  • Thousands of people flooded the streets of Palma de Mallorca on Sunday to call for limits on tourism in the Spanish resort city.
Anti-tourism activists have staged several protests this year in popular holiday destinations like Barcelona, Malaga and the Canary Islands, frustrated with increased tourism which they say is driving up the cost of living for residents.
“We are not against the tourists as such, we are against the touristic model,” said protester Alvaro Sanchez.
“We are suffering the consequences of this model because we cannot afford living here. That’s because tourists with (a) higher standard of living, they come here and they higher our standards of living as well,” he added.
In the first quarter of the year, 16.1 million people visited Spain - and increase of 18 per cent compared with the same period last year. Tourism generates 45 per cent of the Balearic islands’ GDP.

I like how they blame tourism and not the millions of people that are breaking into the country

It is tourism. Foreigners come in and buy lots of apartments and convert them into air bnb at prices locals can't afford. A lot of apartments have been bought out by then for that. The illegals in the countries are not doing that. They trying to survive by working. I was there and have seen all this.

@@Plug604 Tourists aren't afforded the same privileges as citizens but can still potentially buy property. In the case of Spanish cities many have become popular with the ultra wealthy of the world and most of the properties have been bought either by those wealthy tourists or luxury brand venture capital to lease as short term rentals. (I think this is happening to a lesser degree in Tampa Bay as well)
This leads to a situation that is pretty bogus where labourers who serve the tourists commute into the tourist cities and can't afford to patronize the businesses their peers work for.
Thanks for asking a genuine question despite me being short with you. I'm sorry.
