Which is your favorite? The Balanchine is the most natural to me because that's the one I have been coached in and performed! The first 2 are gorgeous but SO hard. This really gave me an appreciation for all of the styles!
I feel like Grigorovich went "Oh, Sugarplum? One of the hardest variations out there? Let's make it harder." Kudos to you for doing them all in one day, because holy smokes, I would have died. I love seeing the differences between the versions.
The first time I ever saw the Grigorovich choreography it was several decades ago and I just happened to catch the Bolshoi's Nutcracker on TV. It was danced by Natalya Arkhipova and I never realized until I was much older and dancing myself how incredibly difficult that variation is. Arkhipova made it look like a walk in the park.
@@chalkedlines8960arkhipova is the best at this variation!!! you’ll see arguments for nikulina and kaptsova but nothing will best natalya’s grace and fluidity! ❤
The Grigorovich vsersion is always so magnificent. It is definitely my favorite, but it has that, "you must suffer but make it pretty" vibe to it. Russians really do not fool around lol. You did it perfectly!
As a musician, I've always preferred the Grigorovich because it's the one that musically makes the most sense. It aligns with the rhythm the best, and has always been what shows in my head when playing the piece.
I love the Grigorovich variation, but I prefer the Ivanov version because it is the original preserved 1893 choreography. The Grigorovich version is from the 60s, and the Balanchine one is from 50s. The original choreography feels perfect for the character, just like how Petipa and Ivanov envisioned her.
The Ivanov version is the one I'm most familiar with and it just feels like Christmas to me. I love seeing variations in rehearsal clothing more than polished costumed performances because I feel like I can better appreciate the hard work required to make such a difficult variation look so effortless. The Gregorovich version is new to me. I liked the musicality but immediately thought that the pirouettes en dehors after the Italian fouettes completely changing the direction of momentum was just cruel choreography (although pretty)! My favourite part of the Balanchine version is the turning sequence on the diagonal towards upstage left - the arms and head are so beautiful and reminiscent of a snowflake; a calmer snowflake than Balanchine's snow. All 3 versions would be fun to learn, and I would probably enjoy different aspects of the choreography from the perspective of the dancer as opposed to the perspective of the audience.
Grigorovich all the way 😍 I'm a total hack as a dancer but, as a classically trained musician, I feel like Grigorovich's choreography speaks so naturally with the music. It becomes one voice. Not sure musicians are particularly qualified to comment on choreography but that's my personal reaction. Thank you for giving us such beautiful examples side-by-side
I feel like the Grigorovich is made for you! Gorgeous and ethereal. I'm not a dance expert so I don't know what to call this exactly...but it's the way you use your arms and turn, just lovely.
the ending of the video is so real lol i love that you included it because that’s exactly what everyone is like after every class (especially after jumps!!)
Good point! Loved it! It wasn't a huge "ugh" but definitely a real one! You're willing to complain, but only a little, lol! Very relatable, because I was feeling it for you. Clever work!
The Ivanov version is most familiar to me as I did classical ballet as a child and teenager, so naturally it's my favourite. The Grigorovich version looks beautiful but torturous!
I‘ve got to say that the Gregorovich version will always have a special place in my heart because it’s the first version I’ve ever seen but I absolutely LOVED your Balanchine version!! You looked so beautiful and made it seem so easy and flowy, just the Perfect Sugar-Plum Fairy! 🤗💖
I'm always impressed by your ports de bras. Calm, elegant, beautiful lines, never exaggerated. And although it's a cliché and we will be sick and tired of it by December- nothing puts you in the Christmas mood like Nutcracker music! Thank you for sharing these gems with us.
I know absolutely nothing about ballet, but to my untrained eye, the Grigorovich is my favourite. I feel it embraces the playful side of the music more than the other two which are much more ethereal. All stunning though, of course 💖
I think Grigorovich was inspired by a ballerina box toy because the lot turns and fuettes in the same spot. Very doll like this way ❤ I never seen Balanchine version in real life but those finishing turns (idk what it called) going backward in the room is sooo amazing🤩 I love a lot Balnachine's style.
Those Italian fouettés!! 😱 my favorite dancer has done it again!! I can’t get over how incredible you are dancing! Praying I get to see you perform someday 🙏🏻❤️
You have no idea how excited I was for this! The Grigorovich version is my personal favorite but you do them all so well. Amazing job, I know this must’ve been a lot of work!!
I was trained a classical ballet dancer in Canada so I know of what I speak and I say you are a very good ballet dancer. Excellent. Top of the line. Prima.
Definitely the first which you danced so beautifully. It has simplicity with musicality which I love. My second favorite would be the Balanchine version.
Ivanov is definitely my favourite, because I think it matches the music best in my eyes. That said, phewww Grigorovich is impressive. I do like the quicker tempo of the Balanchine version, it lends itself to the lighter, spritely-er movements that really emphasize that she's a *fairy*
I'm with Grigorovich, which is a wonderful take on the music. Thank you for wearing traditional shoes, and keeping a traditional line to the toes. You are a pleasure to watch, and I congratulate you on your successful Christmas freelance season. Your Sugarplum performances have been very moving.
Balanchine is my favorite, but others are pretty too! I was lucky enough to be taught by THE Darci Kistler at SAB for pointe and she taught us the forward turn sequence you do so beautifully at 6:30 - it's something I'll never forget!
So first of all, I remember saying you were not a technician a while back. You mastered all the different versions beautifully. Combine that with your musicality and artistry. I love the joy you bring to your dancing. I love Balanchine I think because it was the first ballet I ever saw on TV (yes I’m dating myself). Gelsey Kirkland dancing. You were every bit as lovely. I’m so happy to see you flourishing.
Katie, they were all beautiful! The last time I danced the Nutcracker, I was Clara, which was a lifetime ago for me, around 1978. I danced it every year, in a variety of roles, since I was around 7 years old or so. I grew up dancing with the Brunswick Arts company, and they always did the classical version, so that is the version I was used to. Although, all three that you danced were stunning, I really love the Bolshoi on you!! There is just something about the steps, the flow of steps, and I guess the whole choreography, that just makes you sparkle! You are a beautiful dancer, and the Bolshoi calls your name! ✨🩰
Beautiful dancing! My favourite is the Balanchine as I think it’s a better fit with the details of the music, especially the end section. Thank you for a morning dose of grace and inspiration, Kathryn 💕🌸🩰
I honestly love the Ivanov version the most! It’s the one we were taught at our school, and there’s something to be said about subtlety of the choreography that makes it so beautiful but SO hard! I never knew how hard it was until I started reading about it and seeing other dancers’ opinions on it and then figuring out “oh maybe that’s why I’m always winded afterwards”
The Grigorovich variation will forever be my favorite. The first time I watched it I kept the video on replay for days. It’s the hardest one of the three and I feel like it looks like the dancer is making the music with her body as it goes. I have never seen it performed live, hopefully one day I’ll see the Bolshoi doing it
I liked the Grigorovich version,!,!!!!!!! It is very challenging and you did it beautiful 🤩 thank you for the performance !!!! The Balanchine version is lovely guided or inspired by the music and it’s very enjoyable to watch!!!!👏👏👏👏👏bravo 👏👏👏👏👏
Grigorovich all the time! But wtf, how do you manage to do all three, and so wonderfully???? I am so impressed- have watched several Bolshoi performers online , doing their thing, and not as perfectly as you!!! Wow. Am speechless. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you for showing all three versions in one video. I love the ballet and especially the Sugar Plum Fairy. I love the look on your face at 7:06. That love of dancing shines through! Priceless.
Wow that was amazing you nailed all of them! My personal favourite is the Grigorovich version, it just looks so pretty and playful and just the most “fairy-like“ to me 😊
Just WOW! Seeing you dance three so different versions in such a short timeframe and doing them all so well is just impressive. The first version will probably always be my favourite simply because it’s the one I saw first. Seeing them all together like this, what stands out to me the most is how they all pick up different aspects of the music and character.
As someone who dreamed about being a ballerina but never became one, and there for has very little knowledge about the technicalities of Ballet, my clear favorite was the Grigorovich variation. I felt like it translated the music into dance the best and felt very etheral.

