What Did Confederate Soldiers Leave Behind at GETTYSBURG??? | American Artifact Episode 32

  • In episode 28 of American Artifact, we told the story of how Fred Pfeffer (who is the great great grandfather of Erik Dorr) accidentally unearthed the graves of soldiers from the 11th Mississippi who died in Pickett's Charge on Day 3 of the Battle of Gettysburg. In this episode, we're telling a little bit more of the story of the Pfeffer collection and how some extremely unique artifacts ended up being left behind by the Confederates after the battle.

It's a good thing Erik took such an interest and decided to turn the collection into the museum so we can all have a chance to see the artifacts in person. Not to mention the additional artifacts he has added. I know he has plans for a bigger space. Can't wait to see that happen.

I'm always staggered by the sheer amount of expended ordnance found on Civil War battlefields. Bullets, shells, shell fragments, cannonballs, cannister shot, you name it.
It's a miracle anyone lived through those battles.

I visited this museum with my wife and children in the 1980s. I've studied the Civil War since I was a kid in the 1960s, and I absolutely fell in love with this place! We also visited President Eisenhower's farm in Gettysburg. I'm a disabled army veteran of the Vietnam War, and I was like a kid in a candy store as I looked over everything on display here. The stories behind the artifacts is what really grabs you. The offense was so far ahead of the defense during the Civil War that most of the battles were nothing but human slaughter.

"When the smoke cleared at Gettysberg" by Sheldon is a good book about the townspeople during the aftermath of the battle. They provided homes and buildings to house and care for the wounded and collected the dead. In following years tours and reunions were held. Interesting anecdotes.

Visited Gettysburg - and the Gettysburg Museum of History - 2 weeks ago, amazing museum, don't know how I missed it before. It amazed me how many residents of the town are so uninterested/bored/sick of the history of the town and battlefield and I wish I could sell my house and move there. I was always quite jealous of folks like he late Chet Small (original owner of the Horse Soldier but I bought relics from him when his shop was a barrn in his back yard) and Mr. Pfeffer who grew up in the area and have an amzaing collection of artifacts. I really love the plates of relics, don't know what I'd give just for that case with relics from each part of the battlefield.

You should be over a million subs by now. I appreciate and respect so much what you do. So many of the place that you have been, I would have never been able to see, certainly not in the way you present it. I wonder if you have ever considered doing a colab or visiting with The Aquachigger, Beau Ouimette. He has a channel here on YT, and is a Metal Detectorist, and a great lover of history and the Civil War specifically. He has a great collection of artifacts that he has dug up over the years, and preserved. I would bet he would take you hunting, show you how to "detect" and show you his collection.
