    TKD is a full contact sport, and I think a lot of people dont appreciate how painful and destructive those kicks can be until they've been in the ring with a good TKD fighter.

    The screaming can be for a few reasons,
    1) To ensure you exhale on impact of your strike.
    2) As an intimidation technique (yes it works)
    3) To announce that you think you have scored a point to the corner judges
    4) As a boost of self confidence to ensure power in the strike
    5) It is tradition to shout even in technical pattern and form work especially at the end of your form (if you don't shout in the correct place in your form you can fail a grading)

    i am a TKD practitioner, and i do quite alot of olypmic style sparring. thank you! you can't judge me by a few words.
    1> i understand that it hard to kick with hands all the way, but keep them half way so the don't have to move long distances to get to your head. in TKD evading in emphasised, but sometimes there's not enough time to move the whole so moving an arm is quicker and easier.
    2> boxers get knocked out by being punched in the head. TKD fighters get ko'd....

  • @dermack1
    @dermack1 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    here is a quick fact: the legs are the strongest part of your body. TKD trains your flexbility, stamina, balance, speed, and power. Every MMA fighter has training in muay thai and brz jiujitsu. But Anderson Silva is one of a kind who did TKD before and that's why he is such a successful fighter in the UFC. In his class right now, he is the most dominant fighter because he uses TKd and no one else does it. So yes it definietely gives him the edge.

    To build upon what perrymikey2 said, a sudden yell or stomp toward your opponent illicits a flinch of varying degrees, depending on your opponent. If someone you're sparring isn't used to it, you can create openings all day with faint and draws.
    @ momtchil I don't think they're in any kind of dojang. It looks like a gym (I see basketball hoops). It's possible a bunch of them brought some equipment to a place where they could just practice in a less stiff environment.

    i go threw the same stuff to i have been doing tkd since i was 8 im 26 now and people are so god damn ignorant about taekwondo we show strength speed and a focus that most people will never truly understand . Moving at a high level of speed with combinations that are amazing most people can only dream to do what we do

  • @devster107
    @devster107 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, it helps in many ways, but when kicking pads it forces you to breath better. It is far more difficult to exhaust yourself when you yell like that. And when taking it hit, it doesn't hurt as much. It's common sense, but if you need proof, here's a test: Inhale a large amount of air and keep it in as you hit yourself in the gut. Now, repeat the process, but this time, exhale right before and throughout the time of impact. Which one hurt less?

  • @scottlee38
    @scottlee38 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well sure you can shout to release air. You can also do like MMA fighters or boxers and breath out through the mouth. Listen during one of their fights you'll hear what sounds like "hissing". its basically an exhale against their mouth guard. Screaming in a high pitched tone wont do you any good unless you ambush the target. Its more of a "knock out risk" seeing as your jaw isn't clenched shut to help resist any random strikes to the face one fails to block efficiently.

  • @AOTFGrim
    @AOTFGrim 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Olympic style tkd would not really be effective outside of tournaments, and I'm not sure it's very effective there either. They sacrifice a lot of technique and power to gain a small amount of speed so they can score points. The same technique when properly executed can be useful in a fight situation. They also cannot use their hands in tournaments, hence the fact nobody is keeping them up. This is a game version of tkd, not the self defense version.

  • @scottlee38
    @scottlee38 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's no way shouting will make anything "hurt less". The only reason one exhales during a strike is for respiratory efficiency, meaning the ability to breath while moving (comparable to jogging). If you feel like roaring as a distraction, go ahead. You MIGHT flinch the person for about a second in the beginning, though a decent MMA fighter would easily work around these taekwondo guys..

    @kusanku999 back in the day when electronic shields werent so prevalent. keeping your hands up to protect your head wasnt such an important thing, now that people try and block the shield and go for the head more with electronic shields in play. keeping your hands up is definitely more important.

