  • In this final episode the canal is re-watered, pump failure causes flooding around the new sump, the Marina entrance is re-opened, and the temporary dams are removed.
    As part of the Canal and River Trust’s (CRT) Winter Works programme, Culvert 9, which passes beneath the canal on the Leicester Summit Section of the Grand Union Canal at Yelvertoft Marina is to be replaced due to a leak into it. This work commenced on 15th November and will last until 17th December.

    A unique start to finish replacement of a drainage channel beneath the canal. It has been really interesting, so thank you for sticking with it through some terrible weather conditions.

    Thank you very, very much. I found this series fascinating. There's so much more involved in the canals than just cruising. As a land lubber, I would never have known about repairing a leaky culvert, and all the work and expertise needed. Congratulations to the work crew, and thanks again for the videos.

    That was a superb mini series documenting the repair of a broken canal and the work involved in fixing the issue. Now that the job is finished, everyone can get back to living life as normal, as normal can be. Especially in these dark days. 👍
    Well done Alan. Thanks for the time spent making this film for us.

    Great documentary series Alan, really well filmed and researched. Who knew plugging a hole in the canal could prove so fascinating? I don't envy the guy who got to 'swim' across the canal to retrieve some of the equipment while they were clearing up. The contractors deserve a lot of credit for letting you have so much access to film and for explaining things. That sort of openness is a rare commodity these days and so good on them.

    All in all the workers did a marvellous job in setting things right. In my early teens, I worked with my father putting up scaffolding on tower blocks and in horrible condition and I learnt very quickly that, that type of work wasn't for me, and I went back to college. I did enjoy this series of videos and I want to thank you for filming in such ghastly conditions. The drone shots were awesome. All the best Alan. Bye for now. Stephen🦼

    I have really enjoyed this series, Alan. I am at the point in my life where I can say: "Work fascinates me. I can sit and stare at it for hours." It brings back memories of doing repairs on the marina where I kept my last sailboat.
    Also, your piece on your bow cam had a very interesting revelation, you use a Sony AX53! I sold my last professional, interchangeable-lens camera, and two very nice lenses (for less than 10% of what I originally paid), to buy an AX53. It is a great camera with only one real shortcoming: no NDF filters. I have used my AX53 more in the last three months than I used the system it replaced in the last two years.
    Best wishes, Zach

      The supporting poles for the 'A' frames are just pushed into the canal bed and pull out quite easily. Your suggestion would require additional set up work and the dams were out of reach of the long arm digger, a single opening in the hedgerow having been made adjacent to the culvert. Cheers

    Sorry I'm late for this post Alan but I've had personal things to deal with this week ......anyhow Alan this has been an interesting series and you must be congratulated on your diligence in following the CRT's progress in at times miserable conditions .....I'd need much more than a Cheese roll to do this .Talking of Cheese I have got a nice stock of cheese in for Christmas some Stilton,Red Leicester,Wensleydale some Danish Blue and some Brie plus or local old Cheddar which is superb ,also got some Haywards pickled onions an extra jar of Branston which is a staple for us.We are seeing a lot more British cheese on sale and talking the the Deli manager its very popular .So one again thank you so much for all your blogs,your hard work and your diligence.

    Evening Alan, Well, who'd had thought the repair to a leaking culvert could be so fascinating?? Have to congratulate yourself for a truly informative series, production values were excellent, and the editing truly professional, 3 questions if I may: 1. During the excavation of the clay, I assume it left quite a pungent aroma? 2. Did you see any of the fish that were removed? 3. What make of Drone have you invested in? Certainly whetted the appetite for the ne t series for sure...as usual, take care, I wish you & yours a wonderful Christmastime, and I wish you a happy & healthy 2022. Cheers.

The drone is a DJI Mini 2. Thanks for your good wishes for Christmas. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All the best for 2022.

  • @michaelhiggins7365
    @michaelhiggins7365 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This proved to be quite an undertaking, requiring a vast amount of engineering and planning. I very much enjoyed this series Alan, you are to be congratulated on such a fine job. I do have one question: Were the stop planks installed at the marina entrance as a precautionary measure, should the coffer dams fail ? I'm guessing this is why it was done. Thanks so much for this one Alan and take very good care.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was uncertainty as to what length of canal would be closed and drained, also if something went wrong and the canal drained, the boats would be on the mud. Failure of the dams wouldn't have had any effect, so yes it was precautionary. All the best.

  • @ronkordish7887
    @ronkordish7887 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was great! And done in a timely order I have a better understanding how the canals are built I thought they would be deeper than that. What is the average depth I think I remember past vlogs from other boaters and yours to of hitting obstacles and grounding is this a common occurrence that happens often or is it more like hit and miss and is there anyone running a gasoline engine ? There seems to be a lot of engine issues. Diesel engines are known for their almost indestructibility,at least around here. Just curious

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron. The canals tend to have a saucer shaped cross section. I would say depth in the centre is about 4 to 5ft (up to 1.5m). It is usual to cruise down the centre and move over when passing other boats. It's difficult to generalise over 2000 miles of canal. Boat drafts will vary and where water levels are low, the bottom of some boats could drag over the canal bed. In built up areas, things may get thrown in canals, such as shopping trolleys, old tyres, chairs etc. I can't really comment on engines, the vast majority will be diesel. Hope that helps a little.
