!!

  • @dennismosercreativearts
    @dennismosercreativearts 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thomas - you used the analogy of driving a car for learning to shoot large format. Consider this, then: try to develop a "procedure" when you shoot large format. Be consistent in the steps you go through until, like driving a car, they are set habits and you no longer have to stop and think about it. Sometimes, it's just doing things in a set sequence so you remember that they are all done (load your film and use the tabs on the dark slides to indicate which have been exposed and which haven't for example).
    Also, have you considered using B&W film to learn with? I know you're finding some stunning landscapes, but you're also burning through (more expensive) color film, when you could be learning the "process" behind using LF using B&W film AND learn to process the film so you have even more control over your work.
    There is also the added bonus of the much greater latitude of working with B&W film, especially the negative material, being able to overexpose, then adjust in the actual film development.
    Just some impressions from someone who has been shooting digital and film (including 8x10) for over 50 years now.
    BTW, this shouldn't be seen as a negative, but rather as some suggestions to get you to that sweet spot where the gear is completely out of the way and you're visualizing those beautiful images and capturing them on 4x5!

    i have recently just picked up a 5x4... its such a rewarding experience. so far only shot black and white but if you are interested look in to picking up a 6x9 120 film back for it. 8 shots per roll and tons more colour film stock to choose from and it has the standard 35mm aspect ratio you are used to. Still plenty resolution to be had from 6x9. Great video.

    Great session. I am in my early 60's and remember when I was 18yo having a dark room, developing my own film. Using a small emparger I developed my own prints 4" x 6" and 12" x 8". DIdn't even have a light meter back then. Interesting to see you ging back to the basics.

    Having dabbled with LF in the film days I totally agree with the car analogy - learn by doing. Today there's still some really creative stuff being done by LF film photographers especially in wet collation which is another step deeper. Personally I prefer the flexibility of digital albeit with vintage lenses adapted. Each to their own on this creative journey.

    Great idea to set yourself this new challenge Tom...whatever the outcome it's these personal challenges that moves us forward both personally and as a photographer. I totally agree on the difficulty of trying to get your head around the large format issues whilst creating a vlog...I started on film so feel very comfortable with it but as my next challenge, I've just started doing my own vlogs (partly I confess inspired by yours !!) largely as a personal record of my trips and I doubt whether many people out there know how bloody tough it is to make a good vlog whilst not neglecting the real reason that you're there (i.e. the final images!).. Keep at it..if it was easy it'd be boring !!

    Just getting into film myself. 35mm though. I had an SLR and a couple lenses laying around so I figured I'd try my hand at it. I've read that serious landscape photographers use large format though, which makes sense I guess. The amount of detail captured in a large format sheet far surpasses any digital photograph. So I'm working my way up but for now, 35mm will be my starting point. I'm using Ektar at the moment. I found it has a great dynamic range and fantastic color reproduction. That paired with the fine grain, it's practically made for landscape photography

    It's great seeing you taking photos with film. Lately I'm also using film to document my hikes (mostly Ektar and Agfa Vista Plus). When you mentioned that you will be going to the Alps next week, I thought of inviting you to Slovenia, we have really beautiful mountains here :)

    Thomas, i enjoy your perseverance, keep plugging at the format, can i suggest that if you have any buffeting from wind, try the old trusted '"string grocery bag"' filled with rocks and suspend from the tripod centre column, i am sure it would steady the base and give you less stress when trying to concentrate on getting everything else right. Otherwise great stuff yet again, love the persistence.....

    Hi Tom, Amazing location, was down the valley at Ennerdale in October and had planned to try Great Gable but alas the rain made it pointless. Next time.. Great to see you pushing your boundries with the Large Format, looking forward to watching your journey with it and the fantastic images that i've no doubt will follow.

    Since you love panoramic images, and you seem to like middle-format photography (6x6), you should try 6x17 roll film holders that you can attach to your 4x5 camera. There are two manufacturers, Shen Hao and DaYi...

    Awesome video, I love your work, even the analog work :-) I also thing you are brave to do this trial and error "on the go", it was fun to watch and I'm very happy that you managed to get 2 awesome shots of that view. I can't wait to see next 4x5 video. Thanks!
