I'm a native Spanish speaker and learned Portuguese in college. I am fascinated with the Galician language. It's so beautiful. If I may say, it colors and softens spanish to a tone that is kind, welcoming and familiar. God bless the Galician people.

Galician is a beautiful language itself, as many others. And it's sad how people use to see it as an inferior one. I'm a sixteen year-old Galician girl and it's not unusual around here when people talk to me in Galician and suddenly switch to Spanish only because I'm young and because they think I won't understand them. Anyways, they aren't appreciating as much this beautiful and useful language as they should. Tragic. Eu tamén falo galego.

I believe Galicia,Spain to be the original homeland of the majority of the Celtic peoples who later migrated to Ireland,Scotland and even Wales. You could say that we are much like Celtic cousins with a few differences in blood admixtures.I was for so long convinced that I was mostly of Irish and Scottish heritage until i did some family research and eventually took a DNA ancestry test....the results strongly(To my great surprise) showed that my ancestors mostly came from Santiago Galicia, Northern Portugal and even spilling over as far south as the state of Andalusia! Now that i have learned more about the Galician culture ,I want to help preserve this beautiful language of my ancestors! nice to see people are interested....good documentary! (:

Xoan García You are right Xoan.I've really enjoyed studying more about Galician history and culture as well as the language origins.I'm starting to wonder if we Galicians are a mixture of Germanic,Roman,Celtic with Indigenous Iberian tribes... with perhaps a small amount of Norse Viking blood? I'm really interested in knowing what kind of people.. and why (my ancestors) seemed to have stayed primarily in the city of Santiago..what kind of people did that city attract? It's all very interesting!

    • @Steele_Hard

Jules Verne Wrong, actual Portuguese is not Galician, and Galician is not Portuguese since the date they were influenced by none European colonialism, shares the same root, so once were the same language, but not actually, is like to say, German and English are the same language so both shares the same root, a totally no sense

Xoan García Very interesting reading Xoan thanks! I am trying my best to dig deeper into to what makes Galicians unique from the rest of Spain..I will say that many Galicians I have talked to so far have this fierce pride of heritage that is not unlike what I see with the Scotchman or the the Irishman, and for me that is a very "Celtic" trait we share. Also I am still very puzzled about my autosomal DNA test result..most of it showed that Galicia as well as Portugal(Northern)are the populations that I share common DNA with...no sign of Irish or Scottish anywhere even though I have documents of ancestors that were born or moved around in these places. The other half was mostly Slavic,French,Greek.. but also it showed that I am related somehow to the Roma Gypsies of eastern Hungary..which surprised me also! I am going to try to get my parents to take this DNA test and narrow down which side all that Galician and Portuguese DNA comes from...I have a suspicion that it comes from my fathers side. I will keep you updated

I am a Portuguese speaking citizen from Brazil and there are striking similarities between Portuguese and Galician. I also think (and history can proove it) that Galicia was the real craddle of the Portuguese nation and, by extension, Portuguese language.
Brazilian Portuguese is something different from Portuguese .... Portuguese (Português Europeu), but, although sound a little different, are the same language, like American English and British English, saying nothing about the Scots, the Irish and other varieties of the English language.
    Otherwise, the European Portuguese
The funny thing is that, in Brazil, much of the old sounds of the Portuguese language, those of the time when Brazil started to be peopled by Portugueses, where kept alive and so, some of the sounds of Brazilian varieties of the same Portuguese language, are much alike the old Galician source of the Portuguese language - Galician.
Of course, beside Portugueses, negroes, indians, spanish, italians, poles, french, ukranians, sirian-lebaneses, dutches, germans and other peoples who migrated to Brazil, specially between 1850 and 1960 (nearly 6.000.000 people), Braziian varieties of the Portuguese language changed a lot, but kept the old multisecular source, very much ALIKE GALICIAN LANGUAGE.

Gallegos = Brothers to the Portuguese ...The Galician language cannot die out as its also the root of Portuguese. We share Suevi as well as Lusitano Celt blood but the old traditions have been better preserved by the Galicians. If we Portuguese want to find out more about what makes us who we are then we must look to Galicia.

This is a beautiful documentary. I loved what the one woman said about the importance of learning Spanish but also wanting to preserve her native language. There's no reason why people can't be multilingual. Why can't the Spanish government respect Galicians, Catalans, Basques, Valencians, et al who want to speak their own languages too? Thanks Molly for this great documentary!

      You are very confused.
Offical Spanish Goverment papers are issued in every Autonomous Community languages. When the Spanish Government has to tell me something in Galicia, they tell me in Galician. Galician language is obligatory to learn in Galician schools and the same thing everywhere else.
All these people are mostly talking about the Fanco dictatorship era, who indeed didn´t respected the language diversity at all. Don´t be fooled by the radical Catalan agenda, Spain is a very diverse place, and as a Galician I can only say that if my native culture is endangered by some other it is the American culture, not the Spanish one.

IE: we had the Samhain festivity wich is the Celtic origin of the Halloween, and in recent years all the media is trying to *erase* all evidence of this and urging parents and kids to celebrate American Halloween with all that candy nonsense. Or we had teenagers non speaking Galician because its not cool, and is cooler to learn English instead...

Interesting... The words, 'Galicia' and 'Gaelic' are so similar. Gaelic is spoken in Ireland, and has been since the Milesians, or Basques - from Spain, settled in Ireland. These people are of the same heritage. Even the bagpipes and those flat drums are the same musical instruments used in Ireland, Spain and Portugal. The music from both cultures sound the same.

I feel awful seeing they have been oppressed by the Spanish ppl, but I also feel awesome when I see they take pride on their culture and language...

For me it sound like Spanish, although I know that ...

      Saudos.
