They needed a friend being like AB, a blank flank, then getting a cutie mark to isolate AB even more, making her feel like she is all alone before bringing in SB and Scoots. For all we know, AB and Twist could still be friend off screen. It's just not shown as it's not partaking in lessons or anything that fits into an 'episode'.
It's funny, because this is the type of shit that happens in dreams. Areas don't remain the same (objects shift, rooms randomly appear), people you know act strange, you randomly shift from 'scene' to 'scene', and never question it. It's funny, because any continuity error in this episode can be written off as "It was a dream", and it would work.

An interesting idea I had while watching this video: what if Starlight Glimmer had a dream like this before, and either Luna didn't intervene for whatever reason OR she refused to listen to Luna? It would explain why she thinks the way she does if a nightmare like that made her think that cutie marks would always end in disaster.

I'm one of those "geeky types". As soon as I saw AB going to bed I knew Luna would be making an appearance to complete the Luna & CMC triangle. Every CMC had dreams about their fears (Scootaloo feared the characters from RD's story and Sweetie Belle feared feared for Rarity's career) so it wasn't that hard realizing AB's dream would be about her fears and they were talking about cutie marks earlier so all I had to do was connect the dots. Guess I'm just too smart. :P

Bloom is name Bloom from Wiinx Club and when Big Mac said that AppleBloom must leave her home and change name for only Bloom, I thought, oh my star and then she was sent to magical world and this is how Bloom from Winx Club was created but of course this never happened.
I really like the lesson here...Even though you might not expect to get the job that you always wanted, you have to be happy with what you get. Also, don't abandon your friends just because they finally found their destiny/job and you didn't. And vice versa, don't abandon your friends because you finally found your destiny.
You know, all of a sudden I really want there to be a full blown Groundhog Day-type episode in the show. "Bloom and Gloom" had vibes and similarities to that, but I think they could still make a pretty good "live, fail, repeat until success" story. Or maybe even borrow an element from Majora's Mask and make the protagonist press the reset button manually!

But that means there is only ONE solution to whatever the problem is going to be. And no other way of going about it is right, they will all be WRONG no matter what. That is a BAD thing to have as a moral. There are usually multiple solutions to every problem. Some pratical and some not, some easier and some harder, but there ARE many solutions. Tell kids/people/ponies/foals there is only ONE and any other try will always fail? That's horrible.

I was thinking the CMC get their cutie marks together in the last episode. Maybe Starlight makes a return, but her magic doesn't work on people without cutie marks, hence the CMC saving the day. And in the process, they use their talents, and discover themselves there.
So far, I'm starting to LOVE this season the more these new episodes really put me in thinking about this show and the new direction it's going. "Bloom and Gloom" really did surprise me in how they tackled so a dark future of what the CMC will do after they finally get their cutie marks as well as their phobias, fears and regrets, not to mention that this is more darker then Sweetie Belle's dream episode. But nevertheless, it completed the triangle that Luna shaped together and it wrapped up in a nice conclusion. the music gets more brilliant the more I re-watch this episode, re-using the motif from "Somepony to Watch Over Me", references from "Swarm of the Century" and "Luna Eclipsed" and the animation giving more detail then ever before. Liked your reaction, though. It was a genuine one that keeps your guessing and questioning how a filly such as Applebloom is able to dream these things and will tap into the minds of many children who may relate to this episode in some way, shape or form. BTW, I feel like I'm the only one who is not familiar with the term "Groundhog Day". The three dreams applebloom had happen was because she had threes question about getting a cutie mark. The first one is if she got stuck with a cutie mark she doesn't like, like the pest pony cutie mark. The second dream is about no longer hanging out with her friends after getting her cutie mark, when applebloom got hers, her friends didn't have theirs yet and said they shouldn't even be friends, when she got rid of it, her friends did get theirs and the same thing happen again, she is all alone. The third dream is when she thinks her family get rid of her if her cutie mark has nothing to do with apples, when hers was a dolphin- serious! What is up with dolphins doing in ponies dreams- her family begin to say they do not except it and erase all history about her in the family history. Those dreams were made because of one thing, the strange creature in the woods which turns out to be her own shadow. Some people say that shadows are symbols of who our true selves and how we truly feel, people will keep on rejecting them like applebloom had done in the episode. Basicly applebloom had been lying to her self the whole time.

