is fern gonna die at the end of this anime? its still ongoing so who knows but i could imagine the last scene of the last episode being her dying as an old woman and frieren standing next to her or something like that. saw episode 16 at friday. cant wait for you to progress further, such a grate anime.

I think it's a beautiful sentiment: It didn’t have to be magic, but magic is what Fern chose. Why did she choose it? Because of the smile on Heiter's face when she cast her spell. Fern has dedicated her life to it, and even though it's beem a far shorter one than Frieren, she still had to be reminded of that reason. Frieren is the same. She collects eclectic spells as a hobby, but the underlying reason is the smiles of her companions and the fact that Himmel complimented her. It was enough that even almost 80 years later, she continues to do it.
Yes, love that as well. =) It makes her remember her friends she did not get to know... =(
@@storieswithstyleI think a part of the story is her finding out how much she really knew her friends. At the start, she says herself that she barely knew them, but we see in these episodes that she remembers all these little things about them, like the flowers, or favorite foods, etc.

@@folcwinep.pywackett8517 it's not wierd, sadness is a way to process difficult emotions, processing your own death and the briefness of life is a big part of gorwing up and becomming a better more whole person. Sadness and tears are not to be feared but embraced when genuine.
Second episode and we can already seen Frieren's growth.
She used to be indifferent of time and deaths, but now we can see her scolding Heiter for choosing to send Fern away instead of her making more memories with him before he passed away.
Yes, it is slow but I love it. I am very worried for Fern, though (increasingly as episodes pass) =D
The best part of this anime is definitely how Frieren treats her memories of her late party members.
For most stories, the scene of Himmel passing before he could he show the flowers to Frieren would be treated as some sort of tragedy and Frieren should be crying her hearts out in regret. But, no, Frieren sees the flowers and just says to her memories of Himmel, "Yep, you showed them to me alright".
Yes, she has a refreshingly different perspective. =) Love that so much. =) It becomes more apparent later, though, I feel. =)
I think the "seed rat" is a case of fantastic translation. The Japanese word for "squirrel" is basically "chestnut rat," so I assume that was used to make the atmosphere a little more "fantasy."

It's a small thing, but I really like that Frieren didn't pour one out for the corrupt priest, but TWO. One for the road, old man.

I think Fern chose to learn magic as a "profession" despite claiming she doesn't particurarly like it because she carries that memory they showed of her as a little girl conjuring those butterflies made of light while Heiter watches her smiling and she feels her magic made Heiter happy, so it's also her way of carrying his memory with her all of her life on top of the fact that she's aware that Heiter saved her life and raised her as his own daughter.
Yes, it is probably beacuse of Heiter, who was asically her grandfather/father figure, which is really wholesome! =)
And so, ladies and gentlemen, we have seen the first time when Malti responds to the ending credits with, "I am not alright!"
(Gleefully watching these to see him go "I am not *fucking* alright! *Sobs*")
Yeah, that ending got me so much. =( Hope to do the part 2 translations soon, but everytime I rewatch I find I missed a word :D
This anime is a journey, not just through place but also through memories, distant and recent. Even though Himmel and Heiter are dead, they will appear frequently through the story as Frieren recalls moments from their journey.
This story ceases to not make me cry, no matter how many times I watch it, even though I already know it's coming after reading the source material.
Edit: Another Anime with German themes is Ascendance of a Bookworm. It's about a 22 year old book crazed woman is killed by her falling bookcase, she awakes in a sickly 5 year old to poor commoner parents. She becomes determined to create inexpensive books so that she can have something to read again. The author chose German themes to enhance the feeling of it being botha fantasy and another world.
Yeah, this one is really beautifully done. There is also not alwys the topic of sadness and death and time but also many others that are dealt with beautifully. =)
I will put ascendence of a bookworm onto the list for potential future animes, thanks for the recommendation! =)
@@storieswithstyle Oh! I love that series! It started as a novel series and the story really changes and develops a lot throughout! It's really well written and the worldbuilding too! I'd reccommend giving the novels a read too if you'd like! (There's a manga for it too, but it's behind the novels in where they are in the story.)
Personally, I felt that the anime we got for it did not do the story justice at all, but since the new season of AoB is supposedly getting picked up by WIT Studio (The same studio as Attack on Titan from season 1 to 3), it's likely to give the story the beauty and justice it deserves imo, especially since the parts they're picking up from are where the story gets even better. I hope you give the series a chance!

