    I'm really glad that Thiem got through to his first Slam victory, even if the circumstances and uneven match quality were anything but optimal. If nothing else, Thiem amply demonstrated in this final that he's developing the mental strength to stand against any player. A VERY gutsy performance, if not one of his prettiest or most commanding. I was shocked when he went down 2 sets at the outset, and, as a fan, very nervous for his chances. I have seen nothing, in terms of post-match commentary or press, and this is one of those matches where I really have to wonder what might have been factoring into the play - on both sides, but particularly for Thiem. Injury? Just nerves? Regardless, he came through, and huge props to him!

    • @HopeEsleim1101

      Yeah, well said. Surely tons of nerves, weariness, and some injury. Gutsy is the way to put it.

      He hurt his Achilles in the previous match and was obviously cramping close to the end. The cramps were probably brought on by nerves, he had a much tougher draw at the AO this year and was still pretty fit throughout the 5-set final.

    • @andrewdipta69

      Agree
      In the first set and a half Thiem was too slow in movement. I was watching the match and nearly hopeless. But kudos to him trying to get out of his worry about his body, pressure and everything and win the match. In 5th set tiebreak, he stepped up the game and managed the belief that he can win the match and he did. What an amazing final.

    • @clemensk.2643
      @clemensk.2643 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      In the Austrian media he explained that it was purely nerves, not the injury. He didn't want to admit it before but Djokovic being out was a major factor for him getting more and more nervous towards the end of the tournament. Obviously, this could have been a now-or-never opportunity for him. I'm sure he'll be more relaxed and on better form in Grand Slam finals that are hopefully still to come.

    • @andrewdipta69
      @andrewdipta69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@clemensk.2643 Both physically and mentally really tough. He knew that most people will put pressure on him for winning the title without the big 3. I'm sure this title is a breaking through for him so now he's ready to conquer another slam. No need to hear about "no big 3" or whatever.

      IMO, I think Zverev will be like Cilic or Delpo. If the draw opens up for him, he'll have a shot at more GS titles, but I don't see him as a 'fighter' the way Thiem is. I think the next great rivalry is going to come from Thiem, Tsitsipas, Medvedev and FAA & Sinner in a few years.

If he had won that five set he would be the champion with more set lost in a tournament in history? I remember Gaudio (2004 FO) and Federe (2017 AO) both lost 7 sets through the entire tournament. Zverev was 8 after the fourth set. He is young but need some time and urgently needs to improve his second serve

    I'm so done with some people keep saying that this final is bad because ofthe absence of the big 3. The big 3 this the big 3 that. Is it anyone's fault that Nole didn't make it to the final? Is it anyone's fault that Rafa & Rog not there? Nonsense people.
    I was watching the match at 4 am in the morning and it was really a thriller. I knew if Thiem could win the 3rd set then it would be him to be the winner. Even Thiem was not there in the first set and a half, but his eyes shown the belief that he could win the match. Thiem was a little worry about his physical condition so that's why his movement and his shots were just off at the beginning of the match. In the 3rd & 4th set he managed to free himself and not to worry about everything. In the final set he felt his body a bit painful but still managed to stay up there and produced great shots when needed to. He deserved it because of the never give up spirit and attitude from 2 sets down and a break, injury and nerves. In the end, i was so happy that i witnessed a memorable match like this.

      Andrew Thank you! I do like Federer and Nadal but it gets boring when the Big 3 keep winning. I was actually happy to see Thiem win, because with his consistent performances against the Big 3, it was only a matter of time before he would win a major title. He never gave up and it paid off, and I believe he will keep going further from here with possibly more major title wins to come. I’m proud of Zverev for fighting hard as well.

