OH, what a GLORIOUS and WONDERFUL SINGER! NOT since I heard Pav sing live in 1975 have I been so thrilled! It is early to predict whether this voice that has been touched by God will dominate the future of opera, but there is one thing for sure, what he is now is the greatest hope we have that opera will continue into the 22nd century! And he has that unique and unmistakable charm and presence that makes a singer a star! May all this come true for our beloved Juan Diego Florez!
That was the longest applause I have ever heard! Is he crying when they are applauding him? If I was him or the audience I will start sobbing with joy to hear such beautiful opera.
Very well said. The standards have decresed gretly. What is really sad is that the public as a whole have no clue of what they are listening to. If theycould hear Wunderlich, Gedda. Caruso, Gigli ,and Bjorling live in the theater they would really know how much the standards haven fallen. There are wonderful recordings of course. i just wish that more people would take the time to listen to the truely great singers and understand what great singing is all about.
Maestro Juan Diego Flórez I hope that I can see you perform in REAL LIFE and that we will be great friends. Also, you are the BEST and my inspiration and hero to sing this type of opera, and lastly Hopefully that I can sing this Opera someday on stage. :D
I actually heard him when he made his debut in the Knight Concert Hall in Miami,Fl a 2 weeks ago,(if you haven't made a point to go, just go for the performing art center...it's absolutely amazing!!), he gave 6 encores!!Very generous man!!Undoubtedly a true, grateful, and "old school" tenor!!!
Florez is repeating this role at the Met in April 2008. You should see how many seats are already sold out. He sang Tonio at Milan this year and performed an encore! First encore at Milan in 76 years.
I guess that's why millions of people stand up to him and applaud and only few good-for-nothing envious nerds who haven't accomplished anything in life trash talk (not criticize) him.
This sequence is so fun to watch. I also love to watch and hear Florez singing this aria. I think he has a lot of presence, as it was said below. By the way, I'm very picky and hard to convince. "Boring" is not a term that comes to my mind when I see Juan Diego Florez singing this aria (and playing on the stage).
La fille du régiment o The Observer, Sunday 23 May 2010 .... “As her shy, knobbly-kneed boyfriend Tonio, Juan Diego Flórez returned to wow us with those famous top Cs and pure, unsullied vocal gymnastics. Only Pavarotti, in living memory, could make it all sound so similarly effortless...”
Giovanni, would you be so kind and show us your colourful singing? Stop your attack... I heard JDF myself and he´s had something called glamour. I wish you had the same and I am ready to be your fan as well. Good luck! I might encouraged you to show yourself!
I've got to agree with you, LejeuneWerther. I'm ready to hear Giovanni sing the way he says he does. What I do not get is that many that are here DO listen to the great singers of the past and on a daily basis. Just chalk it up to you not having a preference for Florez's way of singing. It is like the whole Sills/Sutherland debate or Tebaldi/Callas. I used to find Florez dramatically disappointing, but he had everything he needed in spades at the Met performance on Saturday. #1 Tonio in my book!
He is leggiero, whereas Pavarotti was lyrico-spinto. You are right, they can't be compared, Florez too protested against this. But Pavarotti himself said Florez was his successor.
...but I will say this--his agility is very impressive, but I was somewhat bothered to not hear as much warmth in the voice. Although, within the 'encore set', his voice did become warmer. i enjoyed the encores far more! Irregardless, he's the 'tenore' of the 'international moment' and rightfully so!!! What a gift---Peruvians should be extremely proud!!!
Sorry, i accidently added a p to giuseppe Di Stefano. Anyway the tenors I lisyed below are the greatest tenors of the age and as a matter of fact for all ages.
I think you might like to hear a soprano that is a voice in one billion ..that is a true soprano..check out radu Marion singing ave maria..please let me know what you think ..
Check out the webpage of the Met Opera. I think they have a section on dress code. Evening dress is most probably the best choice. And so, yes, long dress is probably the best choice. No jeans unless you are Madonna (and even then, bad choice).
I would suggest that you listen to Pavarotti sing the same aria on You Tube and you will see what I am talking about. Juan Diego Florez is not a distinguished singer. You should also listen to the these singers on You tube as well. They are Enrico Caruso, Jussi Bjorling, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, and Giuseppe Di Stephano to hear what real singing is.
why don't you reveal yourself by singing this exact aria and maybe then we can respect your opinion. his voice is bearutiful. he hits those high c's like butter.
My god!! That what I call "Envy", but If you don´t know the Opera and the Argument (and what king of voice have to be to this role and why) don´t write something like: "Sounds like a boy"
I am a prfessional singer myself and know voice. You would be shocked if you knew my true identity. i suggest that you listen to the great singers of the past.Listen for the color in the voice, even vocal line, effortless top, diction, and if the singer is getting into the heart and soul of the character. Juan Diego florez is not a singer that they will be talking about 100 years from now or even twenty.
Well, this opera calls for a light tenor, a belcantista, like the Barber of Seville and many others. This aria would kill Placido Domingo, Lauritz Melchior, Corelli, del Monaco, Caruso or any helden- or dramatic tenor with voices supposedly "manlier" than Florez's.
Quel bonheur de l'écouter
this guy has a fabulous voice. he seems to be 'in role. he is very handsome. the complete package. the voice fits the role. wonderful.
Juan Diego is the best one today.Fitting successor of Maestro Pavarotti.