I believe spells in this show are reflections of what other mages found important. In a way, collecting different spells is collecting the memories/desires of other mages.

In the scene where Frieren calls Eisen and Heiter "disgusting" because they made flower wreaths for each other and are playing by exchanging these on each other's heads.
I think this comedy trope is about the when a man (men in this case) is doing girly things, in an out-of-character manner for him and a woman sees what he is doing with which the woman reacts with comedic, temporary disgust that comes generally from the thought of "Why is he acting girly all of a sudden?"

the "why do you love magic" thing,:
think it was because she could make someone else feel happy with her magic and or create a memory through it. like Fern made beautiful butterflies for Heiter and Frieren made the flower field for her party and Himmel. and thats also why frieren collects "useless magic".like naking a flowerfield, or cleaning a bronze statue might not be useful in combat but it can bring other people joy.
and Fern specifically "choose" magic because it was what made Heiter happy :)

Frieren visited Heiter at 20th years after Himmel's passing. Fern started the journey with Frieren at 26th years after Himmel's passing, so Frieren spent 6 years total.

This feels like the endgame of a video game. After defeating the final boss, you go out and do all the sidequests, collect all the items, and explore all the lore.
well the hero's party went to do some side quests before completing the main story quest. i think frieren is just completing achievement quests.

Himmel will come up a lot. He touched so many lives, and he left his mark all over the world. Both in his actions, and with statues of himself.
Yeah, I currently have the suspicion (after e4) that Himmel was the protagonist of another story and now we switch over to a "side character", which I love. =)

Very much so. Frieren exists as a leaf carried by the wind, and for a while he was that wind.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the show to release and for your reactions to it. Learning the meaning of all the German names has been great.
The first 4 episodes combined are considered the prologue, then we have cour 1 (the next 12) and cour 2 (the last 12). You can break the prologue up however - the studio did it on release themselves. I think my favorite moments here were the turtle scene and the magical butterfly scene. The turtle looks like they're just enjoying nature, but if you replay and slow it down or even pause, you'll see Frieren is looking close for the flower while Fern keeps it occupied with tasty food. I loved it though because of how gorgeous the turtle was. And the butterflies I loved because it was a clearly beautiful moment of joy between Fern and Heiter. The put so much beauty into this show, it's amazing.
Yes, indeed, it's amazing how much beauty Madhouse is putting into this story. They are taking a great story, and making it even greater! This is the best manga-to-anime adaptation that I have ever seen.
Yes, there really is a lot of beauty. I love it when a show takes time to beathe. =) Madhouse really lives up to its reputation (though I only saw OPM by them, which was also excellent). =)
@@storieswithstyle Not only do they take time to breathe. They show you what's happening in the moment beyond just the characters, and they show it well. A person could probably watch each episode six times and find something new each time.

In Episode 1, Heiter said Fern is a War Orphan from the southern Lands, so i assume the Town she lived in with her Parents ended up in the middle of a Warzone which ultimately destroyed the entire Town and even the Civilians were killed, with Fern most likely the only surviving Person from that Town.
Btw, the Anime reached with Episode 16 only up to Manga Chapter 34, with currently 119 Chapter released since its a relatively new Manga (first Manga Volume released in August 2020) and its still ongoing. The Anime will most likely end at exactly Chapter 60 since it has 28 Episodes in total. So, no one knows what the Author plans or how long the Story ultimately will go 🤔

You probably know this by now but the first 4 episodes are like a mini movie prologue hence the lack of a "plot", because they are setting up the world and the plot to come. I appreciate your real time analysis. It is interesting to hear how someone else interprets things in real time.
Yeah, Frieren was definitely my favourite show of last winter. I was really amazed in the end how much depth the show had especially through the neames and themes. definitely one of my top 10 anime of all time already. =)

She is collecting all the spells she can because that is the way she makes people happy as in a later flashback where she makes Heiter happy by using a spell to make crushed ice, with which Heiter was going to make a dessert
frieren knows that she doesn't know how to tell you that she loves you, she can't make you happy with words, the reason she collects all the spells is because it's her way of connecting with people, she can't make people feel better with words but You can always do a spell that gives you water when you are thirsty, a spell that cools you when you are hot or warms you when you are cold, which is why Frieren obsessively collects spells because that is how he communicates with others through magic.
Yeah, she is not very sociable, but that happens, she makes up for it with her actions. =)
I ran into a TH-cam poll asking about favorite anime of the season. Frieren was in a distant third place, with people complaining that entire episodes pass with "Nothing happening".
I learned during COVID, when everything went insane, that argument between unconnected folk no longer has purpose, so I didn't bother telling them they were missing the point.
As far as I'm concerned, you are watching this correctly, as much as a piece of media can be "correctly" consumed, it's all subjective really.
But with a show from the perspective of a fundamentally immortal non-human, ya gotta be patient! Enjoy the ride! 😊

