I’ve seen every interview on TH-cam. This guy isn’t just a great showman.....he is smart as hell. First time I’ve ever heard a well spoken “California Stoner Dude.” Very intuitive and intelligent.
DD always took a hit for his aka rambling. What ppl didn't understand is he is an intellect. His brain runs faster then his mouth can, he speaks intelligence. His metaphors are the best. I always dug this cat. Always loved his intellectual personality.
You believe people misunderstood DLR?? I don't believe anyone ever misunderstood his "intellect". People got tired of him talking..... constantly and his self-absorbed antics. Eddie+ co spoke on it 1,000 times,.....probably more actually.
DLR knows and understands what to do and who to look for. Its no surprise that he has had the opportunity to work with the best guitarists (EVH, Vai, etc). He seems crazy, but hes a genius on the inside.
SInce that Joe Rogan interview, I've been on this whole DLR interview kick. MAN....he makes sooooo much more sense now. 20 years later. Maybe because I'm older and understand him more?
He ALWAYS makes sense...my brother showed me an article in 1982 and I said wow that guy's really smart whoever it is and he goes and this is what he looks like! And I said oh yeah that's my type
Do you notice he never uses "uhhh" and "ummm" in his speech pattern? That is the sign of a highly intelligent individual who can process thoughts rapidly and elucidate them just as fast. Eloquent speech is a rare quality.
He's always been a really smart guy, but yeah... I never understood him when I was younger either. Just thought of him as a party jock who could sing rock music. That's just a fraction of what he is. Love Dave!
Yeah I was drinking at the Nelson with friends, and lo and behold, DLR was standing at the bar talking to some young woman. He is by FAR the most interesting interview of any front man ever in rock music. Love his "Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it" quote. Classic Roth zaniness.
0:53 Dave: "The guy who cuts holes in the knees of his pants, just doesn't look the same as if they got worn thru in reality" Camera cuts to interviewer with hole in pants. Nice
I've watched several of his interviews since EVH died - really didn't know anything about this guy until then. He is fascinating in every interview - an extremely intelligent and down to earth man. He went to school at the age of 50 to be an EMT. Worked in the bronx as an EMT for 4-5 years. He's had an interesting life.
MAN did he age from 1986 to 1991. He was only 35 here, but looks like he's well into his 50's here. By contrast at 30, he could pass for a guy in his early 20's. He also developed that fake smile and nervous laugh that he didn't have only a few years earlier.
Diamond David Lee Roth... after his concerts, your leave walking 12” off the ground baby!!! He doesn’t get enough credit for knowing and understanding music!!!
Roth is like an old time showman. Even his vocabulary, calls people "folks", girls "gals", wipes his mouth with a hanky, always the chesire cat grin. I wonder if you hung with the guy for a few days if he could bring it down a notch, or always in high gear, talking about all things "colorful"...Steve Hunter played ghost solos on Aerosmiths 2nd album actually, Train & Same old song & dance.
I LOVE the part where he explains how he recruited Steve Hunter and Jason Becker for this release...."Ask the groupies....go back and check with them again....*laughs*....then go back and check with them again".... DLR would be my dream interview. He makes for great copy each and every time!
Do you notice he never uses "uhhh" and "ummm" in his speech pattern? That is the sign of a highly intelligent individual who can process thoughts rapidly and elucidate them just as fast. Eloquent speech is a rare quality.

