    This is great stuff. I love how unified their sound is; the chemistry... they're a real band. Not just a bunch of great musicians playing as much as they can. Brilliant compositions and playing!

    This band rocks (all of them are great jazz musicians). The more I listen to matt's music the more I love it. His super fat kind-of-low-mid guitar tone is beautiful and his contemporary jazz style is outstanding and original ... and so his compositions

      +331paradiddle You don't need to be an artist to have an opinion about art. You most likely have an opinion about politics but aren't necessary a politician.

    • @331paradiddle
      @331paradiddle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +bubsadoozy Yea but it helps if you know what you're listening to. To dismiss something as "terrible" that you have no understanding of is just close minded. I don't understand avante garde paintings but I don't call them shit either because I don't have the depth of understanding to make such an ignorant statement

    • @331paradiddle
      @331paradiddle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +bubsadoozy Would you agree that to reach this level of competence takes years and years of hard work and practice. I have tons of respect for someone who dedicates their life to an art form. I have a problem with morons who just call something garbage that they have no clue what they are talking about. If you don't like it, fine but if you want it call it garbage then I feel obligated to put my 2 cents in as well to defend what I know is someones life passion.

      I always come back here to listen to the first tune again, i really really enjoy it! I think i don't really like the others, but that's ok, they are not bad at all, even if i just like the first one.
      They are very young musicians, no playing standards which is actually uncommon and if they have created already such a good tune as the first, then they're probably going to do a lot more of good music in the future. They are still in development.
      Oh and i do complain about the thing with the volume hahahaha.

    • @rachybaby72
      @rachybaby72 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manualvarado2212 "Very young musicians"?? Matt Stevens is almost 40. Don't mistake them playing _AT_ a college for _ATTENDING_ a college. They've all(?) made a name for themselves in the Jazz world, touring with musicians such as John Scofield, Esperanza Spalding, and Nicholas Payton, (EDIT: and Roy Hargrove, God rest his soul. And I know at least one of them, Clayton, was nominated for a Grammy a few years ago for his own album..though, yes, Grammies mean nothing). These ain't children, in any sense...

I like the melodic way Stevens uses arpeggio's then gives you a quick shot of the fast flurys, and clayton blows my mind with that Fender Rhodes . If it's find it distracting, close your eyes and listen - it's a great band. Gerald Clayton is fantastic and keeps getting better.

    quite true. once you get that short delay chorus things going, it is really hard to distinguish yourself from Pat, who pretty much single handedly established his tone as the default ,standard modern Jazz guitar sound. This player does have his own thing going, actually very prolific to my ears but does take some conscious effort to listen unbiased .

    i suppose the knob is an effect, something like reverb or echoes, and i think he modulates such signal, and every part of the first part he likes to do that, maybe the effect can not be appreciated in the recording. I think as a musician.

      +lee95757 First time hearing this guy and, as many have noted, Metheny is obviously a huge influence. He's even emulating Pat's mannerisms. The whole "touch the volume and/or tone knob every once in a while" thing is certainly a Metheny staple. This guy's just making a caricature of it. (To be fair, I actually feel like in this instance he does it a lot as a nervous gesture, he seems pretty timid here.) His sound, the look of his guitar, his overall posture and mannerisms, all very reminiscent.
      Cool music though, just bothers me a bit to feel like I am looking at an impression of someone. He's definitely got some ideas of his own though, it all just goes through that filter and I can't un-hear/un-see it.