    The thing that really messes up taekwondo in a real fight is aside that its not economical in motion like the other effective arts, muay thai, boxing etc. the main kicks used in taekwondo to the mid, the 45 doesnt really hurt anyone 90% of the time because it is mostly like a reaching tool, and you hit with the instep you don't really get the maximum weight unto the target. The only devastating taekwondo kicks are the back kicks, turning longs, but they are telegraphic.

    screaming when u kick helps to breath correctly, and gives more power to kicks, but yelling while standing and doing nothing is just... strange.

  • @perrymikey2
    @perrymikey2 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    for the people like "why do they yell??" and "yelling is stupid.." all that bs. well its been proven that it helps to release as much as 7 times the normal amount of energy in a strike. thats why. :)

    its the same thing with kendo? I dunno if you do kendo as well but they don't score points if you don't kiai when you strike...in taekwondo its the same thing...although electronic scoring is becoming more compulsory and could change all that soon.

    ....for points with pretty much useless arms, then you're setting yourself up to get really hurt or even killed, and you cannot defend your loved ones.
    it doesn't have to be kickboxing, it's simple LOGIC!! if you don't want to get kicked in the head, protect your head. if someone only does TKD, then it's advisable for self defense purposes aswell. it's soo much easier to avoid k.o's if your hands aren't useless appendages flopping by your sides.

    Because everyone is not meant to go risk their life's at war.Alot of people(including myself) would be terrified to go fight.Also martial arts is like a sport,you got to practice hard at it.You can ask alot of martial artist.I guarantee you that most of them have tried some sport at school,or some club,but it probably wasn't their type of training that they want.Some people prefer to go run out in dirt,and train till your just about to past out.Others like to train hard,but not to get so dirty.

  • @AOTFGrim
    @AOTFGrim 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't confuse what this video shows with the art of taekwondo. This is Olympic style taekwondo which has 0 focus on self defense. This is the sport of taekwondo and should not be perceived as anything more than a game.

    ....TKD fighters get knocked out because they get kicked in the head. so why the hell would you want to keep your hands far down, and leave you head exposed all the time. blocking IS allowed, you arms are there for a reason, so USE THEM!!!
    3> IF TKD is the only art you know, then you most likely only do Olympic style sparring, which i do not recommend for self defense purposes. the way you train is the way you'll defend yourself. if all you know is to kick for points with.....

    i'm not saying you're a bad fighter, you're pretty good. but let me make a final point.
    a good TKD practitioner knows the difference between what is for sport and what is for serious combat. if all you do and know is TKD Olympic sparring, then tell me how you plan on defending yourself if all you know is to score points, and can't defend your head which is a vital body part? you don't realise how many k.o's could be avoided if people used their arms. btw, i do Hapkido aswell.

    I am sorry, and i know this is how some people see taekwondo today, but if we did that at my dojang,...my grand master and the other masters, but especially my grand master will come out and kills us all. I mean no doboks, music in the dojang....
    In fact no one will ever do that because we respect the dojang too much.
    I hate to admit it but the only remainings of traditional taekwondo are in dojangs like mine, with old school Korean instructors. Taekwnodo is a martial art! Not only a sport!

    @kusanku999 Sport TKD fighters should not keep their hands up. There is zero worry about head punches, and any good fighter can get his hands up in time to block a head kick. The main worry is body kicks. Therefore, it's smarter to keep your hands down. If you keep your hands up like a boxer, your body is going to get chewed up.
    BTW, you earn the right to keep your hands down. They are baiting their opponents so they can counter. Watch Muhammed Ali and Prince Naseem Hammed. Hands down.

  • @dermack1
    @dermack1 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    this pretty common sense. y wouldnt a heavyweight train TKD? simply because they do not have the flexbility which is the primary focus of TKD. Secondly, they are not really agile neither will they have good balance and stamina. Why waste your time training TKD if you as a heavyweight could train other martial arts that fit your lifestyle. Thats why you see only a few heavyweight TKD fighters.
