Merveilleuse Canellakis ! Elle a tout le profil d'une future très grande cheffe d'orchestre : A voir son style de direction, on croirait à une résurrection de Bernstein au féminin ! Merci, Karina, pour le plaisir et la joie que tu m'apportes, longue carrière à toi !

Not so often are Sibelius Symphonies played nowadays. Every time I can hear one of them it is sort of a celebration. So also this one, his 3:rd symphonie with its clarity, yet with the signum that Sibelius puts on all his works. And with wonderful orchestration where all instruments comes to full potential. And Karina Canelleakis brings out that to the outmost. Thank you! I am sitting here with tears in my eyes, listening to the wonderful second movement. And then the third movement comes and brings this to fullfillment. A triumph march.

I have to admire Karina Canellakis for her work with this orchestra! She is so good in letting them know what she wants, and the orchestra responds easily. Together they are a team that makes Sibelius fully alive again.

The sound quality in this is amazing! Maybe it is because of this Covid-19-arrangement, where all the musicians sit apart from each other? Anyway, this is a wonderful uptaking, with wonderful Karina Canellakis as the conductor. It will stay in my mind as one of the top performances of Sibelius symphonies.

Sibelius' 3rd Symphony is my personal favourite, albeit not as famous as his 1st; 2nd and 5th. I first heard this symphony in full when listening to my iPod on a train journey from Helsinki out to the western city of Turku where I visited the Sibelius Museum. This is a wonderfully clean and precise rendition which beautifully transmits the landscape of Finnish life and environment.

A delightfully energetic and heartfelt performance of a happy Symphony [Sibelius' No. 3]. It was not only a pleasure to watch conductor Karina Canellakis' gestures, but her expressive face. One would not be wrong, I think, to suggest that she really enjoys conducting. The camera work was excellent: Responsive to the fullest to the musicians who played a segment, and moving imperceptibly from cut to cut. I expect that we'll hear a lot more from and about Ms. Canellakis in the future. She is, if I may say so, a musicians' conductor, and the excellent musicians of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest responded to her terrifically. Thanks!

    • @LuizBHMG

The second movement of this 3rd symphony is maybe the only one I don't like in the entire Sibelius' symphonic repertoire. For me, it's too boring and repetitive, even if it indeed sounds good. ;) The first and the third movements are astounding! Because of them, this is the first symphony by the composer in which he shows his style as a unique one, although his first symphonies are majestic as well.

    • @staffanolofsson8201

@@LuizBHMG Funny, I like your arguments. Yes, repetitive, I agree, but boring, not the least. It we skip all music that is repetitive, well, not so much will be left. Schoenberg, and so on, But I like also the first and the third movements in this symfonie, as you do, so there we agree! But the second drive us apart. Greetings from Sweden.

@@staffanolofsson8201 yes, I know that the second movement is the most popular one in this symphony and it has indeed a beautiful melody in G# minor. But I think once you hear a piece of music dozens of times, the parts that are more repetitive and simple start getting boring even being beautiful. :( The first movement is more like a development that always go in one direction and has a rich polyphony. The third one starts like a scherzo almost atonal and suddenly morphs into a triumphant ending in C major where many motives appear with different types of symmetry like in nature. At the end, the violins make an ostinato sounding almost like an echo and the oboes and horns hold on the motives and then it finishes in C major after some modulation. Exactly, there we agree! ;) What other symphonies by Sibelius do you like? Hälsingnar från Tyskland (jag är från Brasilien egentligen) :)

Social distancing has shaken up music-making generally. The players seem to listen more so the ensemble is better. In the first movement, I wish Karina Canellakis would think in longer phrases - like Sibelius. The arms are tense. There's too much frenetic beating time. She needs to trust the orchestra more . . .
