Dancing Dewdrop Variation | Nutcracker in the Studio | Kathryn Morgan

  • This is the Dewdrop variation from George Balanchine's The Nutcracker. This is one of my favorite roles in the ballet. It's a joy to dance the waltz of the flowers, and you often feel like your flying (even though there are fouettés!) Enjoy this little bit of Nutcracker in the studio! Filmed 11/1/20.

    Your dancing is so beautiful, but what truly fascinates me is your arms and hands ! They are always so light, willowy and expressive, yet so beautifully and perfectly placed. They are that special magic that gives your performance such an effortless look.
    It never fails to enchant me and inspire me. I'm gonna have to work so hard to manage even a tiniest fraction of that airiness ! And as we are back on lockdown here in France, once again my dance studio is closed and I'll have to work at home...
    But thank you for this beautiful moment and for being such an inspiration.

      Really? If my ballet teacher were still alive (r.i.p.) she'd say her arms look like dead tree limbs... I think her legs look so much better! Her feet are pointed so beautifully! All that aside, though, it was a lovely dance.

      @@phoenixkh93 Don't you know I'm human, too? ...Lol, I had to do that.
      Did you only read the first two sentences? I complemented her feet. I'm being blunt. Dancers need that in order to improve. It is how one takes another person's words to move forward that counts (whether good, bad, or frank).

      @@NightWink129 true, but like first of all she was a soloist in the New York Ballet and then worked at the Miami city Ballet so she had some of the best dance instructors in the world training her. And also you can give someone constructive criticism without being objectively rude. And looking through this comment section it seems like most people think her arm movements are stunning so it could be you are misjudging here

      It's just because the ballet community chooses to cling to some particular body standards of a very thin flimsy and delicate woman. Unfortunately you see that everywhere and not everybody has the genes to reach that. This is very anachronistic and ballet is the opposite of body positive.

    • @ardnas994
      @ardnas994 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      In my opinion she's fit for a ballerina. She might have a bit wider and shorter torso but that's just her body structure, she's skinny enough.

    • @Melissa-cl2rf
      @Melissa-cl2rf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @Cancer Survivor I've never done ballet (except when very little), but I've seen it from afar, binge-watched ballets and ballet classes/schools, etc. And I've noticed that one body type is overrepresented. Is it possible the incredible talents you listed are exceptions that prove the rule? That these people (and their bodies) are publicized so much because they conveniently mask still-present problems? Also, exactly how good did they need to be for companies to overlook their "nonstereotypical" bodies (is this perhaps why all the exceptions are SO "flawless?"- because they need to be)? I agree that the ballet world has changed from what it was, but how, and how much? Is it juuust enough to reap the social benefits of being labeled "diverse?" I dunno.
      Has the ideal ballet body, instead of expanding, just shifted shapes? From how I've heard ballet dancers talk about ballet, their bodies are their instrument so it makes sense that certain types would go in/out of vogue. Honestly I don't know if a discipline as intense as ballet can really exist without also imposing body standards on its practitioners (I'm not even talking about weight - just stuff like flexible/strong ankles, long neck, high instep, etc).

    • @foreverestt3631
      @foreverestt3631 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Personally as a teenager I had the perfect ballerina body, I was asked to join a world famous School.... I could have been a professional but my parents wanted me to get a more traditional education. As a revenge I managed to stay forever in ballet but just as a student and ... now... I am GLAD! I had to be on meds for my total lack of appetite and gained so much weight! My body will NEVER be superthin again. Did it affect my technique? Yes a bit! Can you dance if you r a tall size 6 and full D cup? Yes of course! Had I been a pro though they would have fired me. I saw many girls who were not short, a slender size 6, big boobs, with beautiful lines, charismatic and with a way better technique than many other skinny ones, they looked perfect in a unitard or tutu! So... who cares about the size if you are talented and a partner can lift you??? 🤔
