    *Instantly gets paradox engine banned*

    • @robertbauerle5592
      @robertbauerle5592 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      To be fair, Urza isn't the reason why paradox engine got banned. The card was ridiculously powerful in pretty much any edh deck that runs a lot of mana rocks/dorks and has the ability to storm off easily.
      Additionally, I personally don't think paradox engine should've even been banned at all, as it goes against what I think commander should be. The most powerful format, where the most powerful cards are allowed to be played. I think more cards like Iona should be banned. The cards that are only good in casual games, but completely destroy the fun of the interaction between players.
      On another note while I'm ranting here, people complain about Urza being too strong, but I don't believe those claims are justified in commander. He's a powerful card, and should be played as such. Don't play Urza at casual tables (in the same way that you don't play Godo at casual tables, or even cards like mana crypt), he's too powerful for lower tier decks and the interactions he'd have there are not fun, since his power level is too high (not like Iona, a card that just turns off a mono-colored player and does nothing to everyone else). However, I think Urza plays very unique in CEDH as a stax commander that can also combo, and plays perfectly under his own stax because he turns them off - basically turning the commander game into a game of archenemy. I've played with and against him a lot, and I think he interacts in a way that can definitely be fun for all sides at the table.

    Very nice match! That Brago deck plays some cards that Id put on the more casual side though.

    • @Grushvak
      @Grushvak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      In fact, it runs some cards so casual I wouldn't even play them in the average casual deck. But at a cEDH table, they suddenly loop back around to great. Big Lavinia is a card you'll usually only see in the weakest flicker decks, but when you're playing at a table with 4 Vauts, 4 Rings, 4 Crypts, an abundance of moxen and monoliths, suddenly it becomes really good.

    • @bluesmanshoes
      @bluesmanshoes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Grushvak I agree that it was the most impactful card but would still say its underwhelming overall. Im playing brago stax myself and of course also experimented with Lavinia. As you said it taxes opponents mana and stops e.g. Tymna from drawing cards for one turn cycle. The thing is there are many stax pieces that do the same thing for as long as they stay on the battlefield, cost only 2-3 mana and do not require you to blink them every turn. She was worse than a Time Warp here if you will as opponents could still develop board and hands. Also you really dont want to rely on blinking when it comes to staxing the game. Brago usualy only comes down once you slowed/locked the game already and Ghostly Flicker and the like arent really worth playing in my opinion. I could see her being great with something like a winter orb and brago in play to blink her every turn. But again that requires a lot of setup and in that scenario I would prefer a Tangle Wire over Lavinia for sure. Finally I want to mention that this was a very slow table - 2 stax and 2 grindy control decks. If you are up against faster combo decks there is no way that tapping out for a 5cmc card that halfheartedly staxes for one turn cycle will get the job done. Well, it still did more than Counterbalance I suppose :D

      @HugSeal42 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeanventura5366 The errata makes it clear that that shouldn't happen since gilded drake makes an exchange, it was a bad judge call. The drake ability can be a bit misleading since the ability still resolves if the target becomes illegal, so it wouldn't fizzle. But that is just to make you sacrifice the gilded drake.
      "When Gilded Drake enters the battlefield, exchange control of Gilded Drake and up to one target creature an opponent controls. If you don't or can't make an exchange, sacrifice Gilded Drake. This ability still resolves if its target becomes illegal."
      The rules for exchange are:
      701.10a A spell or ability may instruct players to exchange something (for example, life totals or control of two permanents) as part of its resolution. When such a spell or ability resolves, if the entire exchange can’t be completed, no part of the exchange occurs.
      (Example: If a spell attempts to exchange control of two target creatures but one of those
      creatures is destroyed before the spell resolves, the spell does nothing to the other
      creature.)