Balanchine’s will always be my favorite lol, I feel like the quick flitter like choreography best fit the music, but the other ones are so amazing to watch and are mesmerizing
Agreed! I've always felt like Balanchine's understanding of how rhythm and music fit together was so strong. A lot of times other versions of this dance can seem chaotic and not well put together. Like the choreography is chasing the music instead of blending with the music.
@@RLBM89 I second this. There is something about non Balanchine versions where even when they are exactly on the music they some how aren't on the music. I don't know how to describe it other than I find myself coming out of the story because it just feels off.
All three variations highlight your gorgeous musicality which I adore in a dancer! One can have all kinds of technical skill and extensions up the wazoo but it’s the expression and musicality that makes one a true artist! Beautiful, you are such a pleasure to watch! I grew up watching the classic version in Fernand Nault’s Nutcracker with Les Grands Ballet Canadiens in Montreal so it has a special place in my heart! 😘

I was blown away by your performance of the Grigorovich version. I think that one is my favorite, it really suits you! But of course, you still excel in the other two versions
I like the first 2 the most; I'm not much of a Balanchine gal. But my favorite part of your video is the very end where you huff emphatically at having completed the task! It's so good to know that all ballerinas do that, even the famous ones!
Wow!! You look so stable and strong, and so beautiful!!! Loved seeing the differences in the variations! I love all of them, but the passé section in the Balanchine one as opposed to a manege is gorgeous!

This is so beautifully performed!! Really made me appreciate how different the styles were.. the bolshoi version seemed the hardest. I'm always so thrilled to see a new post! Kathryn Morgan is my idol.
My personal favorite choreographer for the Nutcracker is Pär Isberg actually, who's made a beautiful mashup between Nutcracker and a famous Swedish Christmas story. All of these are beautiful though!
You're amazing and such an inspiration! You're still dancing! And you could definitely join any company you wanted to as a soloist! I can't wait to have you in the jury on Saturday!
You were so fantastic in all of them! I don't know how anyone pulls off all those really hard moves! I could never do hops on pointe in attitude arabesque.

LOL "you must suffer but make it pretty" is seriously their motto. Gorgeous choreography tho
No wonder Russian ballet is the best in the world...
