  • It's wine o'clock and I am talking about the things you need to know before visiting Sonoma, California's renowned wine region. I've traveled to this region dozens of times over the years and during all four seasons, so I've learned quite a bit that I am passing on to you.
This is the region where the California wine industry was born and wine tasting continues to draw visitors from around the world. I'm talking about the best time of year to visit, cost of wine tastings, pro tips about which winery to visit, and so much more. Also, I'm going to show you the many activities to do outside of wine tasting.
Be sure to hire a driver when you visit Sonoma!

Alllll right, I was born here in sonoma. My favorite part of your presentation was the slow noma. It is true. One tip from a native, when y’all are walking around our plaza could you please be aware of the people you are stopping from going on with our regular day by letting a car or two go at the crosswalks. Other words when someone is walking in the crosswalk don’t start your walk when they are half way through their walk. Let us get to work let us get to we’re we are going. Just be courteous to those of us who live here who don’t mind if you enjoy our town, but would like it very much. If you respected us too it was a very good presentation of my hometown. You did leave out the oldest winery in Sonoma and the oldest winery that First started industrializing wine Buena Vista winery founded in 1857. and if you’re about the one, you should definitely come up for vintage festival with a reenact the wedding between general Vallejo, daughter and Benicia

I've lived in the west county portion of Sonoma County for 50 years and can't imagine living anywhere else. I've traveled the world but haven't found a place that fits me as perfectly as Sonoma County. I associate Napa with cabernet and Sonoma County with Pinot Noir, especially in the west county that gets the cooling influence of the coast. My favorite Pinot comes from the Sonoma Coast and the Russian River Valley. I LOVE Gary Farrell pinot noir and it's a nice place to taste wine overlooking the Russian River Valley.

Thanks for the great tips! Definitely helps me focus on the essentials. I did pick Sonoma over Napa to experience more than wine- some dairy products, produce, chocolates etc. as well. If we have an extra day would you recommend going West and experiencing the ocean for sometime?

Great question! We recommend heading to the Sonoma coast where the Chardonnay is grown, or go to Calistoga, vlog here for trip ideas: th-cam.com/video/Ju0wFi1pEmY/w-d-xo.html

I've been there twice, much prefer it to Napa. Don't be afraid to get off the wine trail (hwy12). I highly recommend a visit to Fort Ross Winery above Jenner, Sanoma's only coastal winery and above the morning fog layer of the valleys. Their Pinotage is unique and outstanding.

You're right. I've lived in Sonoma county for 50 years. It's so much hipper than Napa!!! We have the coast, the giant redwoods, the Russian River, world class restaurants and world class wineries. The people are way less snooty too.

Great content, thanks. We've never been north of Paso Robles for wine country, but heading to Santa Rosa just to visit Kendall-Jackson in July Seemed silly to spend just one day, so I smartly added a day two. The Mission and Coppola are now on the list.

Just got back, it is so expensive to taste wine at these wineries and you get small pours. The scenery was great but the extra cost of tastings ads up after 6-7 wineries on a four day stretch from Napa to Sonoma.

Next time, perhaps you can visit some of the better wineries, like Siduri, Arista, Macrostie, Flowers, Brulium, Roadhouse, Walter Hansel, Kistler, Occidental, Boheme, Paul Matthews, on and on. Sonoma is so rich when it comes to outstanding Pinot!
