  • I returned to GD in March 2023 after 5 years out of sheer boredom and after Shuori showed me the GDDP I quickly surpassed anything I had beaten before, until I had another big data loss. I decided not to quit and instead switched to arrow key and started MELTDOWN (why 71-100 and 66 - 100 have no texture pack), with my hardest being Dance Massacre.
The level always felt doable and enjoyable despite it being far above my skill level. After a bit over a week, I had 48 - 100 as well as 46%, but I lost interest over Summer and barely played the game. Some sporadic practice at the beginning of September got me 58%, meaning I had the level in 2 runs, but I got busy with school and didn’t do much GD until mid-October, and no MELTDOWN at all.
I played and improved when I could up until December, where on the 4th with megahack v7 and 240 bypass I randomly got 59-100 on Apache and then 29-100 on MELTDOWN right after with 37-100 later. I then committed to beating Apache over Christmas (which was derailed slightly by 2.2’s release), which would have meant there was nothing between me and MELTDOWN, but the physics changes seemed to make that impossible.
After I realised that 72% was still possible, I called up Shuori and went from 0, and got 69%. Once I made it past the 57% miniwave from 0 I knew I could do it since I had overpracticed the last third of the level. After 48-100 the next day I knew I wanted to do it before 2024. I got to 99 demons, and at 1am on the 30th of December I had my first attempt past the ship after 69% and died at 92%. I was prepared for a death at 90% or 92% given they are a tight release and awkward transition click, but I was not ready for the nerves I felt from the ball onwards, which is what caused pretty much all my late deaths.
I slept on 92% and had two sessions in the afternoon, with 82% and 87% showing me I had the consistency, and when I came back in the evening I tried again, the boy Madhav randomly called me to talk about work and maths, and I pulled through. The completion was more of a test of nerves, consistency, and mindset by the end. Fluking from 69% would’ve been insane, but I’m happy with how it turned out and I earned the victory (I was so early on the last triple spike lmao).
My next extreme will probably be Cataclysm, and hopefully I’ll beat Bloodbath at some point in the future.
    THE LEVEL
This is my favourite level I’ve beaten. The beginning is easy for an extreme, but it’s fun and doesn’t drag on. The first wave is challenging but got very consistent, as with the first UFO once you learn the click pattern.
The main drop with the 4x speed ship however is hardest part of the level, and what made me stop playing it for months at a time. I eventually used visual and audio cues and it got pretty consistent by the end, but so many attempts ended there, and it felt insurmountable for ages. If you pass the first clicks, the straight-fly or brutal click and release of the dual ship is bound to, and even if you pass the dual you still have the tight and finicky gravity change mini ship next.
The 4x speed mini wave and ball maze are both very consistent and satisfying to do, with the wave especially bridging the gap between good progress and a run with promise, since the last third is extremely fair and consistent, and captures the excellent building of intensity throughout the level. The cube is satisfying, the ball has some tricky timings but flows well, the UFO is click-synced, whilst the wave itself isn’t that hard save for a few clicks, but tests your resolve before the triple which might just be the perfect way to end this sort of level.
Mastering the beginning and figuring out the ship was the biggest hurdle, and once I managed that the path forwards was clear. I love the deco and the structuring of the gameplay, and that’s why I rate this level so highly. The only thing I’d change is the ship since dying to it so often can be annoying, but I never got frustrated in the process of beating this, not even after 92%.
I’d recommend this as a first extreme or just a level to beat for anyone good enough.