Poor AB. First of all, she's a massively late 'bloomer' when it comes to getting her cutie mark, then she ends up with the WORSE. CUTIE MARK. EVA... LOL!! Poor filly just can't catch a break...
My opinions of this episode pretty much mirror DrWolf's, in which, I respect the episode more than I enjoy it. The way it tells its moral is really cleverly executed, and while some of the dialogue felt a little "off", I think it's okay here, since the majority of the episode is inside the mind of a child. The humor was hit or miss for me, but some people may find it more funny than I did. I did think the cameos from Vinyl Scratch and Octavia were cool, but I think the biggest highlight for me was getting to hear what Babs was up to. I was waiting so long to see more of her, because anyone who causes humiliation to Diamond Tiara is automatically awesome to me, and this acknowledgement from the staff that she still exists makes me happy. (Here's hoping she makes an appearance in a later episode of Season 5.)
I love this episode so much. For one it's a CMC episode and a luna dream episode. I love that we get a lullaby sung by Applejack. Each of the nightmares Applebloom is one of her fears. I wonder if the Twittermites are real or Applebloom dreamt them up. I knew it was a dream but almost thought it wasn't when the first dream went on so long. Even though I haven't seen it this episode reminded me of Groundhog Day. It also reminds me of the fan game Story of the Blanks. I think Luna's job before becoming Nightmare Moon was to help ponies with their nightmares and is just starting to help more than one pony at a time. Also the CMC's dreams show that they subconsciously know what their talents are but are just afraid to fail. Also Babs is good at cutting because she is a city pony. And what was with the weird dolphin cutie mark? And what episode is the longest Big Mac's voice actor has spoken Applebuck Season, Ponyville Confidential, Filli Vanilli or this one And Vinyl and Octavia FTW I ship them so much8DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. I also think the CMC are going to get their cutie marks this season. Last thing I think this was a great lesson.
Yea, this episode was amazing! If there was one part I didn't enjoy is when Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon showed up. I don't care how important they were to the story, but I still hate it when they show up, but I still liked.
Yeah, they were and are some of the weakest characters in the show. They're just there to fill the diva bully stereotype, but that doesn't really work when they can't swear. She just makes PG insults in a high pitched voice.
ALSO, this is another small detail, but I just happened to be watching someone's reaction to Shenanigans Vol 7 and in the credits it says VI instead of VII :P
It's not a dream in a dream scenario actually. It's about I guy who, when he goes to sleep, wakes up the previous morning, thus having him stuck in the same day. But this gives him infinite chances to do what he wants and get it right. Just watch it. It's a fantastic film.

CrazyChippy What? Where is the part with AB going crazy and causing mass havoc? These are all nightmares after all, not AB going crazy in the real world, having a mental break down and going about stealing other pony's cutie marks as her own. It's more of Sleepless in Ponyville, the Scootaloo being afraid of sleep. The difference being that AB actually sleeps and Luna doesn't come in quickly and takes her time.
***** Actually, Scootaloo and Apple Bloom were both able to sleep. The difference is that one of the nightmares caused a premature awakening, while the other one could not be awoken from (which is arguably much, much worse).
While I do think this is the weakest of the dream trilogy, it’s still a very solid episode. And that voice is one of the creepiest things MLP has ever done.

Poor AB. First of all, she's a massively late 'bloomer' when it comes to getting her cutie mark, then she ends up with the WORSE. CUTIE MARK. EVA... LOL!! Poor filly just can't catch a break...
My opinions of this episode pretty much mirror DrWolf's, in which, I respect the episode more than I enjoy it. The way it tells its moral is really cleverly executed, and while some of the dialogue felt a little "off", I think it's okay here, since the majority of the episode is inside the mind of a child. The humor was hit or miss for me, but some people may find it more funny than I did. I did think the cameos from Vinyl Scratch and Octavia were cool, but I think the biggest highlight for me was getting to hear what Babs was up to. I was waiting so long to see more of her, because anyone who causes humiliation to Diamond Tiara is automatically awesome to me, and this acknowledgement from the staff that she still exists makes me happy. (Here's hoping she makes an appearance in a later episode of Season 5.)

I love this episode so much. For one it's a CMC episode and a luna dream episode. I love that we get a lullaby sung by Applejack. Each of the nightmares Applebloom is one of her fears. I wonder if the Twittermites are real or Applebloom dreamt them up. I knew it was a dream but almost thought it wasn't when the first dream went on so long. Even though I haven't seen it this episode reminded me of Groundhog Day. It also reminds me of the fan game Story of the Blanks. I think Luna's job before becoming Nightmare Moon was to help ponies with their nightmares and is just starting to help more than one pony at a time. Also the CMC's dreams show that they subconsciously know what their talents are but are just afraid to fail. Also Babs is good at cutting because she is a city pony. And what was with the weird dolphin cutie mark? And what episode is the longest Big Mac's voice actor has spoken Applebuck Season, Ponyville Confidential, Filli Vanilli or this one And Vinyl and Octavia FTW I ship them so much8DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. I also think the CMC are going to get their cutie marks this season. Last thing I think this was a great lesson.

Yea, this episode was amazing! If there was one part I didn't enjoy is when Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon showed up. I don't care how important they were to the story, but I still hate it when they show up, but I still liked.
Yeah, they were and are some of the weakest characters in the show. They're just there to fill the diva bully stereotype, but that doesn't really work when they can't swear. She just makes PG insults in a high pitched voice.
ALSO, this is another small detail, but I just happened to be watching someone's reaction to Shenanigans Vol 7 and in the credits it says VI instead of VII :P

It's not a dream in a dream scenario actually. It's about I guy who, when he goes to sleep, wakes up the previous morning, thus having him stuck in the same day. But this gives him infinite chances to do what he wants and get it right. Just watch it. It's a fantastic film.

CrazyChippy What? Where is the part with AB going crazy and causing mass havoc? These are all nightmares after all, not AB going crazy in the real world, having a mental break down and going about stealing other pony's cutie marks as her own.
It's more of Sleepless in Ponyville, the Scootaloo being afraid of sleep. The difference being that AB actually sleeps and Luna doesn't come in quickly and takes her time.

While I do think this is the weakest of the dream trilogy, it’s still a very solid episode. And that voice is one of the creepiest things MLP has ever done.
NO! Don't remind me of the Vashta Nerada! Doctor Who is awesome, but those flesh eating parasites that hide in the darkness and are capable of reanimating the skeletal leftovers of their prey are EXACTLY what causes severe insomnia in those who watch that episode!