    Thiem was down 2 sets and a break in the 3rd set, and how he miraculously turned around the match was amazing. He knew that if he didn't when this, he would have been 0-4 in grand slam finals, and if he would make another one, it most likely would have been against novak or rafa, and we all know who wins those matchups. I only hope that thiem keeps improving, because I know he has not reached his full potential, and when he does, he can win more grand slams. Even though zverev lost, he played well for the first 2 and a half sets, for his first grand slam final. Zverev needs to improve more physically and mentally, and if he does, then I feel he will have more chances to win grand slam titles.

    The occasion got to Zverev in the end; it was his first slam final and when he got close to achieving it, he started to play to not lose instead of playing to win, which let Thiem back in. Thiem did lift his game up but not by a huge amount. He was mentally more stable in the end though, since he had already been to 3 Finals. Pretty sure Zverev will learn from this loss and hope he will win a Slam in the near future since he has the potential to play some great tennis.

He hurt his foot/ankle against Medvedev, but it didn't appear to be bothering him at all in this match, and if we're talking about cramping, both of them were suffering towards the end. Imagine you're on your chance to win the GS, with some records were against you. If that were me, i'd want every bit of my days before final went smoothly. For example, in semis i'd like to beat my opponent 3-0, as quick as possible. USO final 2013, if i remember correctly, nadal had an easy semi win, while djokovic had a gruelling war against wawrinka. In final, djokovic lost because he was thought to be 'in a hurry' to finish the point.

    if Zverev played the same way and served the same way like the first two sets he would have probably taken the title.
    But serious credits to Thiem with being two sets down and trying to find the rhythm and his natural free power game and immense mental strength to get back up and at the end the physical strength needed to get past the line in tie break is just inspiring..

      Rahul Dev I think he is hitting or is about to hit the peak of his career. Considering that he beat Nadal and how close he got to beating Djokovic at the Australian Open, I think he’s definitely been evolving his game over the past year. It’s definitely seen when he won Indian Wells, in that such an achievement at Masters 1000 level was probably a sign that a Grand Slam title was next. Djokovic even said in his winner’s speech at AO that Thiem would win several Grand Slam titles, so it’s clear that even the Big 3 know that he can go far. Winning the US Open will definitely lead to a boost of confidence for Thiem now that he achieved his one lifelong dream, and that could inspire him to beat the Big 3 at major tournaments on a more regular basis. It would definitely be exciting if he was to beat Nadal at RG.

    • @nicholetheotter1957
      @nicholetheotter1957 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rishbahpandey8697 I mean he could beat Rafa at RG in coming years. Domi was very burned out by the time RG came around due to a combination of fatigue, a tough draw and not much time to prepare for the transition to clay after the US Open. That’s probably why Rafa got such an easy run to the title this year, but he is showing his age and may not dominate as much as he used to. RG will be back to its usual slot in 2021, and Domi will likely be back to his usual dominant form, so I do think we’ll see an exciting new chapter in that rivalry unfold.

    I think Dominic was stressed out in the first 2 sets because he had a BİG chance of winning his first Grand-Slam title because of the disqualification of Novak Djokovic. (Which I think he could beat Novak if they had played a match) I mean he reached a couple of Grand-Slam finals before but those were against the top ATP players on the world. Of course Zverev is a brilliant player and i really think that he will accomplish so much more, but he is still young and i don't think that he's at the same level with Dominic yet. So I think that he had a huge advantage but he was so stressed he wasted it at the first 2 sets. Anyway I wish the best for those 2 and i think it was a great match, like if you agree.

    I reckon Thiem's performance in the first two sets stems from the fact that for the first time, he is the favourite to win the slam. In the previous 3 slam finals, he had always been up against either Djokovic or Nadal in their best tournament and surface and was therefore never the favourite. This is shown by the performance he made in the Australian final against Djokovic. At the Us, he was 0-3 in slam finals and was given his biggest opportunity yet against none of the big four and being the favourite knew it was his match to lose this time around. Despite all this, though the tennis was not exactly his best, his mental fortitude to come through and win will hopefully propel him to win more at a higher level in the years to come.