Ummmmmm, yes I noticed ..in 1983..in his articles, and then my brother(showed me his picture) and said"this is what he looks like" ... scream! But yes to get back to your comment that he doesn't say almonds in everything I noticed that ,God he's smart
JEEZ, MAN. I practically FELT this interview coming to life as it happened, seriously. Truly organic in its exchange. Diamond Dave sure knows how to spin a compelling yarn, but as the interview goes on, the interviewer is also a great guy to bounce off with. He's also right up in there, with Dave, pushing the interview to great heights. One of the most "two-way street" interviews I have seen in a while. That was a perfect person to interview David Lee Roth, at least that's the way I felt.
Omg, I totally forgot Dave stayed at the Nelson hotel. I remember hearing this. I used to work close by and often look for him but never crossed paths. The band he doesn't mention is Bon Jovi. They were all recording at Little Mountain Sound. Damn, I love Dave. He's such colourful, intelligent, humourous guy.....mwah!
Jason Becker would have eclipsed the great man himself Steve Vai if lou gehrig's disease hadn't got in the way. Dave can honestly say he's recorded with arguably the three greatest guitar players of all time.
Your not gonna get many if any to argue with Dave saying he worked with three of the greatest guitar players, he worked with THE greatest guitar player of all time, of course Eddie Van Halen, and both Steve Vai and Becker gave Eddie a run for his money, but as the other great that did too
i was excited as a kid at Christmas when Dave mentioned Jason Becker. If you don't know the Story of Jason Becker Ain't Dead Yet, then you have something that you had better do.
When Roth mentioned his big Buddy Ed...was he talking about Eddie Anderson?? And Jason Becker.. what a friggin tough deal he got. That kid could play the guitar too. Just a few months after getting in Roth's band, he went and had some tests run because his fingers kept going numb on him. And he found out he had ALS....what a frigging nightmare. God Bless you kid...
I also got to go backstage after of Van Halen in Detroit Michigan at cobo Hall. The only one backstage when I got there it was David Lee Roth and I was so starstruck I could not ask for his autograph all I could do was stare at him. I was 18. There was everything back they're all kinds of food drinks they even have cigarettes for everybody. Well I had met a roadie so the roadie ended up taking me by limousine to the motel the Renaissance center and the next morning I was given a t-shirt of gold Van Halen necklace and money to get home. A memory I will never forget.
I was about 16 in Detroit Michigan. And my friends and myself snuck in to the motel The Ren cen by the steps. The security guards caught us and we were put in the elevator and escorted back downstairs. The elevator stopped on a certain floor and guess who got in the elevator ??? I was in shock I couldn't speak I will never forget I am now sixty years old and I think about it like it's yesterday. It was David Lee Roth he had a girl on each side of him. His arms were around their shoulders. He only went down a couple floors and got out. When the elevator opened up I'm not lying to you a robot was there. Now this was the late 1970's. Well my friends and myself were in HEAVEN FOR A FEW.
I’ve seen every interview on TH-cam. This guy isn’t just a great showman.....he is smart as hell. First time I’ve ever heard a well spoken “California Stoner Dude.” Very intuitive and intelligent.
I like Dave he's for real.
That's where you are wrong.dlr is a character not a real person.
DD always took a hit for his aka rambling. What ppl didn't understand is he is an intellect. His brain runs faster then his mouth can, he speaks intelligence. His metaphors are the best. I always dug this cat. Always loved his intellectual personality.
It wasn’t intellect, he wasn’t born with a brain that just naturally runs fast it was cocaine that’s it.
You believe people misunderstood DLR?? I don't believe anyone ever misunderstood his "intellect". People got tired of him talking..... constantly and his self-absorbed antics. Eddie+ co spoke on it 1,000 times,.....probably more actually.
Definitely couldn't have been successful without him
People don’t get it but I do
Dave-isms
Love him or hate him, David Lee Roth is an intelligent guy. He knows music inside and out.
Anyone who hates is jealous! This guy is cool!
He reminds me of the " Jeff Specoli " character played by Sean Penn from Fast times at Ridgemont high.
DLR is brilliant!!! If you can’t keep up with his thinking it’s cause you aren’t smart enough to get him. PERIOD!!!
Love you Dave ❤️
DLR knows and understands what to do and who to look for. Its no surprise that he has had the opportunity to work with the best guitarists (EVH, Vai, etc). He seems crazy, but hes a genius on the inside.

I've been doing and thinking the same!
I dare anyone to watch just 10 secs of a DLR interview and stop! You’re glued to it!
CCRider100 Sham baby! How are ya?! lmao
"Money can't buy happiness, but you can buy a helicopter with it and land next to some." To be exact.
He's made his mark in life being in one of the biggest and most influential rock bands of all time. And you?
0:53 Dave: "The guy who cuts holes in the knees of his pants, just doesn't look the same as if they got worn thru in reality" Camera cuts to interviewer with hole in pants. Nice
Haha I thought that was excellent timing also funny is the interviewer is pissed because he can't get a word in edgewise
What a great comment though from DLR
I noticed that, too. I was waiting for Dave to say to the guy, "but it looks good on YOU though!" lololololololol
I don't know why you guys think he's coked out.... He is ALWAYS this way.... Always.
Pepper Wilson I AGREE
Pepper Wilson He has ADHD or something
It's a natural trait... Got the same 😁👍🏻
Say No to Drugs 😎✌
He’s usually more hyper
Who said the shit that you put in their ears bypassing their mouths? I just searched the comments and found nothing of your bull.
This is a great interview. Much Music probably had the best presenters of any show I've seen (many). They were all very knowledgeable.
Dave must be the happiest guy alive ever he really LIVES and devaour every moment😁. Never a doll moment in his life i think😊..
I was there looking at him in through the window oh my God I met my Rock God I was speechless he was amazing I was shocked to meet him !❤👍😀😄🤩

He's so smart and charismatic.
I believe the interviewer asked Dave a question somewhere towards the beginning. I can't recall for sure...
He IS THE BEST FRONTMAN EVER!!! No one compares!!!
For sure 100% the best frontman ever, the king of all frontmen!
Good thing Michael Anthony could sing

dave is like a complete stream of consciousness at 150 miles an hour !!!!....he should leave his brain to science ......i love this guy ,.....
Dave's philosophy about recording is so true. The modern sound with all the click track crap even ruins live performances.