This show is a more subtle way to tell us about the small things in life, and also the big questions, it's really masterful, and I appreciate the "beyond journey's end" side of the tale which the whole thing to be frank. Lovely reaction video, and the Heiter moment was emotional for real. Also, I feel like Frieren is the type of people who conceal emotions a lot, and I speculate that she's at the most pain of them all, her longevity or immortality can add up to her suffering, but yeah life is life, and it is a finite journey, short or long it is still finite.

It's a fact that the only things we will ultimately leave behind when we pass on are our legacies, memories, stories and deeds. The hard part is finding someone worthy or willing to remember, retell and pass on those legacies to the next generation.

A lot of people would say that Frieren continues to get better and better from now to the latest episode, but I'd still say that episode 2 is my favorite and makes me the most emotional when watching it.
For me 2 is currently the favourite as well. All are great, though. =)
Yes. There will be many flashbacks centered around Himmel. You will learn more about their past and how it changes Frieren's view on life. It's amazing story telling and I'm glad you like it! I love your reactions. I hope you will finish the season.

It's wild how many people breakdown the immediately in this anime...and in such a unique way. It's a rollercoaster. I was toast right off the bat the night it was released when we got the first 4 at once. 28 episode first season and there's plenty of content after that. Let's "enjoy" the ride. 😂

I think most accurate genre for this anime is road movie. It's fantasy, of course, but it's not fully an action or comedy or tragedy. It's melancholic and calm road movie and i love it so much

The immortality/resurrection was such a curve ball to throw specially right at first few episodes and alot of people overthink because of that. People even think they gonna just revive Himmel later.

I can see your underlying reaction is "why the story progresses this way". As I believe you will reaxt to a lot more of animation, so I strongly recommend you to learn, or react to, kishotenketsu storytelling.
Asian literature is predominately using this structure. And by learning so, you can enjoy any anime even more

Fern doesn't particularly like magic for what it is but she stuck with it because it made Heiter happy.
This is the reason why Frieren keeps saying "we're the same", that seeming apathy on their surface carries a lot of weight.

Apparently the German subtitling team used "Tag" instead of "Turk".
That is intresting :D I wonder why?
@@storieswithstyle Seems to have been a mistranslation on the part of the English team. In Japanese, the name is written "taaku", so the ending k sound makes it look like "Turk". But I did a search for how the Japanese would transcribe "Guten Tag" into katakana, and came up with "guuten taaku", again with that k.
So given the choice between a German word and a non-German word in this series, I'd assume it's meant to be the German one and there was a mistake in the subtitles.

XD Nice reaction. I think your conclusions are correct. This anime is all you say at the same time but not more than that. Seems that at sometimes you struggle to find meanings in meaningless things, and thats the meaning of why they are there anyway XD, the author want us to notice the meaningless things we dont notice in our quick and short lives, but notice them dont give them any value per se. It just make our lives maybe, just maybe more richer to be lived on. Who better to show us that than a cute long lived elve. XD

Is there any official word on how old Heiter is here? I was thinking ten years with the party, 50 years later, then 20 years after that... then another 4 years Frieren is there with the grimiore, that's 84 years plus however hold he was when they started the party to go after the Demon King... he's got to be hovering around 100 at this point at least.
I think I estimate him to be about 110 somewhere in the future :D

The incoming episode will tell you why. By flowers. Frieren master loves flower so frieren also loves about flowers. Just dont want to spoil thing but, episode 1-10 will tell you why frieren acts and thinks like this.

I'm sure that name thing is jut stylistic choice. But if you need some realistic explanation you can go with my little pony route. If their talent dont fit to their birth name... they change the name.
Might be, but some of the names really describe what they name well, so I guess it is looking at the world through "the watcher's eyes" and not getting their real names but the ones the story chooses to give us. =D
The first 4 episodes were released on day one. It's a little painful watching ypu make 2 hours last weeks. Double up episodes 3 and 4. You need to get to the meat of this story.