Oh Juan Diego, your mother must be SOOOOOO proud! To receive an ovation like that; truly brought tears to my eyes.
Bravo!.
For my Juan Diego Florez he is the best light tenor of all the ages.
Placido Domingo.

That was the longest applause I have ever heard! Is he crying when they are applauding him? If I was him or the audience I will start sobbing with joy to hear such beautiful opera.
OH to have been at VSO for this performance! That is an audience that does not give away ovations. Bravo!

Wow -- how have I missed this guy? I think I have a new favorite tenor... Fabulous performance!
I am very excited to have tickets to see Florez and Diana Damrau in "La Fille du Regiment" at the SF Opera in late October.

Every time he sings, it's always perfect, wow, juan diego, you're so incredible !!!
bravissimo!!!!! Happy New Year!!!

He has a nice tenor I aspire to sing like him one day
Beautiful just beautiful nevet tire of hearing him sing this
I guess that's why millions of people stand up to him and applaud and only few good-for-nothing envious nerds who haven't accomplished anything in life trash talk (not criticize) him.
What a tenor, what an OVATION Ah Mes Amis !!!!!!
Es demasiada la emocion!!! Bravo!!!
I saw the performance last October at the San Francisco Opera. I was in the front balcony and the tickets were $60 each.
I have the oportuniti of to know Juan Diego, in lima, its' very exited listening.. when he sing... than you Juan Diego.... Iam Jonathan Martinez
magnifico, no me canso de escucharlo
Although Pavarotti's voice is imprinted in my brain for every aria I hear, I am beginning to love Juan Diego!
Perpulchrum, suavissimum, iucundissimum. Gratias magnas Vobis ago pro hac videotaenia. :-)
He is the Best!!!! Bravissimo!!!

that is a monstrous applause
Historical performance!
awesome performance, it takes a lot of skill to move around a lot while singing this
very humble ending. perfect performance
He got the record for the longest applause later in another performance , 15 minutes! But the video is not on youtube...
Legendario
j'adore!
JDF cantara en Lima en Mayo 2011 - El Barbero de Sevilla!
Absolute top!
omg,he is the beast, techique so good...
Yes -- about 2 and a half minutes -- from a Viennese audience that doesn't give it away.
Wunderschön!!
that role, that aria, were made for him

wow... did he really get to take a bow during a live performance? that's awesome
Vienna State Opera. I have seen another performance of the run there, he repeated the whole aria.
dear god that's a long ovation
He is the best :)
Giovanni, would you be so kind and show us your colourful singing? Stop your attack... I heard JDF myself and he´s had something called glamour. I wish you had the same and I am ready to be your fan as well. Good luck! I might encouraged you to show yourself!
Pavarotti was known as a master of this aria.
I agree, and would also add some tenors like Wunderlich, Gedda, Kraus and many others to hear what great tenors sound like.
I've got to agree with you, LejeuneWerther. I'm ready to hear Giovanni sing the way he says he does. Alejandro Granda, Luis Alva and Juan Diego Florez are peruvian, in TH-cam.

in that case go check out radu marion ave maria... one of the best i heard so far
Hey cool, me too!
I agree.
do you mind me askin how much they were? and where are u seeing him ? i would love to him myself!
Sorry, i accidently added a p to giuseppe Di Stefano. Anyway the tenors I lisyed below are the greatest tenors of the age and as a matter of fact for all ages.
@zegermans750 yes, and from an audience that doesn't give them away.
UN PERUVIANO PER IL MONDO
I agree
I think you might like to hear a soprano that is a voice in one billion ..that is a true soprano..check out radu Marion singing ave maria..please let me know what you think ..
Is there any way you can show me that video? I would really like to see it.
I really do respect his extraordinary talent, but never enjoyed such light voices.
I think you've stated your opinion, Fabulous Giovanni, quite enough times on this thread. Knock it off.
i STRONGLY doubt it.
Actually his soft palate is somewhat closed off due to increased nasality, a technique used in pop singing to artificially enhance the resonance.
KABRONSISIMO!!!!!

They are in the score or you can just count them as you hear along; 4 + 4 + 1 = 9
lo aplaudieron 15 minutos ..
why don't you reveal yourself by singing this exact aria and maybe then we can respect your opinion. his voice is bearutiful. he hits those high c's like butter.
which community opera was this?
Is Ah Mes Amis sung in Italian or German?
L Bolanos French
He may actually be able to pull it off...he had a great top. But it would sound extremely strange. GENERAL TONIO!
My god!! That what I call "Envy", but If you don´t know the Opera and the Argument (and what king of voice have to be to this role and why) don´t write something like: "Sounds like a boy"

But does not the role demand precisely a boyish voice? You do not want someone which appears to be in his 50s.

Die ganze Oper ist eine komoedie
Great, but Luciano is still my man.
I don't get it...Corelli is great but has a completely different voice...Can you imagine Corelli's spinto voice singing Tonio?
