    I had to make sure, but this movie was animated by Topcraft, which is the same company that animated The Last Unicorn. That movie is one of my childhood favorites and is one I hope Saber covers, some day. Especially since Topcraft is the studio that evolved into Studio Ghibli.

      Doubly appropriate, considering how much of an influence the illustrations of Arthur Rackham had during the production of this one. (Some of the pre-production concept art leaned into his fantasy illustration style even _harder)_

    Rankin Bass was a really nice animation studio, most people know them for their christmas specials, but they did normal 2D pretty nicely. The last work they ever put out was Thundercats.

    • @CelticMagician
      @CelticMagician 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Agreed! Their 2D animation had a very distinct style to it too. I didn't realize that a good chunk of 2D animation I admired growing up was from them until I was older.

      In this case, Rankin Bass outsourced it to a 70s Japanese anime studio called Topcraft. They weren't that famous on their own, but after they dissolved, most of their staff went on to form the core teams at Ghibli and Gainax.

    • @TheBeatfox
      @TheBeatfox 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Most of Rankin Bass's productions were outsourced to Japanese animation studios - even their old stop-motion specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

      Or... the first season of The Smurfs was the last thing. :) Much like ThunderCats was MOSTLY done by TopCraft, as the 'main studio', not all of it was done by them, heh.

    Born in 81, of course I grew up with ANY Rankin/Bass animated movie. In fact when the live-action version of this movie was announced, my reaction was, "Why? We already have the animated one and that story is too short for 3 movies." The book is very small compared to The Lord of the Rings and was intended for kids. Having seen 2 of the 3 live action movies (my family wanted to see them), I still prefer this version, despite the good things the live action version did.
    Also for those who don't know this, all of Rankin/Bass's animated movies were made by Topcraft Studios, a Japanese studio that would eventually go on to be a part of Studio Ghibli. You can certainly see the beginnings here, especially in the backgrounds.

  • @widowkeeper4739
    @widowkeeper4739 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

    I grew up on this movie in the 1980's. Few fun facts is the bass singer singing "Down down to goblin town" is Thurl Ravenscroft, the original voice of Tony the Tiger "They're Grrrreat!" and singer of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" for Disney's Haunted Mansion and the Enchanted Tiki Room. Thorin's voice is Hans Conried -- also the voice of Disney's original animated Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Gandalf is John Huston and Bilbo is Orson Bean! And Glenn Yarborough is the tenor singing "The Greatest Adventure." It's hard to overstate the amount of sheer TALENT that went into this production. This cartoon will always have a very special place in my heart for having some of my favorite voice actors and singers of all time in it.

    Yeah I've always liked this version more, it just grasps the whimsical adventurous nature of what The Hobbit is supposed to be rather than a forced Epic to connect to LOTR.

      I agreed! I mean, its a pity that certain things got cut, but I actually prefer this version of Hobbit more. Especially since Bilbo is the main character, and his spotlight isn't divided between him, Thorin and Gandalf like in the Jackson films.

    12:47 - This is why in all live-action Tolkien adaptations the wargs are depicted as hideous monsters instead of the normal wolves Tolkien describes them as: because normal wolves look cute and we would feel sorry for them when they are killed by the heroes.

    I grew up having watched this movie as a four and five year old. When I was in the fourth grade I had forgotten about it, but seeing The Hobbit on the school library bookshelf, I felt a deep-seated sense that there was something wonderful and mysterious within the pages. I read it cover to cover that week and my life was forever changed. It helped that my mom and dad both loved Tolkien since they were young so I could nerd out about the stories with them. I read all the Tolkien that has ever been published as a teen. And it all started with this underrated old gem that is easy to mock but full of joy if you are willing to put aside your cynicism.

    The visuals for this movie were an integral part of my introduction to Tolkien even though I didn't see the movie itself until years later. When my mom wanted to read "The Hobbit" to me when I was 6, the only copy our local library had available was a battered "special edition" version that was richly illustrated with stills from the movie.

    Yoooooo I had this on VHS as a kid, it was one of my favorite movies ever, and my first introduction to LOTR. Hot take but Smaug in the Hobbit 1977 is way cooler than modern wyvern Smaug. He's got characteristics that the trolls, spiders, and goblins have and it ties him to the world visually as an adversary.

    _South Park_ loves putting in obscure-as-hell references to things. Remember "fighting the frizzies"? That was referencing a _commercial_ that appeared in one of the home tapings of the _Star Wars Holiday Special_ that was circulated among superfans. It hadn't been leaked to the internet yet at the time that episode was made, so Parker and Stone were referencing something that only people who had a physical copy would recognize.

    While it's not particularly smooth, I find the animation in this rather impressive. There are so many details on those character models and a lot of unexpected angles used to frame the shots. It's very unique. This had a reputation as being cheap back in the day, and while the Bakshi LOTR looks better, it's not that much better

    I will say this - Tolkien made elves too pretty. In traditional European folklore elves are very often seen as strange, supernatural, human yet not. You get occasions of humans marrying elves. In the Saga of Hrolf Kraki he has a half-sister who is half-human/half-elf. But you also have Scandinavian elf variants like the Huldra, elfs with an animal tail and a "hole" in their backs. Tolkien made his elves wise and fair as part of his world building, but that isn't the way elfs really are.
    That's why I love this version of The Hobbit, because the wood elves are closer to how traditional elves should look - similar to humans, but distinct in their own right. Plus it shows a greater difference between "High Elves" like Elrond, and Wood Elves from Mirkwood.

    A widescreen version huh, watching on my phone so I am not sure how the converters made the change, but this movie was made for TV and is supposed to be 4:3. Still better than nothing.

    The sword from the Smiling Friends was from Dragon Quest.

    South Park had the goblin song (granted a parody) and when I found out it was from this it blew my mind 😂
