Japanese Maple Trees, when to water and how much they need. Limiting water to encourage root growth

  • Watering Japanese Maple trees can seem daunting as too much or too little water can cause problems. Watering these trees can become easy using the right technique and she knowledge and limiting water can actually encourage root growth. Here I show how to use a water meter to monitor if trees need water, but also how to judge dryness by watching the water be absorbed by the compost. I encourage the use of a watering can to help asses exactly how much water is being used and also how to spot trees that are over potted, because that are obviously not drying out.

Hello Carl, I just wanted to share a tip that I got here on TH-cam from Sheffield Made Plants. If tap water is needed to water your plants, simply treat the water with "Aqua Safe" or some other similar treatment for aquariums. Only a few drops per are needed to treat the water making it cost effective, and really... if it makes tap water safe enough to have fish breathing it, I think it's safe for my bonsai! I've tried it with no ill effects, and have actually had plants FLOWER for me that haven't before. I'm certain my plants were not liking the chlorinated tap I was giving them, and now have thanked me for it by flowering! ❤❤ Please give it a try, as I have on my entire bonsai collection, including my Japanese maples. Also Carl, I just wanted to thank you! I would've never gotten Japanese maple bonsai if it wasn't for your channel and the information you provide. The previous name of your channel was perfect and said it all. The Benefit of Experience! Cheers!!

Thanks so much and I will certainly remember your trick with the water. I’ve been in trouble a few times when it’s been unexpectedly dry and I have needed water! Glad your enjoying the channel and yes despite the name change (to make it easier for people to discover) my philosophy is the same, you just can’t beat trying it for yourself! Cheers Carl

Very informative, you have inspired me to collect same rainwater 🙂 (not that we get much of it, most of the year in South Australia) 👍

How much bark mulch on top?

Just a thin layer is fine and certainly not piled up around the trunk!
