    Today we have an install of a new JVC Double DIN radio, and with this a new Metra Turbo Touch Digital Touchscreen Control unit. This is a great option for anyone that wants something different than the factory HVAC controls, and moves the actual controls to a digital touchscreen that has buttons as a backup.
    In their place you now have an opening to put in most any Single DIN or Double DIN radio, and in this case we have a JVC KW-V350BT unit that gives you many options including AV inputs, Sirius XM satellite connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity, CD player and much, much more.
    Overall time for us to install this was approximately 5 hours over two days; we would definitely call this a five out of five for difficulty, mainly because of the wiring involved however if you have done radio installations in vehicles and are comfortable with splicing speaker wires this will seem somewhat easier.
    The tools needed for this job include a plastic trim removal tool, a 7 mm socket and ratchet, a pair of wire cutters and wire strippers, and some wire connectors. A few uncommon tools you need would include a way to cut plastic inside the dash (a hacksaw blade is not the best solution here and we used a Chicago Electric Multi-Tool for this), and a micro USB data cable for updating the Touchscreen firmware.
    Make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning!
    Removing the OEM radio and HVAC faceplate is achieved with the plastic trim removal tool and the 7mm socket & ratchet. The two bottom bolts need be removed first, and then the HVAC faceplate can be removed. The OEM radio along with the OEM digital display have 7mm bolts and can be removed, and then each item has electrical connectors that can be removed.
    The single biggest thing that you will spend the most time on with this project is the wiring: from splicing the wires for the radio to speakers, making sure you have the included harnesses that vary depending on if you have a backup camera, built-in navigation to your car, and other details, and in this case running the antenna for the Sirius XM Satellite, you will definitely spend the bulk of your time here, and there is more in the actual video regarding this.
    Once you have the wiring to where you feel confident with it we would definitely suggest you have a friend help of the final spot check/checklist of sorts to be sure everything is good to go; there are a few other prep items like cutting out the plastic bar inside the dash which you will see in the video, putting the new plastic brackets on the Double DIN radio, installing the clips on the new face plate, and checking and updating the firmware is needed in the digital HVAC control unit (The video has more details on this along with the manual.)
    Once you have all your final prep and the wiring completed you can begin the process of finessing all the new items into the dash. This is a great time to read through the manual and plug everything in one final time, and we did a out of dash dry run and turned the car on to confirm all items were working properly before final assembly of everything into the dash.
    Your final product is a very clean and finished looking radio install; The digital HVAC touch screen panel looks similar to the 4-in OEM display however this now gives you digital touch controls (in addition to buttons), and also acts as your video screen for your backup camera if your Fusion has a backup camera.
    All said and done this is a great combination of new controls and radio; The radio has many options and features including the ability to plug in an Android or iPhone for music and hands free calls, and the display itself can be used for various video feeds as there are audio and video inputs on the backside of the JVC unit.

    Nice upgrade. But then anything is an upgrade over Sync.

  • @exception2

    Would be great if you press that INFO button (bottom right of HVAC LCD) and show us what happens. According to Metra, this is supposedly the retained Sync world. But Metra's terrible doc does not go any further into it. After you press INFO, does the screen retain 100% of Ford's 4.2" screen? including phone pairing options and a USB mp3 player? (assuming your factory USB port is still plugged into the APIM, or Sync module)

    Any idea on why both my pioneer stereo and my metra climate control screens shut off? They both shut off then my ac turns on full blast. I've got a 2014 Fusion

    • @freshvintage
      @freshvintage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you updated the firmware? Either that or a wiring issue is my guess, but the screens shutting off and the AC running sounds like the system may still be running.

    I'm having trouble understanding the instructions with my metra 99-5841B dash kit. for example, it says to connect the red wire to the accessory wire of the radio, but my radio instructions dont say which one is the accessory wire. assuming my radio (jvc) uses standard color coding, is it just red to red? it looks like all your connections are same color to same color. I wish you would have shown more of that part in your video 😓

    • @freshvintage
      @freshvintage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael - great to hear you are doing this for your Fusion! Our experience was red to red like you said, and also our # 1 challenge was the wiring and getting it 100% correct (I'd download the radio wiring diagram to be safe). The Metra instructions were okay but could have been better for sure. The Fusion has 4" and 8" screen options, there were Bluetooth and steering wheel controls if I remember correctly, and some Fusions had dual climate control vs. just your standard cold/hot setup. Looking back on it and what I would recommend is finding a local reputable car stereo place that can help with building the wiring harness - again it was our # 1 issue and we got it figured out/bugs worked out but one wrong wire and things are not working. Hope that helps and thank you very much for watching!! ☺️

      @@freshvintage thanks for the quick reply! Managed to test run it out of the dash and everything seemed to work correctly only to find out after putting it in the dash that some of my wiring was not that great 😅 I'll have to pull it out and redo some of the wiring but at least I know I have the correct wires connected to the correct wires. The ones that didnt connect to the same color were at least clearly labeled in both the metra manual and my radio manual

      never mind about my connections, turns out the front speaker output on the radio unit is shot. Might be my fault, might be able to return it anyway. fortunately now that I've already installed it once, the headscratching is over and the next unit should be a piece of cake to install in comparison

      Might be worth it to double check all of your wiring connections too. Not sure a bad wire would cause the hvac screen to go black but it could definitely cause the radio to go black

    • @freshvintage
      @freshvintage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I would go back through every wire connection and pair them up one by one to make sure they are all 100% correct.
      We ended up with both the Metra manual and radio manual side by side, and triple checked each wire to confirm we had it right (and we fixed one or two after we had them wired up).
      If you still do not have power after that reach out to Metra to troubleshoot the wiring as it was a real bear but we got it after a few errors and a wire swap or two - let us know how you make out!

    Hi,
    I’m trying to figure out how to turn on the heat with this type and model but it’s really hard. It just blows out cold air. Can you tell me how to do that?

    • @freshvintage
      @freshvintage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching and great to hear you have this installed! It's quite the installation but worth it - for the hot/cold air functions you will need to dig into the settings in the Metra touchscreen unit as there were 4-5 different variations of buttons for the 2013 Ford Fusion.
      The one we ended up using was for the non-climate control car (our Fusion did not have climate control), and if you are not able to get this working reach out to Metra as they can help quickly diagnose the issue (whether it's a wiring issue or using the right touchscreen layout).
      Let us know what you needed to do to fix it and thanks for watching!
