    Hi Richard, I loved this video and in particular the drone shots at the beginning. When I read the title my first thoughts were thermos flask, rum balls and bicycle clips ( to stop spiders and snakes ). Well, I wasn't far from being correct. I found the video very informative, although most of the content was known to me ( it's nice to see we are on the same wavelength ). The photopills app is much more informative than you make it out to be. I love it because nearly everything one needs is in it, particularly moon phases, fields of view, hyperfocaldistances and lots more. If you are at at loose moment , it would be great to see a "behind the scenes" video of how you video yourself ( I know this would be very difficult ). The final shots were as ever terrific.

    Awesome inspiring videos Richard and your photos are stunning......works of art and in my opinion, the best that I have come across on TH-cam.
    Have you ever had the opportunity to test/use the Kase Starglow filter for your night sky photography. and if so, what are your thoughts on it ?.
    Apparently the filter is designed to enlarge bright stars and make them glow brighter whilst also highlight and bring out their natural colour making constellations pop and stand out

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your kind words Mike, I really appreciate it. No I haven't used the Kase filter. It does pretty much the same thing that a thin layer of cloud does . .bloat the brighter stars and make them glow. One issue with such filters is that they can have the effect of softening the foreground detail. A lot of people will manually hold them across the top half of the image so they only affect the sky . .obviously this method is hit and miss.

    Yet another useful video Richard, thankyou. Quick question re your light painting torch. I notice it looks to have some sort of CTO gel on it. When you are doing your fine art lightpainting technique do you use the straight torchlight or is it gelled? Asking as I often end up with very blue (cool) tones and like the warmer tones you seem to achieve. I guess a supplementary, related question is do you change your white balance when shooting the light painted foreground images or leave it the same setting as your sky images (eg 4000 K). Many thanks for the continued high quality content 👍)

      Thanks so much for watching again Suzanne. Your comments are always very encouraging. You are a great support to me and I certainly do appreciate it. 😍 beautiful, just beautiful. That noise free sky on the first image 27:20, is the sky stacked separately and blended in later by Ps or is it a single image? Just asking, because there are so many details and stars shining through the branches and precise masking in software like Stary Landscape Stacker (or the Windows equivalent I always forget the name) would be an enormous workload…

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot for watching Roland. The sky in that first image is actually a single shot. I did apply noise reduction and then I blended about 6 or 7 light painted foreground shots and blended in photoshop. The key is to use my fine art light painting method out in the field. In short I don't capture many stars in those light painted shots by stopping down the aperture and lowering the iso, and therefore it's a lot easier to get rid of stars that you don't want by using the Lighten blend mode in photoshop.

    • @rolandrick
      @rolandrick 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightscapeimages.richard Thank you so much. 🙏 I’m also trying this light painting as you do, but lack of experience, my painted foreground is always far to bright and bringing it down by some sliders does not look as good as if you get it correct exposed straight out of camera

    Useful reminders all Richard and some great sequences from your drone. I was out last week doing a spot of nightscape photography, took a tumble on some stone steps and cut my hand. Note to self - take more care and carry a first aid kit! On the personal safety front I'm guessing that you'll have one to hand, but I was wondering about the other hazards that you might come across at night, not least snakes? I know from your previous comments that you've never encountered one but I guess there's always a first time, so would an anti-venom kit be a good idea? Not being dramatic at all - we just care about you! Great pano btw @ 28:05 👍.

      Thanks a lot for your comments Paul. Yes I do carry a first aid kit . .never had to use it but it's there if need be. As you mentioned I've never seen a snake. A lot of that is due to milky way season being mainly in the colder months here in Australia . .no creepy crawlies around at that time of year. Other than that I make a lot of noise and stomp my feet when wandering about in the warmer months.

    Thanks. I’ve always wondered about the red light. I would really love to finally upgrade my camera from the old d3100, I just don’t know wether to go mirrorless but I do want to move away from the crop sensor. I love Astro and star trails, this flip screen is a must. Love watching your videos they’re great 👍🏻. I had a leg fall out of my tripod just not long after I bought a new one. Wish I have packed the old tripod as well. Hence the reason for upgrading the camera, the new tripod doesn’t have a leveller but the 850 camera does.

      Thanks heaps for watching Danielle. If you're looking to replace your camera with astro and star trails in mind then I'd strongly suggest full frame. Either the Nikon Z6, Canon R6 or Sony A74 (Due to be released this month.) You'll also need lenses to suit these cameras but they are all excellent low light and high iso performers. All of the new cameras also have built in spirit levels.
