They also had a returning champions special during Burgo's run in February 1995 (with returning champions dating back as far as at least 1987), which means that February 1995-July 12th, 1996 was the only era in which no one could've possibly returned for a "returning champions" special

The following year there were 2 contestants appeared who broke the record within a couple of months of each other. At the time of this episode, the record was $63,000 in prizes in August 1996.

No offence, but Sandi's not a true champion. She may have won most episodes that she was on, but she didn't solve this end puzzle and I'm pretty sure she only solved 1 of the 8 end puzzles when she was on for the first time in 1996.
Doesn’t matter, it was the total value of the prizes won that mattered. The record at the time was $63,000 set by Donovan Newton in August 1996. Obviously Sandi’s $37,000 was among the highest total winnings of that 1996-2000 era for her to be invited back.
I watched most of the episodes she was on. Did she win the car in any of those episodes? And do you have to win the car to become a champion or not necessarily? How do you know she won $37,000? If she did solve the final puzzle in this episode, I would’ve been happy for her, especially if she spun up the car!
